I like the second question. Simple algebra! Questions like this are answered from the options given. Option C is the only integer- making it the only possible answer. |

na so una questions b Chevronmake una dey expect me soon.dose questions were very interesting, easy n hard at d same time! 1.selling price is 6*5=$30.we have 20% as d assumed % profit.cp=? we apply %gain=(sp-cp)/cp*100 20=(30-cp)/cp*100 cp=30/1.2 =25. 30-25=5 5/25 *100 =20% 2.d ratio will b simplified 2 a/b and solving further,we get 9/8! OP how far? Ps:dis has bin modified.and i just realised dat dis op has made things complicated by putting questions which have a strong likelihood of errors! which is correct now.'is giving' or 'is given' cos both respectively depict different things! |

20/100-20 * 100 = 25% Mark up is the %age of profit in relation to cost price. Margin is the %age of profit in relation to selling price. The seller is given 6kg at $5 per kg and you're expected to find the markup if he wants to make a 20% profit (being the margin). But why is the OP asking a question whose answer he's clueless about |
Re: Solve These CHEVRON Interview Questions by Obinoscopy(m): 11:34pm On Oct 06, 2014 |
belovedsamex:Without solving I know the answer is 20% (D). But since you want details, here it is: Cost Price of Rice = $5 × 6 = $30 Therefore Cost Price = CP = $30 Let the Selling Price be designated as SP Therefore to make a profit of 20%, we have: (SP - CP)/CP × 100 = 20 (SP - 30)/30 = 0.2 SP - 30 = 6 SP = $36 Therefore Mark-Up = SP- CP = $36 - $30 = $6 Thus % Mark-Up = 6/30 × 100 = 20% (D) 2. If 8a = 9b, and ab = 0. what is the ratio of a/9 to b/9?8a = 9b Divide both sides by 72 8a/72 = 9b/72 a/9 = b/8 .......eqn(1) Thus to find the ratio of a/9 to b/9 = (a/9) ÷ (b/9).......eqn(2) Let's replace a/9 with b/8 (substituting eqn 1 into eqn2) Thus the ratio changes from (a/9) ÷ (b/9) into (b/8.) ÷ (b/9) This gives 9/8 (D) Let's not allow the equation ab = 0 confuse us. This because, it's not possible for only a or b to be equal to zero (as it would contradict the given equation 8a = 9b). Thus BOTH a and b MUST be equal to zero and using it to solve anything would result in 0/0 which could be anything thus is indeterminate. In conclusion, my answers are 1. D 2. D |

Lynix: Well, bro the truth is,,, mathematics is not like any other subject. even though i couldnt solve the question myself we all know a right procedure wen we see one. and watevr contravaines acceptable mathematical principles we can easily detect. that is why you see all these erudite fellows disputing with different answers. i put the question up here so that i cud get a clue of how to do the working from whoever knows how to go about it. if i had idea about it why should i post it then? i don't show myself. what i kno i kno and keep to myself or teach whoever needs it, and what i don't kno i try to learn from odas. dnt be freakd out by the many contradictions. its gud for ppl to express themselves based on what they know. i shudnt begin to fret because some ppl tink dat d question is not well-framed. what about those who feel otherwise. everybody is allowed to express themselves d way they like. if u feel u cant handle it just look and pass. |
Re: Solve These CHEVRON Interview Questions by Kentnickole(m): 12:29am On Oct 07, 2014 |
Valentinooo: Given: 8a = 9b and a/9 to b/9 thus a = 9b/8; so substitute 9b/8 into a/9, you hv [9b/8]/(9) = 9b/8 x 1/9 = b/8... Also, b = 8a/9; so substitute 8a/9 into b/9, You hv [8a/9]/8 = 8a/9 x 1/8 = a/9... Place back in the ratio line, you hv: a/9 to b/8. |

Instead of the dogo turenchi that is not clear even to the op just get the cost price and multiply by 120 or 1.2 Cost price: 6x$5=$30 $30x1.2=$36 (36-30)/30x100/1= 20% markup Each kg sells for $6 Which $1 markup per kg ($1/$5)x100= 20 %. |

Kentnickole:Wrong. Cross-check the bolded. It should give you 8a/81 and not a/9 |
Re: Solve These CHEVRON Interview Questions by Kentnickole(m): 1:16am On Oct 07, 2014 |
Obinoscopy: Ohh... Thats true. Typo please pardon; I didnt check. In my rough work I left a/9 and then substitute b/9 for b/8 following the a = 9b/8 above for convenient solution... |
Re: Solve These CHEVRON Interview Questions by Obinoscopy(m): 1:28am On Oct 07, 2014 |
Kentnickole:The answer is 9/8. Look at it critically. Note that ratio a/9 to b/9 is the same as the ratio a to b (ie a/9 : b/9 = a:b) |

belovedsamex: eckersley says; Why are you finding it difficult to MODIFY your previous assertion that Kentknoki got both answers right, despite my quote above that you shd do so? 2ND. Nxt time u post a question you do not have an answer to, do in a HUMBLE MANNER, rather than pontificating about it. "No. you guys are all wrong," I'm still waiting for the right answer, and Kentknoki got it right. Go and learn from him". You shdn't parade yourself in such a pompous manner next time. Garrit? |

Re: Solve These CHEVRON Interview Questions by Valentinooo: 7:41am On Oct 07, 2014 |

The contention is how I came about a/9 and b/8 instead of a/9 and b/9 Now here is the working: a = 9b/8; substitute in a/9, you hv 9b/8 x1/9 = b/8. b = 8a/9; substitute in b/8, you hv 8a/9 x 1/8 = a/9. Am sorry for any mathematical ambiguity. I just checked my earlier rough work. Thanks guys for understanding. |
