[quote author=Marc9 post=26857588] If I cld remember vividly, u were one of those kiddos that refuted what I said abt Catchment/ELDS bn used in all federal universities!

Well, I'm glad u brought dis up! Like I said from the outset, UI is a federal university and must follow the stipulations laid down by federal govt! UI has all states as its catchment, and so, they chose just 1 candidates from each state(making it 36 candidates with scores closest to their cut-off). U mite be wondering, if three or more candidates frm a particular state scored 79 for mbbs, hw wld they decide who to choose. Well it's simple, they'l consider their jamb score and check who scored highest.
Mbbs cut-off was 80 for merit list. I'm 5000% sure dat not all d candidates on dat merit list scored 80! Some scored 79!

Nw back to ur friend who scored 65 and made the list while those who scored 66, 67, and 68 didn't. UI can't be dat stup*d u knw! Why wld UI pick 65 over 66, 67, 68 jst like dat?! That was Catchment/ELDS in effect!

I'l say dis again like I said b4, those with 79 in p.utme, and with a good utme score shld hold their ground or shld have held their ground! It's a risk worth taking for MBBS! The worst is dat UI wld place every candidate who scored 1 or 2 marks below their cut-off into vacant courses automatically! Dat I'm also 5000% sure of!! smiley

Dat's becos there was anoda candidate from Osun state who scored 69 in post jamb, and scored higher in Jamb/utme dan ur former friend did. So ur former friend missed out on d catchment seletion, but was surely offered anoda course(automatically I guess). For ur latter friend, wat do u expect?! Some1 frm Oyo must hv scored 69 or 68 or 67(with jamb/utme score greater dan 214). He was even lucky they gave him chemistry, nt 'babalawo and wizardry'.

For dis forthcoming 2nd batch, d number of admitted candidates for mbbs is 100, and there's room for 20 or more, say like 50 more spaces, they wld set anoda cut-off for d 2nd batch(tho they wldnt disclose d cut-off). Dat was y I said any candidate with 79 post-utme and a utme score of 240above shld stand his ground and hope he turns out to be among the 20 to 50 candidates dat wld be chosen for 2nd batch! Bt for those who lost their ground cos they desperately wanted to just gain admission and leave home, and did C.O.C, UI wld discreetly offer dem deir C.O.C, in order to decongest candidates awaiting 2nd batch for mbbs. At d end, d determined candidates, say like 80 of dem, wld still stand chances of bn chosen for the 20 to 50 spaces left. The determined candidates dat wldnt make d 2nd batch for mbbs, UI wld be obliged to offer dem vacant courses, like chemistry, jst like they did to 'frankie da tony's latter friend who scored 67'. They have nothing to lose, so long their p.utme scores are very close to the initial cut-off. smiley

I'l help u understand the part u don't get.
In admission, particularly fed universities like Unilag, OAU, and UI, their first list or 1st batch is dubbed 'merit list'. It doesn't necessarily apply only to candidates who scored exactly or above the normal cut-off per se, it also applies to candidates who beat their catchment cut-off, tho undisclosed!

In other words, candidates who met their respective normal cut-off, as well as candidates who met their catchment cut-off are listed under the merit list!

Well, u cld be right though. I might not fully understand UI's pattern, if they assign 1st list/merit only for those who meet the normal cut-off and assign 2nd list or 2nd batch for catchment/ELDS, in company of C.O.C. smiley

it doesn't affect it if d number of candidates awaiting the 2nd batch is less than the remaining quota(spaces left) for dat particular course. For example, if the number of Political science candidates waiting for 2nd batch was 50, and 20 of them already filled C.O.C, and d remaining quota for pol sci was 40. It means the course still requires 40 more pol science candidates. So, UI wld pick 40 out of d 50 candidates(d ones dat didn't opt for C.O.C and d ones dat opted for C.O.C) according to their scores. A candidate who scored closest to pol sci(61) and did C.O.C in geography, will be admitted for pol sci over anoda candidates who didn't do C.O.C bt scored lesser(59).

But if the number of candidates awaiting d 2nd batch surpasses d quota left, UI wld discreetly give C.O.C candidates wat they opted for, in order to decongest the 'awaiters', since d quota is limited. Hope u get it nw? smiley

HMMN!
BUT U SEE UI ACTUALLY WOULD CONSIDER THOSE WHO DID C.O.C 4 THEIR MAIN COURSE:
WHY DO U THINK THEY TOLD THOSE THAT MADE MERIT LIST TO PAY THEIR ACCEPTANCE WHEN THEY DID?WHY NOT AT THE SAME TIME FOR ALL CANDIDATES TO PAY?
They wanna find out and sort those who made merit list but would not resume with them;wic perhaps they have been experiencing(low turn up of admitted candidates in their departments)before!
There could be candidates that have gotten admission for d same course in another university(possibly in higher level(s) say 200level)in schools such as OAU but wanna switch due to strike but change their minds when their schools resume(preferred their school to UI on a normal day!but 4 d strike they were tempted to leave!)
Meanwhile some could be in STATE UNIS ALREADY but due to high cost wanna switch to UI!But die minute(after making d cutoff) for same course,change their minds.IMAGINE person wey ought resume into 300level accepting another admission for resumption into 100level in UI!
Some others could be drop(they drop themselves by not accepting the admission due to incomplete O'LEVEL RESULTS or wrong subject combo)with the fear of forfeiting their admission during screenin or clearance.Hence they tend not to pay waste money on acceptance.
THERE IS A STUDENT OF MINE THAT SCORED 64 IN D P.UTME PUTTING IN 4 ECONOMICS MADE THE MERIT LIST WITH ABOUT 5 DISTINCTIONS BUT D7 IN ENGLISH;
WHEN WE MADE ENQUIRY SHE WAS TOLD SHE WOULD BE DROP DURING CLEARANCE.ADVISED NOT TO PAY ACCEPTANCE;
NOW THOSE WHO DID NOT DO C.O.C WUD BE CONSIDERED NOT INTERESTED IN THEIR ADMISSION!
MEANWHILE THE SPACES AVAILABLE EVEN WITH THOSE WHO MADE THE MERIT LIST BUT DO NOT PAY ACCEPTANCE WUD SURELY BE FILLED WITH CLOSE - MARK CANDIDATES WHO DID C.O.C!Cause these wud be thought to be interested in gaining admission o!
BTW,SOME FIT WRITE THE EXAM 4 WRITING SAKE(With I can still do it in mind(perhaps students of the same school for the same course!)

You may know UI but when it comes to MBBS & LAW don't meddle into em.

Besides, UI should allow us to see candidates scores so that we can know for sure that all the candidates on merit truly deserve em.

Thanks for that vindication! When I was saying this then, some youngsters were refuting it, disrespecting me, even insulted me.

Well, like I said earlier, merit list is a dubbed name for 1st list or 1st batch, cos the candidates on the list were candidates who beat the normal cut-off(merit) and also the catchment/ELDS cut-off.

Again, UI is a federal university and must surely abide by stipulation laid by fed govt to admit certain candidates based on ELDS, and also admit one candidate per state for all 36states(dats if all state-candidates applied for mbbs). Here's d maths....

Stipulated percentage for all federal universities is 40%merit, 40%catchment, and 20% ELDS. Nw for UI dat has all the states as catchment, their percentage for catchment is one candidate from each state. Thus, MBBS might record no northern applicants who eida didn't choose UI, or didn't make 200above in jamb, or didnt score 50% above in p.utme. So dat means we're left with 17 states. By virtue of locality, more of yoruba candidates wld apply in UI(since d sch is in south-west) than other tribes. That explains why a candidate from Oyo state with 79 wldnt make d catchment, while someone from ekiti or kogi or ebonyi with 78 wld make d list, and it's simple.... There are too many Oyo candidates for MBBS. Likewise Ogun, Lagos, and probably Ondo.

So, the 100 candidates dat was chosen was based on merit+catchment(in which less dan 17 candidates were chosen from each state that scored highest, since I assumed northern applicants are missing out), den some hand-full for ELDS. smiley

Swthrt, this week? Pls don't bank on it! I sent someone to go inquire in admission office about the acceptance fee, and update on the 2nd batch, he told me dat one of d officers he met there said their website is faulty, they've not been able to rectify it yet, but they are leaving no stone unturned.
