this is not 9ja English. many got that from the fab and chicky series they watch nowadays. listen to Taylor Swift song "we re never getting back together " 2:16min,she used that sentence alot.

I have been wondering why Nigerian students always use the word 'i was like ok' in every of their saying... I found it difficult to believe that 'i was like ok' is a correct short sentence, in English...

because I have sat down and think about this all over and over and over, and through research I found that there is no short sentence in English, like 'i was like ok'.. but some Nigerians are so terrible when it comes to the aspects of speaking or writing standard English...

A student of unilorin came to meet my big bro at home, and he said I have been trying your number since I left Lagos and I WAS LIKE OK LET ME CALL YOUR YOUNGER BROTHER TO CONFIRM..

immediately,I felt the 'spirit of bad English' in what he said above... since then I have been searching,I have been asking
those who are highly educated and those who study English in universities.. if the use of I WAS LIKE OK is good to speak..

to nairelanders do any of you have anything to say about this topic... share your own points of view and let some 'BAD English speaker(s)' learn from you.. thanks

I have sat down and thought about it, not 'think about it'.
It might not be advisable to use such a clause, but it is not particular to Nigerian students. All over the world, a crop of diction is particular to different age grades. Some eventually make their way into the dictionary as slangs or colloquial.

What's there to explain?

"I was like, Ok" Is a grammatically correct sentence or statement or phrase or clause, but not a formal speech as in; you can't address a large crowd or the president or your VC with it because it's informal but grammatically correct! gerrit?
You just contradicted yourself in a bid to defend what is obviously wrong. I would advise you to use english the way it is taught than imagined.

I was like is correct. Anything that comes after that should explain the action you took in the past. But I was like ok as a sentence, is wrong.

Its just a "Vogue thing" in our daily communications in Nigerian but it is highly wrong. and if not corrected, it may be written on examination papers.

What is Nigerian about "I was like ok"?....and why would one even think about this being correct English? "I was like OK" is washed out American slang used especially by young girls who can't express themselves well. It is no different from the washed out slang guys used.."you know what I'm saying"....or currently phrases with the word seriously...I was like seriously?..are you serious? I guess OP lives in a bubble and is unaware of the existance of slangs.

and you started a paragraph with because?
What about yours? You started it with 'and' which is considered wrong by some grammarians.
There is nothing wrong in starting a paragraph with 'because', stop propagating false rules of Grammar.

@poster u also made some grammatical blunders undecided.which is worse than I was like. I was like, okay is an informal statement which is quite appropriate in as much as you don't get so used to it and use it in a formal environment,i.e while addressing a group of learned people or writing an essay.
Your post contains a lot of errors which show you have a poor command of accurate English.
I was like ok is very wrong in any social setting, and it is very grievous that a lot of people use it to express themselves, ranging frm the US to some nigerians.

Op why are you forming efiwe over another man's language? The phrase 'I was like ok' is often used in conjunction with some facial expression by the person that says it. For better understanding, this is what the guy meant I've trying to reach your line but it was unreachable so I was like ( person in deep thought shaking his head what could be wrong with his line) then suddenly he said ok let me call his brother. My one cent.

After 'have verbs' the next verb must be in past participle i.e sat, thought, eaten etc, nobody is perfect or an island of knowledge, imperfection is one of the undying and time-honoured traits of man, don't mind the critics they are always contemptible.
Concerning your observation, I also had thesame thought, bt I didn't give voice to it because I was too occupied.
The word 'Like' has a lot of informal and nonstandard uses, and its uses as an adverb are considered wrong, so, I was like is wrong and shld be avoided.
I was like ok, I was like let me go, when he shouted at me, I was like 'what is he saying'. etc shld all be avoided
The right substitute for it is: my thought were, I said or I thought for example, when he shouted at me, my thoughts were, 'what is he saying?' or [b]'so, I decided to' call your younger brother to confirm in the poster's post.
