In the history of Nigeria, Awolowo has no one to be compared with him in ideology except Buhari. To me, he was the greatest Nigerian who ever lived. You may debate my assertion, but really, what’s there to debate? Verifiable data are there to support my claim. But beyond the data are the everyday realities that attest to the superior accomplishments of Awolowo.

Ask yourself this simple question: “Who was on the stage before Awolowo; and what’s the political stage and space been like since his death?” In another time and place, he’d be philosophised and declared a statesman extraordinaire. He was that good. He was that great a human being.

But amongst the current crop of high-level politicians, ideologically and philosophically, Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd) stands closest to Awolowo. He is a clear disciple of the sage. He himself may not say it; but the characteristics are apparent for sharp minds to see. Thousands of politicians run around the country claiming to be Awoists, but really, the vast majority are counterfeits. I tell you this: If Buhari had not been a military man, he most likely would have been an “Awolowo-man”. And so too would have been Col. Abubakar Dangiwa Umar (retd.).

Buhari has missed out on the Presidency because of
several calculating forces. There are some Nigerians who hold his military background against him. They seem to forget that he came to the rescue at a time when the country needed to be rescued. How soon they forget the mind-numbing extravagances that characterised the Second Republic (1979-1983), as represented by the then National Party of Nigeria.

How soon they forget that the Shehu Shagari regime was mortgaging their posterity. T he demise of
the inglorious second Republic under the leadership of Alhaji Shehu Aliyu Shagari, the First Executive President of Nigeria was brought about the total
breakdown of law and order, and the apparent
insecurity in the country arising from the bitter
political wrangling generated by the 1983 general
elections.

The nation was moving dangerously in murky political waters and could have hit the reefs but the timely intervention came to her rescue.
The abysmal downward plunge of the already battered economy, the unmitigated corruption, greed, avarice, lack of public probity and accountability, hunger and abject poverty, and the aimless drifting of the ship of state General Muhamadu Buhari which characterised the last days of the Second Republic prompted the Armed Forces
to strike in the midnight of December 31, 1983 and installed Major General Muhammadu Buhari (then GOC 3rd Division, Jos) as the new Head of State.

The Buhari administration identified indiscipline as the bane of the nation's ills and therefore decided to fight it in all its ramifications. Hence the pre occupation of the regime was the launching of the different phases of the War Against Indiscipline (WAI)
which has become a household word in may Nigerian homes. There were five phases of WAI, namely :-
a. Queuing (March 20, 1984)
b. Work Ethics (May 1, 1984)
c. Nationalism and Patriotism (August 21,1984)
d. Anti-Corruption and Economic Sabotage (May 14, 1985)
e. Environmental Sanitation (July 29, 1985).

Other highlights of the regime include :-

1. The suspension of the 1979 Constitution in January 1984.

2. The dissolution of political parties and ban on political activities in January 1984.

3. The freezing of accounts of political parties and corrupt ex-political office holders in the Second Republic in 1984.

4. The trimming down of the country's Civil service labour force in 1984.

5. The change of colour of the nation's currency notes (except the fifty kobo note) in April 1984 to stop currency trafficking. The exercise rendered almost half of the estimated N6 billion in circulation worthless at the expiration of the change.

6. The deportation of illegal aliens on the 14th of April, 1984 and 9th of August, 1985 respectively.

7. The clamp down on economic saboteurs with the legal backing of the Miscellaneous Offences Decree No. 20 of 1984.

8. The launching of the Expanded Immunization Programme (EPI) in May, 1984.

9. The initiation of counter trade in Petroleum products in May, 1984.

10. The wrestling of a major concession from OPEC in 1984 to increase Nigeria's oil production quota from 1.3 million barrels to 1.45 million barrels per day.

11. The adoption of stricter austerity measures in 1984 and 1985 to further revamp the economy which include:

12. The trial and conviction of ex-politicians who illegally enriched themselves or their political parties.

The stealing-fleecing elite know that their wrong doings will come to an end the day we have a President Buhari! The fact that Awolowo was going to stop the rot, and perhaps, probe them, was one of the reasons they denied him the Presidency. Today, when they think of Buhari, they think of Awolowo. This scares them.

On the other spectrum are the elite who are afraid of
the long arm of justice; afraid that the key to the
“Central Bank” will be taken away from them; and afraid of the sanity and progress that will follow. This was a man who, in the very short period that he was in power, gave us sunny days and hopeful nights. He enthroned sanity and orderliness and progress and a sense of purpose and accountability.

Buhari, unlike many others, is not a man that will genuflect sheepishly before the imperialists. And Buhari, like Awolowo before him, is not a saint. But this is a decent, pious, able and capable humane human being. He is a credit to our republic!

Those who are against Buhari are just afraid of becoming accountable for the looting and evil they have perpetrated.

Every Nigerian should help elect Buhari and put to halt the massive corrupt system that is only benefiting a few. Jonathan may have good intentions, but he grossly lack the will and courage to say NO to Corruption.

Name the betrayals. And compare that to what Jerry Rawlings did to corruption in Ghana at that period.

But Buhari could do nothing to clear corruption as JJ Rawlings did back then. Why

Obviously because apart from being very corrupt himself the looters were his intimate friends and fellow tribesmen.

It will be very ridiculous to argue blindly with a person like you. Many people like you were never born during the reign of Buhari, so I can expect any meaningful and sensible comments from you. If you were in school in 83 to 89, there was this caption or I should call it slogan or watchword
"APAITHEID IS A CRIME AGAINST HUMANITY"

This words were BOLDLY written at the top of chalkboard in all schools in Nigeria. Then there were discipline and dedication to service. But today, reverse is the case. So I can't blame you when elders are speaking from experience and you indomie/cowbell fed kids spitting trash, condemning GMB. I pity your future

Buhari is more like Aminu Kano not Awolowo, stop denigrating Awolowo's name.

Like Awo before him, he is seen more as a tribalist than a unifier. I hate to say this, but Awolowo's vast educational background coupled with his many innovative ideas makes it a mockery to put him in the same bracket as Buhari.
Buhari can quote the Quran front to back but that hardly makes him a genius, he can always apply to be an Imam.

Anyway Buhari has as much chance of ruling Nigeria as Awo did>zero chance.

Another thread to deodorise the image of the criminal coup plotter who wanted to be a life president until his fellow coupist stopped him in August 1985.

His anti democracy credentials are sterling. Nigerians won't allow you sons of retrogression to take us back to Babylon.

You should rather pity your own confused mind.
Was General Buhari in power till 1989
What has this your apaRtheid got to do with General Buhari's corruption?
And was General Obasanjo not in the forefront of the apartheid struggle during his own regime (13 February 1976 to 1 October 1979 )?

Yes, you are correct that, to a large extent, there WAS discipline and dedication to service for every ORDINARY citizen but not for the lawless Buhari and his favoured people. Examples include =>

- the 53 suitcases for his Aide-de-Camp, Major Jokolo that were allowed in while borders and airports were closed during the currency change.
- FAILED attempt to crate Umaru Dikko from London to Nigeria rather than seek extradition as lawful people do.
- allowing his deputy, Idiagbon's son to go on holy pilgrimage to Mecca when he had made a law against children going on such trips.

These were among the few that came to light in those days when the useless General gagged the press and threw anyone who criticized him into jail.

What a bundle of HYPOCRISY angry

The first question for you is, Did you experience 84-85 regime? Were you a living witness or you just build your theory on media propaganda?

One thing synonymous with Fela was Marijuana. Did you know that? When the then administration enacted laws forbidden public smoking, especially hard drugs and indian hemps, Fela dared the government. In the course of breaching federal law, Fela released an album abusing and criticising Buhari. Fela promoted marijuana, violated laws against moral values. And the worst of it, he was sentenced for trumped-up foreign currency violation charges .

If you were the one, what would you have done?

Augustus Taiwo Solari, of a blessed memory was acclaimed human right activist. But he missed the course when he began to cause violence through his belief. He was a typical atheist. He denounced all religions, criticised and wrote lots of media propaganda against the government. He fought against religion organisations establishing school. This led him to establishing MAYFLOWER SCHOOL. He caused lots of threats to religious organisations. It was the religious organisations that prevailed on the then military government to get his mouth shot in prison.

Tai Solarin was a typical and radical atheist!!!

Even let me add more to it, do you know that Fela used Dollar currency to wrap "IGBO" publicly and smoked it. It was an embarrassing act to the prestige of our dear country. Let me ask you, why are you so bothered about fela imprisonment? Do you also belong to marijuana cacaus?
