Medicine too.No discipline is entirely useless but regards to the part of the world we are coming from and coupled with the situation in this our beloved country I don't think there is a lucrative career prospect in that field of study,I wouln't want you to venture into what you would later regret in life after graduation.Even a course like Animal science would do you good than Vet. Med when the job doesn't come calling and you eventually find yourself in "the League of Unemployed Graduates" of this great nation because you can easily engage in poultry farming, but the choice is stil yours. If Human Medicine is what you want in life then dust your books and start again because time is not your friend.......GOOD LUCK. 3 Likes |

If you knew what veterinary.medicine was then you would rather not have given the advise you gave. And comparing vet med with animal science? Thats gross. Animal scientists are like veterinary nurses in livestock. Meaning a vet can do what they can do and lots more. In other areas where they don't fit in, vets are ultra handy. I would urge you to go through my recent write up.and have your eyes opened. The challenge however may come when you are unlucky and most people will rather not employ you as they are scared of your salary demands. And while a vet would not settle for not so lucrative jobs like secondary or primary school teaching, an animal scientist would have no qualms doing that. As a vet with your needle and syringe and a few drugs, you can run around everyday and your bills will be paid comfortably. 5 Likes |

Vet.Med is Not Bad,Aside the unethical idiosyncrasy nigerians have about the course,And the Rate of employability which am not sure would be swift,Its depends on your passion, determination & patience for Medicine. |

obuksjr:Hmmm dis guy u most either be an illetrate or a novice no effence bro how can you compare a vet doctor with an animal scientists gone are the days were vet doctors are not valued in nigeria I tell u bro in university of nigeria where I school vet lecturers and professional are the highest paid they pay them more than even medicine and sugery professional I respect vet doctors and students a lot bro believe it or not veterinary medicine is much more broader than human medicine they study different human anatomy and psychology while human doctors study just human anatomy I respect those guys a lot they deserve much respect veterinary medicine is a professional course and a very difficult course for that matter they are well paid currently now another thing about vet medicine is that u don't even need anyone to employ you...you can be self employed and establish on ur own and still work under ministry of agriculture and other vast field too numerous to mention there is much to veterinary medicine than the eye can see the diversity and vastness cannot be overemphasised I respect those guys alot 2 Likes |

I don't know about their rate of employment but vet medicine is harder and more demanding than human medicine 5 Likes |

Stancrus:I never wanted to dignify you by responding to the apprentice grammar you have there but my love for treating ignorance won't allow me. Living among puppies can immensely affect one's psyche for logical reasoning, hence your animalistic display of your battered low self esteem because there is no orderliness in animal Kingdom. Superior logic is what wins argument rather than insult. What do you think you know about job opportunities for vet docs that I dont know? For the record, I am a double degree holder from that lion's den(UNN). Can you make such derogatory remarks if you see me in person? With these your semantic flaws, how do you think are representing the lions Mr literate cum professional in your imagination? The young lad was faced with challenge of making choice and I offered my candid advice based on the reality on ground in this part of the world, and you think your foolery submission is a better alternative by blabbing same old lullaby of vet docs been paid higher than their counterparts in human medicine. Can you show me any vet doc/lecturer whose monthly take home is in seven digits. Don't bother, the answer is NO. A medical or a surgical consultant earns that a month aside private practice from a teaching hospital. One ignorance cured. Secondly, what is the percentage of nigerians that keep pet and also patronise vet doc for medical attention if need be? Your guess is good as mine. Vet medicine is a good discipline just like others but we are talking of scale of preference if you studied economics very well. The reason is not far-fetched because the standard of living and our economic malady does not encourage that. Even the animal farmers engage the services of vet docs for a while and boot them once they are familiar with the routine medications but that those not mean few among them is not making it. it is a question of what percentage. This is the few I can administer to you for now because your puppy emperical reasoning and poor parental upringing is too pathological for more dose. 6 Likes |

obuksjr:mr double degree holder I am in great doubt if you really even graduated from school talkless to graduate from university of nigeria with double degrees you most be a joker. Firstly lemme make my point very clear veterinary medicine in university of nigeria is a 100% professional course and a noble one for that matter everyone who schools particular in UNN knows that very well I hate aguring with people like you who know little or nothing about veterinary medicine because it's just a waste of time like I said gone are the days were veterinary medicine is being underestimated in nigeria, in UNN being my place of study vet lecturers and professors are the highest paid if you doubt me come down to university of nigeria and confirm it yourself gone are the days were everything is about human medicine or should I say medicine and sugery. Veterinary medicine unlike human medicine is much more vast and has a broder scope than human medicine by far I dnt need to ask for your opinion because from what I see for you I think u knw little or nothing about veterinary medicine infact I doubt if you really a graduate from university of nigeria. Like I said I respect vet doctors a lot much more than human doctors because they go through much more than the eyes can see vet doctors study varieties of animal anatomy in general while medicine and sugery is engaged in only human anatomy so get ur facts right. Although both medicine and sugery and veterinary medicine students spend exactly the same number of years in school go through the same housemanship scheme also through about the same anatomy and psychology but the veterinary medicine scheme is much more broader and vast than that of human medicine in veterinary medicine you have to completely study and cover different animal anatomy to numerous to mention back then our lecturer use to tell us that getting veterinary medicine as a course is not the problem but graduating from veterinary medicine is were the problem lies meaning it takes only a knowledgeable individual to scale through vet school respect is given to who it is due even in my school I see the way those guys are being pressured to the last they are the only faculty in university of nigeria that don't go for break like other regular students do even there counter pals being medicine and sugery and dentistry feel and respect these guys to the fullest it takes only a lion to understand another lion so I won't be suprised if u stll don't get the point it takes a lot to graduate as a vet is not easy I knw what am saying In the aspects of job opportunities I stll stand my grounds that you knw nothing about this profession veterinary.it is people like you who has being brainwashed right from child hood and through secondary school that stll feels medicine and sugery is the only lucrative course in nigeria bro wake up gone are those days veterinary medicine unlike human medicine is very varse providing several areas of specialisation and opportunity everday for one to explore or engage in unlike human medicine you can only work in hospitals or clinics the same doesn't go for veterinary medicine you can choose to work in your own self established hospital, decide to work under ministry of agriculture, can specialise as a professors in universities, work with migration agencies in airports and seaports to control animal coming in and out of the country, work in federal veterinary teaching hospital under government work under ministry of health the varsness is just too numerous to mention the varsness of the course can never be overemphasised I feel petty when I see people like you who has being misled or misled by people also like you who know nothing about this profession talking trash which you are not sure of please stop giving people false opinions on something u know nothing about or not sure of get your facts from the right source and stop beating around the bush stop saying MBBS superior to DVM because currently the oposite is the case gone are those days we are in 21st century cutting edge technology everywhere news ideas, new innovative new jobs opportunities, new developments and inovations we are not in the 1990's bro wake up. 2 Likes |

You applied or they offered you?....if they offered you then you must be lucky but the real issue is this: will you be able to cope with veterinary medicine? Ask your self because it is a very difficult course. I am talking from experience. My friend who was a brilliant student in human medicine but decided to study vet because his father who's a vet is a millionaire...he saidvthat all the vets Drs he knew are all doing great...but he suffered even lost 2 years in vet but thank God he currently is a vet today...therefore if you can cope..I don't need to advise you...vet is not a place for truancy... 1 Like 1 Share |

Mr obuksjr, i think that you just have a natural grudge for vets. Are you a doctor? It's past time people start giving vets the respect they truly deserve. You have spoken with big words abi? You are now on top of the world. I'll advise you to pack your things now and leave before you get thoroughly embarrassed. ✌✌✌ |

OP was still discussing another admission in 2018, so I guess this thread was just to pass time, or talk about somebody. |

Stancrus:When it comes to the issue of career choice, it becomes something personal. The guy in question knows what he wants but he's only a victim of circumstance. It's obvious he prefers MBBS to vet, and he's utterly uncertain of what vet has to offer, so in this scenario, it's better he tries MBBS again. He could even accept vet's admission while doing this. He may later enjoy veterinary Medicine. We have a lot of unproductive and resentful graduates out there because a handful of them decided to accept the admissions they were offered just like this one's..But rarely would you see anyone who regretted studying a course he applied for.. Life is beyond financial gains. Some people derive their joy in what they're doing and they're satisfied with that. |

The only reason I will advise you to pick up the admission is to broaden your knowledge in basic science (Physics, Chemistry and Biology), then help you in scoring higher marks in the next UTME/POST UTME. Other than the above, I would have advised you ignore the admission and prepare better for next JAMB. With all due respect to previous commenters of the thread, this is not a matter of which course commands more respect or which has a tougher curriculum, but a matter of employment. Here in Nigeria as a medical doctor (MB,BS), you will surely get a job with a good pay, but as a DVM, you will struggle like other graduates to find the job. Not because your are not a professional, but because there are few individuals who patronize the services of a DVM, most farms will rather have a consultant DVM who visits occasionally, or on request, then employ animal scientists as main staff. But for an MBBS or BDS graduate, hospitals can never employ a pharmacist, nurse, BMLS in place of a doctor, infact, all hospitals must have at least one resident medical officer (a doctor). My opinion though. |

Sounds interesting, but is it that reliable? Has anyone already tested it? |

I'm not sure what impact this can have on the overall organization of veterinary clinics. Do you know why I doubt it? It's all because this business is a private business, and animal drugs are used that are proven. You can take a look at more about that at https://www.thegoodypet.com/emergency-vets-usa. I always turn here to find help. This is the place that I trust because I am very concerned about the health of my pets. That is why I chose for them a veterinary clinic with a high reputation and much positive feedback for a long time. I have succeeded. |
