ow11:

1. International Mobile

2. 'Suppressing' salary is meant to reduce operating cost and hence higher profit margins when revenue increases. The manager would be rewarded with a bigger bonus or a promotion if he has consistently posted larger profits. However, bereal16 is unaware that this practice is done in many companies all over the world and that they actually don't suppress the salary but the so-called IM staff are paid the extras as 'inconveniences'

3. I'm not sure about this perhaps he means that they shouldnt chase after their bonuses or something else. I'm guessing here.

He must've worked there for 5 years but he isn't sure how and why there is a pay disparity amongst staff in the same company and is holding only one reason valid. which I think is not the most important reason why his IM friend earned 70% more than him.

Yeah, I know (2 & 3). I was just trying to expose him and make him self-aware.

He comes across as poorly spoken, poorly trained and typical victim of Nigerian education system.

I asked him simple questions and he could not give me a sound, intelligent and well rounded explanation after 2 attempts, like the one you gave me in your first attempt. And he wonders why he is paid less than people that probably can.

He could not explain sensibly the commercial logic behind management pay policy. He could not identify the global existence of such practices. He just threw the typical conjectures of a half-baked graduate. The rampant, unsubstantiated accusations against someone else or a group to excuse for his own inability and incompetence. Graduates like him that leave you wondering how Nigerian universities assess students and whether critical thinking was tested before awarding certificates.

Does he think business are there to throw money away? They are in business to pay you what you are not worth? I can tell from reading his responses that he is a typical average Nigerian employee. That is SHYT POOR. He is not part of the few Nigerian graduates that are exceptional irrespective of the environment, and there is commercial logic to not pay staff liek him IM pay. I can't imagine him adding that much strategic value to a business from this short interaction and test. I can't imagine him giving me any quality if I instructed him to do an analysis and write a summarisation report. He will probably give me the standard I see from the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics' authors (shyt poor!!!) and I will have to bin the report and do it myself.

People like you are worth IM pay, he is lucky he is getting 70% of that pay. In my world he would get 40%.

FYI i didn't study in naija and i was an IM for about 2yrs b4 been transferred back to naija. I left SLB as a manager, the other things that were involved i don't need to tell you, You have spoken your age and experience, and this i understand,
Everything depends on your dreams and which career path you intend to take, I only talked about money because the discussion topic demanded for that,

Hello!

How about consultancy firms? Does anyone know how much Phillips consulting or Accenture pays someone with an MBA, and any benefits? I hear they are good companies.
Thanks

In my opinion all O & G exploration/producing companies have a weighted salary/compensation scale with very marginal slides. So be very happy with any opportunity within their perimeter. For people who find it inconceivable that a freshman in these companies would make 500,000naira/month should google up the same position within the same company in other foreign countries eg. USA.I work for an oil company in united states as an operator and make more than $130,000/year + overtime. With my bonus and other incentives I take home about $150,000/year and I am not an engineer. Understand also that working in an oil company involves a lot of risk and exposure to hazards, so you are well compensated. While it is a great opportunity, it is not a job for every person. Mistakes are intolerable, ethical standards very high; this job will take your time, friends, sometimes family, etc but will put so much money in your pocket. So think about it!

Repubocrat:

Thanks for the reply.

My currency conversion was a little faulty. The guys I was talking about in my previous post were asking for 15million naira. I mistook 15million naira for $90k, but it's actually about a $100k, so you're right.  Nevertheless, that's mad cash for an entry level position.

That is more than what employees with a few years experience earn in Shell. Is that before or after tax by the way?

Mystique: DUDES, Get ur facts right!!! Schlumberger pays real good, u get to travel all around the world, you get an apartment, a house and car, plus the bonuses are awesome,

(Whoever compared them to low paying banks must be mistaken!!)

The only catch is, they demand your blood, and whole life in return, i.e. you have ABSOLUTELY NO time for urself/ur family sad

I understand ur point...nothing goes for nothing
