There is this funny stereotype going on that "all africans are Nurses" even bankers in Nigeria are into Nursing abroad, men sef are into Nursing, Almost every african chick you find, ask her what's she majoring in and she say Nursing, what's up with that? What if to make a living in yankee, you had to be a policeman, are you telling me that everyone would go into becoming a cops all in the name of survival for yankee

Well,
Nursing in the US pays relatively well, the minumum educational requirements are not very high, it has a relatively short qualification period and there is a very high demand since the retireing baby-boomers need healthcare. All those are contributory factors. Typically the African "immigrants", do not have much spare time and money, hence the rush into nursing. Does that answer your question?

Hunnie.... i really really wish i had any other answer apart from this one im about to give.

Nursing is MONEY!.

Seriously, most nurses are doing it for the money, and america needs more nurses... There are few americans going into nursing.. they really cant take the heat in the nursing school/department. So yeah.. we africans are the sposed to be 'smart' ones that go into it. Most people say they are doing it because it's their passion, but the truth all ends up in the MONEY aspect.

Anyways.. Yeah.. im doing nusring too, and all the girls i know in my school (abt 35 girls and more)... are also doing nursing. Those that aren't doing nursing are pharmacists or doctors.

What can i say?? Im doing nursing because.. i really dunno. I like nursing.. i love people.. i feel happy when i help people and hunny... I LOVE MONEY!

There is no doubt that nursing is the bomb, however I aint gona do something I know am not gifted to do for the sake of being confortable or "what the society wants" attitude. I am an engineer and loving it, also started a company last year and doing very well. I have also scheduled to release my first book in the first quarter of next year.

I think Nursing is a profitable career these days, thousands of men and women are going into this profession every day, one question though ? has any one stop to wonder what would happend to this money making ventore in the next four to five years. I'm pretty sure all the Economics majors know where I'm coming from (Demand and Supply). If you think I don't know what I'm talking about, ask all the people that went in to computer programing in the early 90's when we had the dot com boom.

Well, d money is definitely one of my reasons, then again..i couldn't get into medical skool cos of d darn Calculus..i hate maths of any sort n plus in Canada, u have to have at least a 4yr first degree. so when maths failed me, Nursing was my second choice, then again, it's something i've alwayz wanted to do... plus it gives me d opportunity to go into medical skool afer i finish if i still want to!

Ok, nursing is one of the qucikest ways to make money here. Quickest is not always the best but Africans dont care. They have already converted the amount they are going to make to naira and it is more than they ever dreamed they could be making! My parents or i should say my dad almost forced me to read nursing so i can start making 60,000 dollars a year straight out of college. I refused knowing i can quadriple that amount by becoming a doctor. Long story short, its all about the benjamins!

Good day All, I just saw the topic above, and it’s quite interesting. I sent out personal messages to some folks that indicated they are either ststudying nursing or medicine .

I just want to leave this message here ,if there is any one not studying nursing or medicine but can give us useful info

Please I will need assistance to find or helping me to carry out a search for good schools that are relatively not expensive in terms of cost (tuition, housing, insurances etc), where my friend(female) can undergo nursing program.
She graduated from the University of Port Harcourt Nig, with a Bsc in Anatomy, and now wishes to Study Nursing in the US or Canada.
I will be most grateful if there is any information any one can give in this regards,
Thanks and God bless.

Not only in America, same thing in UK, i think this is beacuse Nursing a general course, as in Job, u can do it anywhere unlike other Job. If you study Nusring in Africa, or Nigeria anywhere you will surely get job as a Nurse anywhere you go. Also like others say, Nusring is Money, but not only Nusring though.

Disney,
Not All Africans are studying nursing in America.  I majored in Communications and now work from home as a Freelance Writer.  At any rate, Hot angel is right.  The motivating factor for many African residents in America, (at least the ones I know) who venture into the field of nursing is unfortunately "mucho dinero" (big money in Spanish).  To anyone who's still trying to pave a career path, I say first figure out what you want to do with your life, and then go for it!  Remember, if it isn't a labor of love, sooner of later, you're bound to become a burn out! wink. Marsha Sinetar once said,"Do what you love, the money will follow" grin

For you to enjoy the "more"... you must have Money.
Re: Why Are All Africans Studying Nursing In America? by uniben82(f): 9:12pm On Feb 10, 2006
It certainly does make things easier in life. One can significantly increase his or her comfort level as needed. However, money can't buy you love. At least not the type that'll stick with you through thick and thin or till your golden locks turn silver.

Re: Why Are All Africans Studying Nursing In America? by tochi(f): 1:50am On Feb 11, 2006
Ok wills,
there are numerous nursing schools in the United Sates. Almost every four year university has a nursing program. You are suposed to fufill your undergraduate requiremets (usually 2yrs) then go to nursing school for another two years then thats it! However, since your friend already has a BSC in anatomy, she has to contact whichever school she decides to apply to and they are usually good with tellling you which credits they will accept and which ones they will not accept. If she has completed all the prerequisites and they are accepted, ONLY THEN can she be eligible to apply to nursing school! Then again, it differs from school to school.
About medical schools that you asked me about, there are no CHEAP medical school honesly. They barely give scholarships to US citizens for med school not to talk about international students. If you do insist on applying for a scholarship, you have to have scored like one million on the entrance exam . The cost anyways is $30,000-40,000 a year for med school.
In my opinion, these are some good scchools :
Howard University ( nursing + medicne and this school is FULL of Nigerians and they are good with the visa stuff).
University of Miami (nursing + medschool..........kind of expensive though)
Mercer University (my friend goes there and i heaerd its alrite)
University of wisconsinp- madison( my school but its pretty pricy but they have GREAT programs)
Morgan State University (its a black school and my cousin is in their nursing program)
University of Maryland-Colllege Park

Anyways, i am not a specialist but i have tried my best.
