For a start you can still be using escrow if you still learning the rope.
If you buying from Alibaba always deal with a gold supplier. It is very difficult for a gold supplier to dupe you because they pay. a lot of money to Alibaba and there conditions that must have met before getting to that gold level.
But I don't know about other Chinese site.
If Gold supplier dupe you, report the case to Alibaba they will take it up for you if you have evidence of payment.

EBay owns PayPal, and almost every transaction on eBay nowadays is through PayPal.

Paypal is also like Escrow - money back guarantee but go through PayPal's buyer protection page. It isn't voluminous, and it's quite easy to understand. I've read it before but cannot remember it's contents as I don't deal with US sites for now
