Burning Of Over 200 Motocicle By DELTA State Commissioner Of Transport by Richardjemedafe(m): 7:52am On Oct 08, 2014 |
Delta State Commissioner for Transport, Mr. Ben Igbakpa, has come under fire for burning over 200 commercial motorcycles, commonly referred to as Okada riders, in Sapele area on Sunday, an act some have described as ‘wickedness and jungle justice’. Okada-riders A source identified as ‘Karo’ informed SaharaReporters that commissioner Igbakpa ordered the seized commercial motorcycles to be set ablaze following a ban on the use of commercial motorcycles two weeks ago in several areas of the state including Ika South, Ika North and Sapele. The alleged, and controversial, burning of the motorcycles was carried out at the Mosogar end of the Gammon Bridge. A SaharaReporters correspondent who communicated with Commissioner Igbakpa stated that the commissioner noted his displeasure and frustration at the lack of compliance by the banned Okada operators despite having postponed the date of ban several times. Commissioner Igbakpa added that a monitoring exercise, which began on the first of October and which resulted in the seizure of the burnt motorcycles, became necessary in order to appraise the Okada operators of the seriousness of the state’s directive of the ban. Finally, Commissioner Igbakpa encouraged the banned commercial motorcycle operators to adopt the use of commercial tricycles popularly referred to as ‘Keke Napep’ at a reduced rate from the state transport secretariat of Asaba, if they must remain in business. The SaharaReporters correspondent, who also communicated with the Asaba Commissioner of Transport reported that the commissioner denied any knowledge of the burning of the over two hundred motorcycles. “I am not aware of the burning of any Okada, the fact remains that any confiscated Okada is not going back to the owner. How such Okadas are being disposed is not the issue, what matters is that, all Okadas in these areas must be off the road” said the Asaba Commissioner of Transport.

The law said 'do not' yet you did!!laws have to be complied, forget the sentiments. Okada men always think that they can manoeuvre out of any situation, including dodging law-enforcement agencies on the road. Nemesis has caught up with them. Not as if okada has been banned outright but, like in the garden eden, they were told not to ply specific roads yet where they tempted by the greed |

I will suggest that Delta State government have a re-think of this harsh decision. In the whole federation, Delta State has the highest number of private bike. And women especially IKA women are the highest users of bike. IKA women use this bike to convey their wards to schools, and farm produce to markets. The only effort that delta State government is making on road maintainable is the dualisation of old Lagos asaba road that is not up to 3 kilometers and has taken the government 7 good years and it is yet to be completed. If the army in Agbor have their families in Agbor, they will not have taken the directive of the government because it will affect them. My suggestions are 1, women should be allowed to use bike, or every body should be allowed to use bike pending when the roads are fixed to allow taxes into the roads.or the ban should be only old Lagos asaba road. That's my take on this issue. One love. |

nedu2000:How come these laws become effective only when the poor are the ones involved?? How many big shots have been arrested for driving against traffic in this country?? (Besides the Colonel/ Fashola's case) 1 Like |

omenka:I get your point but okada has caused so many accidents/deaths let them ply trunk C routes ,in terms of the rich & big shots getting away with arrests, its a problem, the military & para-military are the ultimate breakers of traffic rules but in our society they are untouchable, unfortunately. |
