Ttalk: sorry for the late response.. 1. we cant conclude that fish business is more viable in the south than north.. The price of feed in the north is a bit high with a corresponding increase in the price of fish.. 2. Both type of pond culture are good, depending on the knowledge of operation. A farmer using a concrete pond will be doing well than another using an earthen pond if the right knowledge is not applied.. we have seen farmers loosing out in both earthen and concrete. All what we need is the right knowledge of the type of pond culture one wants to venture into. 3. The price of fish has increased in the past ten years, sometimes back a kg of fish was 250-300.. Though the price of fish has been static due to the monopoly of the market women. 4.depends on the overall management, if u don't play by the rules you loose out. 5. poultry has its own "wahala" i have met people who have vowed never to go back to poultry business again.. both fish and poultry has its do's and dont's. www.agricnetwork.com 2 Likes |

robonski15:just to add a thing or two to what my bro wrote, poultry is more risky than fish farming, d consultant that gave the analysis above, especially in abuja, most likely isn't doing fish biz. A lot of fishes leave from lagos, ibadan , ogbomoso to abuja because of d ROI, and fish farming can be concluded as a biz with limited stress when all d parameters(knowledge, funds, water, feeding) are right. Every biz has its challenges, even sleeping has its challenges 4 Likes |

excelsiorfarm:I spoke to some fish sellers earlier this week and they told me they buy their fishes from Ibadan. I was wondering why? Is it that the fishes qr cheaper at Ibadan or that the fish farms here cannot meet up with their mkt demand? |
Re: Hidden Truths About Catfish Business!!! by Nobody: 9:02pm On Oct 25, 2014 |
i will also say that fish farming is less stressfull than poultry. U feed them 3 to 4 times a day and change water twice a week, then sort biweekly.Chikena. Not like poultry dt u will be pampering like a new bride to know when it is happy or not, else, they start dieing in mass. Fish also doesnt have odour dt will disturb ur neighbours. With poultry, u try so hard to maintain an odorless farm . My friend had issue with his drainage and for 2 weeks, he did not change the water in his pond and nothing happened to the fishes , just with time, they stopped eating. U cannot try that wit poultry, else u go fear fear. . Anyway, there is no business that is entirely devoid of risks. 1 Like |

mercylicious: True it might be less stressful but sometimes d stress can be over whelming. NB: i dnt knw wat cud av happened to ur frnd's drainage but dnt make it a habit to leave d fishes for two weeks wtout changing water. They will not and cannot do well with such practices. |

Belexy:. The fence and gutter wia he drains d water fell. If he drains d ponds in dt situation, d water will enter ppl's houses. He had to raise money to build the fence and the drainage b4 he could drain. Its not his normal practise bt unforseen circumstance caused it. |

i saw this on friday around upper iweka in Anambra. The two young boys produce local ovens. I was told its used to dry meat. What can dry meat should be able to dry fish. It uses gas as fuel.one is 45k, the other is 55k 1 Like

mercylicious:we have many upscale fish farms in ibadan & his environs(eruwa, ogbomoso), from zartech, durante, many other private enterprises, i know of one with over 38 large(i mean large) ponds & sales of at least 35-45 tonnes weekly, ibadan has great production output & things move from high supply to high needs/market, price varies btw 450 - 550 naira, i can't give u precise answer to d magic/question, d same question was asked from me by a nairalander base in port-harcourt, same challenge -she said they have in rivers state, solution, try to reduce your production cost, possibly u might be able to compete more |

lagbaja: Sorry my dear. network issue here. It seems i mistakenly uploaded the networking rack of our new branch. I took the pic after after signing off for the Lan vendor. I didnt even know the pic was uploaded as i tried many times. I have not stocked my mini pond ooooo. Dont blame me. Am working on an office project that is on an advanced stage. Co-ordinating this has been taking most of my time and wears me off. I will be through by mid of next month. Bt my pond might be ready b4 then. |

excelsiorfarm: Yes i quite agree with you that large amount of catfish consumed in Abuja is being imported from, south, i.e., Lagos, Ibadan, Ogbomosho etc. Does that not explained my fear that catfish business is less profitable in the north? Or do we agree that there are limited fish farmers in and around abuja? As well as limited knowledge to manipulate production to maximise profit? |
