How To Be An Expert Driver At Night by moscobabs(m): 11:20am On Oct 15, 2014
I got my car 4 months ago and I can drive very well in the day but I find it difficult to drive at night as the full light of the vehicles opposite always enter my eyes. I nearly hit the covet the day I drove at night, I took it out the following day thinking I will get used to night driving but instead I hit one keke napep, also caused damage to my car.

Please how can I be a good driver at night

Help!!

Learn to look through the right side of your windshield when blinded by light from cars coming in opposite direction.
Do not speed.
With time you'll get used to it

I need help here too. I drive based on assumptions at night. That is why I avoid staying out late or better yet, I use the cab.

If our streets were well lighted, it will go a long way helping road users at night.

You're probably short-sighted, drive slowly, stay behind somebody if you're not familiar with the road, if there are street lights, dim your own lights, too many lights will affect your vision. And if you can, avoid night driving.

I dim my lights when there are street lights already, sometimes I don't even use the lights. I wear glasses though, I'm almost blinded by too many lights hitting the glass grin hence the need to dim mine.

Geez! I still can't get myself to drive at night. The last time I did it was almost a nightmare, but God no gree.

I hope I can learn a thing or two from this thread.

My problem also is the light from cars on the opposite lane getting into my eyes. I wear glasses too.

Drive slow. Never more then 60km/h on a single lane road.

On an expressway, you can try driving as far away from the median as possible. That way the lights from oncoming cars disturb you less.

Also you should try to watch the road as far ahead of you as possible so you'll know what to do with your steering when the lights are in your eyes.

You should be able to see any objects on the road, its only the boundaries of the road that become invisible with lights in your eyes. You can use the position of oncoming cars to have an idea of where the road is.

Adjust your head lamps so that they are pointing more at the ground than straight ahead. The road should become clearer.

You are allowed to use your full lamps from time to time.

I hope this helps you. It works for me, tho its better to avoid driving early in the night when the roads are busy.

I used to have similar problem, but now, i do not only drive at night, i also drive perfectly midnight lol. If you do not have any special eye defect this simple tip should help u. When you are driving at night and vehicles with bright headlamps are coming in the opposite direction, never attempt to gaze at their headlamps(as this might cause momentary blindness) but rather focus on your eyes on your lane. If it doesn't work, momentarily switch off yours and use theirs till they pass u by.

some do...my husband used to have same problem...but with his glasses now - he can even look @ the sun without blinking :let alone light from other cars.

For me, I dim my light if there are enof street lights - sometimes I put it off totally.

Sincerely I use a lot of 'igbaju' @9t. These are roads that I have been using for years, so I know where every pothole/obstruction is...lol
-If it's a dualized road better for me.
-if it's a single lane - then you gats be careful, move @moderate speed. I actually use the headlamp of forthcoming cars to know their position.

With time you go dey enjoy am joor. I have always loved driving @9t. embarassed

which car u buy? Come carry me commot and buy me shawarma. grin

My suggestions:
1. Check all your headlamp bulbs are working.
2. Clean your headlamp housing.
3. Possibly replace your stock bulbs if they are dim at full beam.
4. Flash the oncoming vehicle with full beam.
5. NEVER stare into the beam from the headlamps of the vehicle opposite.
I hope these help.

Tip:

Always look at the passenger side of your car, I mean your lane, this pretty helps with less speed. Do not look directly on the road! Else, bright lights from other cars coming in the opposite direction will give you momentarily blindness!

Cheers and Goodluck!

First of all use your eyes to take advantage of any light source that reflects off the highway. You'd really be surprised how much you can see if you look beyond your headlights. Oncoming traffic even at a distance will show you what the road ahead looks like. Don't ever look directly at the headlights of an oncoming vehicle however. Look toward the edge of the road on the right instead, Your eyes have to adjust too many times between reflective light and the darker roadway. .. Use your high beams all the time if no traffic is approaching. Look out to the limit of your headlights...aim high even at night. If seeing at night is a big problem then slow down .... Night driving is actually quite pleasant and I enjoy it. cry cry cry

Make sure your headlamps are bright! That way you will be the one causing others problem or no one would be causing another problem.

Avoid overspeeding. Sometimes I come to almost complete stop till I have vision again. Otherwise, maintain your lane and drive at low speed. Allow others to overtake you and follow them the much you can.

The main thing is to keep your eyes focused on the culvert or side of the road to make sure you are properly positioned always and on just some meters on the road in front of you.
If its on dualised road, its better that you move to the right lane to limit light from oncoming vehicle in the opposite direction.
Its advisable to dim your light and reduce your speed if its on a single carriage way so that the other driver can see well and pass you by.
Re: How To Be An Expert Driver At Night by Nobody: 6:42pm On Oct 15, 2014
I use glasses and when I drive at night I usually get glares from on coming cars whose drivers usually install after market HID lamps as highbeams or constantly use highbeams in Abuja even if you flash them to dip their beams they won't (I don't blame them I blame the defective system for not mandating and enforcing drivers to go for 6months compulsory driving lessons and sit for exams).

Here are tips I'd love you to keep in mind when driving at night.

1. Ensure ALL your headlights, tail-lamps, side markers, turn signal lights and hazards are functional and are operating according to manufacturer's settings.

2. Anticipate your driving and other drivers habits hold your steering and gaze far where your lights fade away and notice the surrounding, from this you can pick your lane not too far into on-coming traffic and not too far to the shoulder of the road this would help you familiarize yourself in that road. But don't drive jack-rabbit style or go on high speed than necessary (if the speed limit is 100km/hr, you can do 80-95km/hr).

3. Don't look into headlighs of on-coming vehicles, and when you have a mad man behind you on full beam, don't gaze into your mirror unnecessarily unless it has auto-dim function enabled.

4. Dip your beam for uncoming drivers, if you notice they are straying into your lane or dangerously close to your lane flash them rapidly look at your right hand side and give way for them while notifying drivers behind you (use of turn signal matters here).

5. When in populated areas (high vehicular and pedestrian population), residential areas, institutional areas or very busy roads, dip your beams. You can use high beams in lonely roads when driving alone on that road with no on-coming vehicles. Especially when doing an interstate journey. But when a vehicle appears, dip your beams.

6. Ensure your headlamps, mirrors and glasses are clean and not smeared with grease, oil dirts and other substances. When dirts are on mirrors and glasses, it reflects lights which in turn causes glare.
