I will tell a story... A doctor visit his engineer friend. The guy just finish assembling a machine part when he turn to the doctor, "We are into the same line of work - we both open, fix the damage, and reassembled." looking at his doctor friend in frustration he blurted "How come you earn more pay than me?!" The doctor looked at his friend and reply, "...Perhaps you should try fixing the problem while the engine is still working hot and smoke!" 18 Likes |

@Tbliss Guy, you dont have to complain. Besides, teaching is part of learning. And teaching is a profesion that bring blessing. You dont know how many lives you will touch by your lessons, they will just be praying for you "God bless that corper" if you teach them well. Dont let money take Gods blessing from you, teach them to know especially subjects like fur. Maths. Advise them also and see what God will do for you. |
Re: The "BIG" Gap Between Engineering And Medical Students! by InyinyaAgbaOku(m): 8:20am On Oct 07, 2014 |
The question is: how much technological or engineering output does a corper engineer produce? nothing. How much health delivery does a corp doctor offer: enormous. So, op, how can you reap where u did not sow? you want to be paid 100k for teaching ss1 students physics and still follow them on holidays, weekend day offs, midterm break etc. There is no holiday for the corp doctor, in fact corp doctors are underpaid! They function as full blown doctors . 10 Likes |

The disparity is displayed everywhere , though the usefulness of the medical field cannot be overemphasized they can't function properly without the help of engineers , take my school for example , the there are two medical hostels with are the best in the school while engineering has none and now even the newly built hostel is still being deliberated on whether it should go to the medical field. |

Teaching is teaching. An engineer corp member doesn't work as an engineer at all, simple. A doctor who is employed to teach biology to ss2 students will be paid lime other corpers. But once he is in the hospital, doing the work of a doctor, he shouldn't be paid 5k as a corp teacher. 4 Likes |

I'm sorry to say but this is a really useless post. It is this kind of comparison that is causing this friction between doctors and other health workers in public hospitals. You only look at the remuneration. Now look at this: 1. When medical students study very hard during UTME and post-UTME aptitude tests in order to gain admission into universities, where were the engineering students? At least, we all know that the cut-off mark for Medicine is always higher than that of Engineering. OP, did you protest that there is a lot of "GAP" in the admission requirements between the two courses of study? No. You didn't. 2. When you go on end-of-semester breaks and the medical students remain in school (with no hopes of breaks), studying and doing their hospital postings, OP, did you protest that medical students are working in school while you're having the time of your life on Holz? Obviously you didn't. 3. When engineering students fail exams, they carry the courses over to the next session, while when medical students fail exams (depending on the degree of failure), they may have to drop a class and repeat the whole session. OP, did you protest that you guys should be permitted to drop classes when you fail exams? No, you didn't. 4. When you graduate after 5 years of study, and the medical students you gained admission with are still groaning under the weight of one professional exam or the other, did you protest that you should be made to spend more years in school? No, you didn't. You graduated with joy and happiness. But now, you're protesting that doctors and health workers are treated more specially than engineers during NYSC years. Isn't that greed and injustice? You want Abraham's blessings to be yours but you don't want Abraham's sufferings and hardwork to be yours. 25 Likes |

How many times have engineers gone on strike to blackmail the federal & state govts. Know that blackmailers are highly paid. |

nobilis: @nobilis no offense please for the fact that u have great affinity for medical profession, you should understand that everyone has right to his/her own opinion. And let me let you know one simple thing, I have graduates from medical dept in my school and in case u don't know that there is nothing like 3rd class,2nd class upper/lower and 1st class in the medical profession which implies that when u meet up with the cut-off CGPA u have passed and be qualified to become a Doctor of Medicine. If you fail to see them as professionals together its your view but I still maintain that its not for comparism but for fair play to both simple 1 Like |

Tbliss12: I'm sorry, my guy, because out of everything you wrote, I only understood the first sentence. Every other thing you wrote either made no sense to me or had no bearing to what I posted earlier (which you quoted). I have not said any profession deserves to be looked down on. But when you decide to compare two professions, do a holistic comparison. Don't compare the "blessings" and ignore the "sufferings" Lastly, you don't graduate from med school in Nigeria with a Doctor of Medicine (first) degree. Educate yourself better. Ciao. 3 Likes 1 Share |

dridowu: There is no gainsaying the fact that we have got it compleatly wrong when it comes to remuneration in Nigeria, but things will sort themselves out! As things are a lot of people are either studying medicine or making sure their children study it, the result will be the fact that we will have far more doctors than we will need and be able to pay and it will cause a chain reaction, at that point government would be forced to correct its errors |

The gap will always be there as long as a doctor works in a hospital and an engineer teaches physics during youth corps.Am sure it's a whole different story if the engineer works in an automobile company for instance. Only lazy engineers whine and mk noise about doctors earnings as you can quadruple a doctors earnings without sleeping your life out in an hospital.Hv you seen docs on forbes?Am sure you ll find tons of enterpren/engineers.Lots of people are just too mentally lazy to carve out a niche for themselves. #proudlyadoctor 8 Likes |

Are doctors respected? Yes, some of them, Most of them claim they same lives but have never been in an ER, all they do is prescribe aspirin when you have fever, Hell, some doctors work till retirement and never do anything more than treat malaria, typhoid and fever, not saying treating it isn't important, but when you're done keep your mouth shut, I respect good, hardworking, reputable doctors, not those feel among ones all over this thread 1 Like |

Although I am working as an Engineer and earning well, I regret studying Engineering. Why would engineering be studied as a part time course in our polytechnics? 3 Likes |

Me thinks its an issue of demand and supply. Demand for doctors in PPA is higher than that of engineers. I am an engineer who served in Borno State. In my PPA, Damboa, there were no resident doctors. People were treated by nurses only. Hence that gap created the increase in allowances for the medical docs. On the other hand, there were no engineering projects that needed engineers...hence we taught physics and maths, and were paid peanuts. 3 Likes |
