We are not yet a scientific industrial society. We are supposed to have more Technicians, few Technologists and fewer engineers. But in our own case, the pyramid is inverted. We used to have Technical Colleges, but they were closed down because Ajaokuta Steel failed. If we have a proper industrial sector, Engineers will find their usefulness within Nigeria with the support of technologists and technicians. 3 Likes |

COREN and NSE are just there for nothin, they are there to extort money from engineers in a bid to give them certificates. I see no reason why a graduate of engineering will start from level 8 step 3 in the state civil service and earn less than 50k net salary (in Delta state) that's an abuse on my personality, when even architect start from level 9. Engineering is a great profession, but sadly its been abused in this country and no one is there to bail us out even our so-called COREN. Anyways I got fed up with the bullshit, so I had to trade places. I got my own construction company now, and I still am a Federal worker. No time for Nonsense. I represent Mechanical Engineering, class of 2006, UNIBEN |

slimmy05: Servicing generator does not even make you a technician. So studying linguistics should not hinder your natural inclination. I know a primary school level kid who services petrol and diesel generators that we cannot manufacture in Nigeria, because we have no Steel. |

a doctor helps one person at a time and is worshiped. an engineer helps millions of people everyday and is being compared with the doctor. without engineering knowledge your house will collapse on ya head while you sleep. Trust me no doctor can bring you back to life. some1 else will engineer your coffin and the mechanism to lower you into the ground. they say prevention is better than cure. do not underestimate the power of an engineer. and do not forget to see your doctor when youve got backache. |

SwagPower:Who's hating who? You sound so childish, i can't be trading words with you. I just tried to educate you because you said engineers should face their field and I'll educate you more There's virtually no field that doesn't need the knowledge and works of engineers. In agriculture, we have agricultural engineers that helps with farm mechanization to improve farm yield. Imagine the banking industry today without E-banking and atm. You can also imagine modern medicine without technology. I can go on and on I'm proud to be an engineer but then, i cannot rate engineering ahead of medicine here in Nigeria. In general, only baby doctors would say they don't need engineers |

World richest people 1. Carlos Slim Helu (Telecoms Engineer) 2. Bill gates(Comp Engineer) 3. Warren buffet( Petroleum Engineer) .... 5. Laskhmi (Mechanical Engineer) checking d list frm 1st - 100th, U wont see any medical profession. Infact Agriculture is among .. Meaning Engineering and Agriculture rule far better dan Medical field. Dont envy their chicken change of 60k sal. With time u will overtake them and they wont see d flash of ur brake light. |

jantavanta: You have a good technical orientation. You just explained what a country that is plans to become industrialized should be. You have just explained the social stratification of Engineering. Technical to Technologist to Engineers and their ratio. |

clemzo101:God bless you! COREN and NSE are the most useless bodies in Nigeria today. I wanted to apply for IT and couldn't find one till I found work with the Navy. If COREN and NSE were doing what they were supposed to do, Engineering students will not find it difficult to gain six months experience not to talk of having research centres all over the country to aid the industrial and technological growth Nigeria is supposed to have experienced along time ago. Useless set of bodies that only send emails to students to pay 100, 000 - 150, 000 just for seminars; it's not like the seminar invloves you dong something tangible with your hands. They're the same bodies that didn't want former minister of power, Barth Nnaji to be a minister of power. Buncha never-do-wells that is not adding anything to the growth of the nation which is why anyone that can wire a house, build one and fix things are called 'Engineers'. What do they do for those that pass their numerous exams? Nothing that I've heard of. Check the site of Nigeria Dept. of energy, useless contents there. All talking about the never ending promises of the govt. to increase electricity generation; nothing on research or sponsorship of students with wonderful designs on power improvements. They do not visit schools to check if lecturers are teaching Engineering students what they are to know knowing fully well that some lecturers do not bother teaching. All they wait for is bribe from various institutions. Go to their websites and check the last time something meaningful was done by both bodies. Oafish and incompetent people at the helms of affairs of both bodies. Poster, I think you should direct your questions to the above useless bodies as they're the only ones capable of creating the front which can bring all Engineers together for a common goal. Another is the kinda society we live in. One thing people here should know is almost all, if not all fields need the services of an Engineer. Then again, every field is dependent on another. lrguru: I'm an undergraduate in the same school studying the same course. Bros, I hail!!! I also noticed we're quick to make references to Oil/gas industries. Is there anything wrong if various Engineers come together to start an automotive firm, an energy firm? If we aspire to have an organisation like NASA, Boeing, Airbus, Kawasaki heavy industries etc, is it bad? Why must it always be oil/gas? Why?? For those running their mouths anyhow about Engineering, I leave you with this link. 2 Likes 1 Share |

brilliant5: I don't know where or how you came about this inference but as much as i know that the medical school is not a joke, Engineering schools throughout the world is known to drive students to the end of their wits, nigeria is worse. If u think engineering students flex in school, go watch 3idiots nd imagine wat the nigerian version may look like but if you think that is just a movie, then u can as well remove the 'brilliant' in your monicker. 1 Like 1 Share |

though it's coming late, but I think you should know how common engineers are in Nigeria, with no impact whatsoever. Even your Mech. Engineering professors in school probably can't replace a spark plug in their generators, yet they churn you out like pop-corn to glorify your chosen profession when you are all a bunch of quacks. I have seen Elect/Elect students that can't replace a switch. Yet you want to recieve 500k in our PPA's. You reap what you sow, they always say. 1 Like |
