For those of you that intend to stay back, please start applying for jobs now. The earlier the better. By december/January, most big companies that sponsor candidates would have filled their graduate intake positions for Septemeber start next year. I was lucky I got this advise from a recruitment fair early enough. You may want to check these sites as the graduate programs have openned for most companies: targetjobs.co.uk/ and gradcracker.com - for science and engineering courses. it may be worthwhile to have your CV reviewed (free) through your career services and rewritten if necessary by professional writers. You can search online for "CV writing services" or "professional cv writers" or use this link ( I used this recently and was the cheapest I could find): http://secure.cvcentre.co.uk/ref/81460 there are others like www.bradleycvs.co.uk/ - Your major problem, as you will findout, is filling the forms and writing good cover letters. I will advice you utilise your schools' "career services" as they will review your CV, and cover letters and also organise workshops on how to apply for jobs. Also, don't be discouraged because you are going to get many rejections but just keep applying and you may be lucky. (I personally applied to many companies before getting an offer). I will alos advice that you know what you want - this will help you narrow down the companies to apply to and will also keep you focused. Wish you all the best. 3 Likes |

@ GeneralShepherd, Its good to know that you'll also be studying at Cranfield this year. I hope to resume next week, DFavouredone also. Since you attended both the orientation & induction ceremony, do you "think" those who missed it would be at a crucial disadvantage? Also, I heard there's a provision for housing new foreign students in Mitchell hall until they can find their own accommodation. Is this true? Thanks for your anticipated response. |

Dfavouredone: 1.I just threw my stuff in a box and made sure it was under 23kg according to air maroc limits ,but please don't bring dairy products, meat or honey. You may not be searched but please be mindful that it is illegal (avoid anything illegal even if it is downloading torrents) 2. Yes you can stay in Mitchell till you sort yourself out,but my brother since you are on scholarship it is imperative you find accommodation on campus. Cranfield is in the middle of nowhere( Milton Keynes is at least 30 minutes by Bus),. From what I learnt about the school things are going to get pretty rigorous soon. From Now to Feb ,there will be marathon lectures with a week in between modules and exams will be in Nov and then December. Just try and stay on campus. 3. Today we basically had inductions ,about career services,IT,fire, etc and most importantly on plagiarism. I will be more than willing to help you when you come on campus with any questions you may have or any difficulties you may face. 4. The class is 80% Nigerian, almost made me regret coming. But I will not falter nor be faint hearted ,though I have this fear on return on investment as I am self-sponsored. Please when you come here remembered , you are here to work hard. 5. I am drawing up my timetable and a quality management system to track my progress in this masters. 2 Likes |

GeneralShepherd: The section in bold caught my attention and i completely see where you are coming from. Having a lot of Nigerians in one uni may be a good thing but having them in the same class is a tough one to coup with. Avoid all-Nigerian project group, its a bad idea. 3 Likes |

Forgive me this trivial question I would like to ask: Should I carry one big box to contain all my stuff or is it better to take 2 medium-sized boxes? Probably flying with KLM. |

justwise: Tell me about it. The first accommodation i got were occupied by 3 Nigerians and a polish couple. Bills are contributed (not even shared) as the place runs on a meter. The day i went there, the polish woman complained a lot to the point she started crying. The landlady, also a Nigerian, said she wouldn't do anything about the situation, that the occupants will need to settle any issue between themselves. I just had to find my way and kept searching. Who wants to join himself in such wahala 1 Like |

GeneralShepherd: Thanks man. 80% of Nigerians in one class, i dont think that will be fun at all. Good to know i can stay at Mitchell hostel still sort out my accommodation issue. But then do i need to inform the school of my plan to stay in the hostel for some days still i sort out my accommodation or just show up? Again concerning the cranfield car pick up for international student, how much time notice do i need to give them before my arrival? Thank for the offer to assist me on arrival, i gladly accept. I know u re quite busy settling down and finding your bearing; but when u re less busy kindly respond the queries above. |

Dfavouredone: Everything with the school and almost everything in the UK requires you give them notice before you come over,so call Cranfield university asked to speak with Rebecca Smyth. she will address all queries or direct you to the person that can answer you querries correctly. You need to log on to eve and you will see airport meeting service. Once you book your flight fill in the appropriate information. About the Nigerians most are on scholarship like you and the few I met had this air of being the brilliant guys #lol#. Maybe I'm hating, but the message is remember say na only you waka come in the end. |

justwise: exactly my point. I am working hard to organize myself and come up with a proper time management plan. I already met one guy from the previous year that was telling me that Cranfield is horrible place with wicked lecturers, that the teaching is a scam and all. He even asked if he can put up with me against university rules,he said people do it all the time wiithout problems. And that alumni from previous years don't have jobs. I am already booking appointments with the career services,to improve my online application skills,interviews,e.t.c I am trying so hard to manage my time, this is very difficult for me. Also need to imporve my writing skills and practise on putting references in my own words. I am so used to copying and pasting. justwise, I will glad if you can help with any of the above stated issues. It is a whole new world for me,I must confess. |

Re: Nigerian Students In The Uk How Do You Survive? by justwise(m): 3:52pm On Oct 07, 2014 |
GeneralShepherd: Let me start by saying.....don't let anybody cloud your mind with negative aspect of the uni and the lecturers, yes there are a lot of horrible stories but you have to put on a positive mindset and carry on with your project. Plagiarism is a big issue but you can over come it easily.....incite and reference your work. There are many software that will help you organize your references ...EndNote is one of them, your uni will have it, download it and use the guideline to learn how to use it. Use Google Scholar for your journal articles, many articles published there are from well-known journal article websites. You can use harvard referencing method or other types, inciting within the body of your work is another thing, some people use numbering system...IEEE is a good source and you can also use this website for a quick read http://pitt.libguides.com/c.php?g=12108&p=64736 With the winter approaching many students struggle with time because not everybody wants to get out there in cold but you have to do it. Set your alarm clock. Get good winter jacket, hat, glove and thermal wear. Aboniki balm is another miracle worker.... 5 Likes |

GeneralShepherd: Ebay is the ultimate if you have an account and PayPal account as well you will get cheap and cheerful material there or try Next, Topman, Bank, River Island, those high street shops have good winter jackets on sales sometimes. |

peteafrik88:ENgineering companies I know that sponsor: 1. BP 2. Woodgroup 3. Foster Wheeler 4. Petrofac 5. BT 6. Rolls-Royce 7. Jaguar Land rover 8. Arup 9. Atkins And many more Other companies are: 1. Accenture 2. EY 3. KPMG 4. Pwc 5.Deloitte 6. and many more. Even if it is stated that they require UK/EU citizens, there is no harm in applying as I have heard of a few people who have done that and were sponsored. 4 Likes 1 Share |

dustydee: I second this post. Good list above and as poster said it's very important to start applying now as most companies who sponsor for work visa start their graduate recruitment from about now most close before end of year and offers out by feb. For those going for undergrad degrees, I cannot stress enough the importance of an internship. I thank God I had this information and was able to secure an internship with an investment bank. As they say the rest is history as I got a grad role with another bank after my second year so my final year was spent relaxing in the knowledge I had a job and work permit sorted. After the graduate programmes, I moved across to consulting where I currently work. I will also advice people who are interested I'm business and finance roles to look at seo London. They help people from ethnic minorities to get roles in the city. I was able to get a second internship via seo so they are very good. For those interested in areas like audit or consulting. The big 4 is a good area to look at because they recruit a lot of grads so easily sponsor for work permit. Depending on the school you are attending, you may find it a bit easier applying to regional offices e.g. reading etc as competition for London is high and you are competing with the lse's, imperial etc. Anyway good luck all and always happy to help with any queries. 2 Likes |
