Mine only gets really bad occasionally, the last time being 2 weeks ago. I use ventolin inhaler/tablets and ameliophylin tablets once I have a slight difficulty in breathing, but if it gets bad to the point of chest-tightening, I'm off to the hospital for injections |

safarigirl: What injections? Can't remember the last time I visited a hospital on account of asthma, I do sometimes mention it to collect a free inhaler sha but so far I think the most effective drug is the seritide diskus inhaler. My dad uses it and the few times I tried it, it worked like magic. Still stuck using Ventolin Inhalers anyway, I find it more easy to carry when I need to. |

I used to be asthmatic when I was a little child, precisely age Five. The ailment tormented me for over 7 years. My specialist doctor once told my dad that the only way to overcome my condition was through surgical operation, whereby a tube linking my lungs and nostril will be given a sort of amendment. My dad was devastated with the news, yet he didn't succumb to the doctors demand. Later, my dad in quest for a permanent cure stumbled on some prescriptions from his friends. We were told to stop the use of inhaler and embrace traditional medicine. Indeed, it worked like magic. I was compelled to chew garlic at all times, to the extent that our home refrigerator was turned to a garlic warehouse. With consistent chewing of the garlic and abstinence from pollutants like smoke, fried oil and harsh dust the ailment suddenly subsided. Yet, my parents did'nt rest on the achievement, we continued the medication for the rest subsequent years; in addition during those tough years, my mum was advised to mix ginger with our diet. For instance whenever she cooked our stew, she usually grind some pieces of ginger together with the fresh tomatoes and pepper. Infact, however, my family were fully in support. Even my siblings understood the situation on ground and had to adjust their allergies. I knew how they felt and how they suppressed their allergy to garlic for my sake. I remember during those early period of my ailment, my siblings would moan about how the smell of garlic affected their water and air intake. My younger brother stop drinking our water and had to make do with a neigbour's for a few months. It was funny. Today, I am asthma free and for the past 2 decades of my life, I have never had any new complications. I do things like every natural human. I play football in the rain, I swim, I run marathon, I participate in military trainings like Army recruitment, Gulder Ultimate Search etc, I even fry oil my self. In short, I been living my life to the fullest for the past twenty years now. I give thanks to my late Father for his sacrifices, my mum, my siblings for their support and importantly to God almighty. He deserves the praises. This is my own story. 16 Likes |

tonte: Someone suggested that the environment in Nigeria is a big challenge for asthmatics; it was not until a visit to Europe in winter that we understood. Except for the evening second hand smoke from people on the street and the smell from electric heaters, there does not appear to be many other triggers. In Nigeria, the air is mostly hot, humid and sometimes static, the fumes from generators, okada, cars, lorries is another, dust especially as the rains are beginning to cease, then bush burning and burning of plastics alongside waste. |

wesley80:I think it's ameliophylin injection. It works faster cuz it enters the vein and is transported to the heart faster than the tablet can dissolve. I've only been to the hospital on account of asthma 4 times. Once in 2005 and then in 2009, 2011 and this year. Other than that it's the inhaler I use as well. |

Thanks Kennygee for this topic, mine started in 1996 when I was in JSS3 and prior to that didn't have any history of it, all I know is that I started having difficulty in breathing and all that. I really suffered a lot due to the fact I don't know what was happening to me, taken of wrong medication (can't forget the Trado-Fair in Channel 7 then) and not staying away from what triggered it off. I use Ventolin inhaler and ones a while salbutamor tablets, but the best medication is knowing what always trigger the attack off especially fying of things, dusty environment and cold. |

harryfish:TREVO supplements or other supplements have no proven efficacy against asthma.. Please don't waste your time, money and hope on supplements that will fail u.. Before you try out anything also try and check up on the internet to substantiate what anyone tells you.. And you also need to get that kid back to the hospital.. See a specialist if possible she shouldn't be using close to that much.. |

I'm alarmed at the way folks are using the steroids without prescription. Please unless it has been specifically prescribed for you, avoid using the systemic steroids (prednisolone, dexamethasone etc). You are doing far more damage to your body than any possible benefit. 1 Like |

These could help: Vitamin D: most needed Vitamin C: also needed Omega 3/Omega 6: more of 3 and less of 6. Maybe 3:1 ratio. Magnessium: rarely but needed Stay away from triggers like: Dust Cockroaches Smoke Irritating soaps Avoid Cold Starchy foods e.g. Noodles, bread, etc. Replace palm oil with olive/coconut oil in cooking More of... Protein rich foods Fruits All the best. 1 Like |

wesley80:stuck?? You don't want to have to be on a steroid trust me.. Be very happy with ventolin and don't use your dad's medication cuz they are two different kinds.. Your dad's seretide is a controller therapy( to prevent attacks) your ventolin inhaler is to treat acute exacerbations of asthma..( to abort attacks).. |

safarigirl: I think It's spelt amenothyline. I used same tablet when I had bad cases back in my secondary school days. However, a white specialist doctor in our company hospital (He also thought me to pronounce the name of the drug) advised me against taking the tablets and instead prescribed becotide inhalers, according to him, the effects of the amino drug where much too severe for minor attacks. I stopped using them and transited to becotide which I had to discontinue after some time Co's I had to take it daily. Hope your amenothyline is worth it. |

drered:I didn't mean "stuck " literally. I only meant it has become my go to drug for attacks and I recognize the difference between Ventolin and seritide. Having used another preventive drug like bicotide I was trying to point out the effectiveness of the former. About the side effects of steroids, can you highlight any? I've been on this stuff for close to 20years. 1 Like |
