The incident in Akwa Ibom, according to a source, started when some hoodlums from an opposing group attempted to hijack election materials which was rebuffed by another group and the police had to step in shooting sporadically into the air to maintain peace. He explained that in the milieu that ensued, many of the delegates, who had thronged the party secretariat scampered for their lives and some killed in the process. As at press time, we could not ascertain the real cause of the problem but it was gathered that candidates from the former deputy governor’s camp Mr Nsima Ekere were mostly affected. All efforts to get the views of the former number two citizen in the state proved abortive as all his telephone lines were off. One of the PDP members from Eastern Obolo, Eyo Okon, who spoke with our correspondent, said that there was serious fight between two factions of PDP who had problems over who would make the list of the delegates from the area. here are their pictures including the chapter chairman of PDP Onna.

Assam deplores A’Ibom PDP ward congresses ...re-affirms support for Jonathan’s second term bid Posted by: iReporter Winifred George A frontline governorship aspirant in Akwa Ibom State, Chief Assam Ekanem Assam SAN has queried the credibility of Saturday’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ad-hoc delegates’ election, alleging that the exercise was fraught with widespread electoral fraud. Speaking to our reporter, Assam, who is the immediate past Nigerian Ambassador to Russia and the Belarus, accused the Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Ward Congresses Committee, Senator Ibrahim Abdulazeez of acting the ‘prepared script’ of the State Governor, Chief Godswill Akpabio. He said that it was common knowledge in the state and beyond that Governor Akpabio was hell-bent on imposing the immediate past Secretary to State Government, Mr. Udom Gabriel Emmanuel as the next governor in 2015 hence the frantic move to rig the ward congresses. According to him, what transpired on Saturday in the guise of ward primaries was a far-cry from what was expected of a free, fair and transparent election, alleging that only ‘fake and photocopied’ election materials were distributed to the 329 wards in the state. The Senior Advocate of Nigeria disclosed that there was a consensus among all aggrieved governorship aspirants to petition the National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu on Saturday’s ‘flawed’ ward congresses. Assam, vowed to partner with other aspirants to ensure that free, transparent and credible party primaries are conducted in the state, maintaining that they would not allow the governor to impose his preferred candidate on the party. “What transpired in the guise of ward congresses was nothing but a ruse, a game of deceit which we the aspirants will not condone. “I was at the state party secretariat along with other aspirants and I must sincerely tell you the materials for the election were fake, while the result sheets were mere photocopies bearing the same code number. “We suspect that the original copies have been confiscated by Akpabio and we learnt that the result of the exercise was prepared beforehand at the Government House for the sole purpose to imposing his anointed candidate. “We are too republican for that kind of nonsense and we would prove to all Nigerians that Akwa Ibom state does not belong to one person but all of us”, Assam said. Meanwhile, Assam has reiterated his support for President Goodluck Jonathan’s re-election bid, saying that as a loyal party man he would not continue to work for the realization of the President’s second term aspiration. He praised Jonathan for displaying genuine qualities of a democrat and for his transformation agenda, adding that Nigerians would have a better deal during Jonathan’s second term in government.

Chief Dr Godswill Akpabio has charged the aspirants jostling to take over from him as Governor of the state under the umbrella of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to go back to their Wards to be elected as delegates in the forthcoming primaries of the party. The governor who stated this while addressing thousands of party faithful and supporters who had stormed the Ibom International Airport to welcome him, disclosed that the guidelines stipulated that only elected delegates at the ward level would be qualified to vote at the governorship and other elective primaries. Akpabio who was accompanied by the state Chairman of the party, Obong Paul Ekpo, the Secretary to state government, Mr Udom Emmanuel and other party elders on their return from a meeting with the Integration Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) also promised that the party would ensure a level playing ground for all aspirants contesting for the elections. The excited governor while thanking the mammoth crowd and supporters who thronged the airport to receive him assured them that they are on the right track. He announced that the new stadium will be commissioned on the 6th of November by President Jonathan and at least two other heads of state. He explained that he has never incited the youths against elders as alleged by Chief Don Etiebet noting that he only encouraged the youths to take the destiny of the state in their hands. In his words, “When you 50 and above, you are counting down. The future of this state is in your hands. You have a duty to stand by the truth, justice and equity.” BUILD UP TO THE ABUJA PDP MEETING Earlier in the week, it was widely reported that some party members were aggrieved with the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Akwa Ibom State. According to the reports, a section of the party wanted the immediate removal of Obong Paul Ekpo as the state chairman of the party. The reports were however confirmed when Chief Don Etiebiet, and other party faithful addressed a press conference on THE 6th of October, 2014 at the NUJ Press Centre, Uyo on what they termed “MATTERS OF GRAVE CONCERN TO THE ELDERS AND LEADERS IN THE STATE AS THE FORTH COMING CONGRESSES AND PRIMARIES OF THE PEOPLES DEMOCRATIC PARTY (PDP) DRAW NEAR”. Etiebiet, while lamenting his inability to influence decisions in the party, stated “As we approach the party congresses, primaries and general elections, it is sad to say that majority of the PDP founders and financiers in the state have been shut out of the party and excluded from the political activities “Even an Elder and a leader of the party like myself have no representative from my ward in the 18 member LGA Chapter Executive in Oruk Anam Local Government Area. This is to ridicule me before my very own villagers to taunt me for not being able to have somebody from Ikot-Ibritam, Ward1, the headquarters of the LGC elected into the LGA PDP Chapter Executive adding, nobody can say democracy was served in the process of these congresses”, Etiebiet wept. Etiebiet said he and his colleagues were “deliberately shut out so that the Governor can run the Party as his personal property and do as he likes with his handpicked Chairman who has sworn to support him in whatever he likes to do during those primaries and blood brother State Secretary of the Party, Barr. Ibanga Akpabio to impose candidates”. Etiebiet’s press conference snowballed into a full-fledged petition to the national leadership of the party. In the petition, the complainants, besides accusing Obong Paul Ekpo of being biased, challenged the election that brought Ekpo into office while also asking the party to strike out the zoning principle. Notwithstanding, Etiebiet had few days before the Abuja meeting, led one of the governorship aspirants, Obong Umana Umana to consult the PDP in Akwa Ibom State. At the consultation ceremony, Umana thanked the party leadership for a job well done and informed that he joined the party in 2003, and has since then been contributing diligently to growth the party. Umana, who said he had been living in the state since 1989, boasted ‘so I know Akwa Ibom and the people, and they too know me.’ In his speech, the State PDP Chairman, Mr Paul Ekpo thanked Umana and his campaign organisation, Ibom Development Network, for consulting with the party before the primaries begin. He acknowledged Umana’s support to the party over the years, saying that the party will certainly support the former SSG if he picks up the ticket at the November 29 primary. SHOW OF SHAME AS HIRED TOUTS PROTEST IN ABUJA It was however ironical that some party stalwarts of the PDP, who had earlier addressed a press conference and consulted the party in Uyo , went a step further and rented some street urchins and park touts as crowd in Abuja to protest against the party leadership in Abuja. The aspirants and cohorts who had talked down on youths and took issues with Akpabio over his assertion that the “future belonged to youths” during the earlier briefing with the media, followed up with hiring of Abuja indigenes to protest in Abuja. The protest was led by a man dressed in light blue “babaringa”. He was seen throughout the day with his colleagues in front of the Legacy House chanted carrying placards and chanting songs in the local hausa language. Some of the placards they carried read, “PAUL EKPO IS BIAS”, NO TO ZONING”, “NO TO IMPOSITION. Confirming the protests upon return from Abuja, former Governor of the state, Otuekong Idongesit Nkanga said, “I have heard stories of protests in Abuja against the Akwa Ibom State PDP exco. I wonder if you’ll call a rented crowd of a few people a genuine protest because none of those carrying placards were from Akwa Ibom State. They were hired. They were later chased away by officials of the National party headquarters”. Commenting on the matter, the State Chairman of the Party, Chief Paul Ekpo said it was curious that an Akwa Ibom matter, which had never elicited any form of protest in Akwa Ibom was witnessing Abuja residents carrying placards and demonstrating against a party leadership elected in Akwa Ibom State. Ekpo maintained that on Monday those who addressed the press and spoke against the leadership of the party came to the party secretariat in Uyo for a consultation and mentioned those who came to include Obong Umana Umana, former SSG; Otuekong Don Etiebet, a Board of Trustees member and many others. Ekpo maintained that on that occasion, they did not betray any grievance against the party leadership and described as unfortunate and strange the recourse to asking Abuja indigenes to change the course of history of Akwa Ibom State. He posited that the party had an internal mechanism for addressing grievances and if any party member had any problem in Akwa Ibom he or she should have exploited same and not come to Abuja and hired an admixture of miscreants and rabble-rousers to dent the image of the party before a global audience. He further stated the architect of what he described as “a show of shame” were selfish politicians who placed their self-interests above the common good of the party and should be sanctioned for embarrassing the party. In a separate comment, Senator Anietie Okon said the aggrieved stalwarts acted out of desperation knowing that they were very unpopular in Akwa Ibom State and could not have been able to muster any kind of protest without the ire of the masses. He stated that democracy was localized in geopolitical spheres and you cannot come to Abuja to protest about the leadership of the party in Akwa Ibom State. He said the entire charade was reminiscent of the kind of crowd renting the country used to witness during the Abacha years. On his part, member board of trustees of the party, Senator Emmanuel Ibok Essien who described the dissident elders as political desperadoes cautioned them to stop fanning embers of discord among party faithful and should show example by joining hands with the leadership of the party in the state. ABUJA MEETING: OBONG ATTAH SAYS ELDERS ARE NOT CARRIED ALONG At the meeting of the Integration committee of the PDP, a former governor of the state and member of the board of trustees, Obong Victor Attah lamented that elders of the party were not being carried along. He also complained that the party register is kept at the Government House in Uyo. He also called for a level playing field for all aspirants seeking elections on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). ETIEBIET SAYS PARTY EXCO WAS NOT DULY ELECTED Another member of the Board of trustees of the PDP, Atuekong Don Etiebiet challenged the election that brought in Obong Paul Ekpo. He accused the State Chairman of PDP Akwa Ibom State of being incompetent and said his election as party chairman was fraudulent and called for dissolution of the state exco of the party. Though Etiebiet said he was in support of the zoning principle, he however recommended a care taker committee to take over the activities of the party. PAUL EKPO SILENCED CRITICS WITH VIDEO CLIPS The state chairman of the party, Obong Paul Ekpo rose to defend the allegations levelled against him by tendering and playing a DVD, containing clips from relevant political events. The ten minute video clip played to the amazement of the committee members and even the critics showed as follows: The first scene showed Obong Victor Attah lifting the hands of defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) Governorship candidate, Senator John James Akpanudoedehe at St Primary School, Obio Offot, Uyo. The second scene also showed an ecstatic Don Etiebiet heartily congratulating Paul Ekpo as the newly elected chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party. Etiebiet said in the video that the election was free, transparent and well conducted. He charged other states in the video to take a clue from Akwa Ibom State in the conduct of their internal party elections. The third scene showed Obong Umana Okon Umana and Obong Bassey Albert (OBA)as being busy in their assignments as returning officers of Nsit Ubium and Ibiono Ibom respectively. It ended with a jubilant Bassey Albert popping champagne and celebrating to the victory of Paul Ekpo with friends. The next scene showed several newspaper clippings where Umana Umana and Bassey Albert congratulated the new PDP Chairman, Obong Paul Ekpo. The 10 minute political thriller ended with the recent consultation of Obong Umana Okon Umana to the party in Uyo. Ekpo also asked how the petitioners could call him incompetent when he had delivered all 31 Local Government Areas to the PDP. IBOKESSIEN FURIOUS WITH ATTAH A founding member of the party, Senator Emmanuel Ibokessien, who is also a member of the board of trustees, a member of the national executive committee (NEC) and a member of the national caucus took a swipe at ex-governor Victor Attah. He warned Attah not to carry himself around as the most important member of the party. Ibokessien reminded Attah that he (Ibokessien) introduced him to the party and that he vividly recalls that Attah bought him a bottle of St Remy for that gesture. Senator Ibokessien pointedly accused Attah of being a liar, stating that consistent elders of the party who mean well for the party are carried along. He said that zoning is what he (Attah) stood for in 2006 and that it shouldn’t be different to the people of Eket Senatorial District. Ibokessien cautioned the party that if zoning is not strictly adhered to, then the party will be calling for anarchy and violence. He reminded Don Etiebiet of his inconsistencies and urged him to present himself for proper reception back into the party after his sojourn at the All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP). SENATOR ANIETIE OKON QUESTIONS CAPACITY OF PETITIONERS On his part, Senator Anietie Okon questioned the capacity of the petitioners and wondered if they were true members of the PDP. He wondered how Obong Victor Attah a BOT member of the PDP could have lifted the hand of an ACN governor ship candidate in 2011 if he was truly a PDP member. Okon also reminded Etiebet how he had left the PDP for ANPP and on coming back to the PDP had not followed laid down procedure to be integrated back into the PDP. He summarised that both men had no locus standi to present the petition as PDP members. PARTY OBSERVED PETITION WAS NOT SIGNED The chairman of the Integration committee, Prof Iya Abubakar questioned why the petitioners had not signed the petition. AKPABIO, PAUL EKPO, UDOM RECEIVE HEROIC WELCOME As early as 8am, thousands of party faithful, elders, women and youth groups, and cultural troops invaded the Ibom International airport awaiting the arrival of the victorious PDP team led by the leader of the party in the state, Chief Dr Godswill Akpabio. At about few minutes to one, the first plane, an Arik airbus carrying elders of the party, commissioners, special advisers and board members landed. Among them were Senator Anietie Okon, Chief Michael Afangideh, Senator Emmanuel Ibokessien, wife of a former deputy governor in the state, Mrs Atim Etim Okpoyo, Chief Otu Robert, Crown Prince Ekpe Atakpo, Obong T O Akpan, Sir Sunday Udo Akpan, Chief Okokon Etuk, Bishop C O Akpan, Obong E E Umana, Barr Christy Akpan, Obonganwan Grace Inyang. Also present were Chief Senas Ukpanah, Chief Essien Esema, Dr Val Attah, Chief Cyril Ekiko, Chief Francis Una, Elder Ben Udobia, Engr Billy Etuk, Lovina Umoefah, Dr Maria Ikrok, Engr Ignatius Edet, Chief Israel Utit, Chief Lambert Udoh, Chief Moses Ekpo, General Afangideh, Chief A S Akpan (Apex), Barr Goddy Umoh and Barr Jerry Akpan. About 50 minutes later, a Dana airbus carrying the deputy governor of the state, Noble Lady Valerie Ebe, Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Sam Ikon, Deputy Speaker, Rt Hon Udo Kierian Akpan, women leaders of the party and executive members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). At about 5.43pm, the Executive Governor of the State, Chief Godswill Akpabio landed in the company of Obong Paul Ekpo, the state chairman of the PDP, the SSG, Deacon Udom Emmanuel, and the new President of the Nigerian Football Federation, Amaju Pinnick. Addressing the crowd, Obong Paul Ekpo thanked the people for turning out en masse and reported that Wednesday’s meeting was successful. He pledged his resolve to move the party forward and give all aspirants a level playing field. He said those fighting the party are the ones attempting to impose themselves on the people of the state. He noted that the party will have zero tolerance for indiscipline and anti- party activities.

There is palpable tension and disaffection in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) family in Akwa Ibom State as governorship aspirants on the party’s platform have continued to challenge the credibility of Saturday’s ad-hoc delegates’ congress. The ward congresses, which did not commence until about 5p.m due to late arrival of election materials, and did not at all in some wards on Saturday, was characterized by widespread reports of irregularities and violence leading to the death of no fewer than four persons. Specifically, there were allegations by some of the governorship aspirants that only fake and photocopied materials were distributed for the congresses at the 329 wards in the state, a development which they maintained was unacceptable’. There was also an atmosphere of tension and uncertainty at the State Secretariat as heavily armed security operatives assaulted some of the governorship aspirants who had assembled at the party office to witness the distribution of materials to the various wards. The State Police Commissioner, Gabriel Achong was seen barking orders to the aspirants to leave the party secretariat failing which he would order his men to throw them and their aides out of the party’s premises. Furthermore the aspirants have disclosed their intention to petition the National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Adamu Mua’zu, accusing the State Governor, Chief Godswill Akpabio of collaborating with the Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Ward Congresses Committee, Senator Ibrahim Abdulazeez to manipulate the exercise. In fact, the aspirants, who expressed disaffection with the lack of transparency that characterized the ward congresses, alleged that the original copies of the result sheets were seized by Governor Akpabio, who connived with Senator Abdulazeez to compile the final result on Friday at the Government House, Uyo. According to them, the Governor was bent on manipulating the election processes and arm-twisting other aspirants to ensure the emergence of his ‘anointed candidate, the immediate past Secretary to the State Government, Udom Gabriel Emmanuel as governor in 2015. In fact some of the governorship hopefuls confided in our correspondent that some chieftains of the PDP including a former governor of the state, Obong Victor Attah, Chief Don Etiebet etc may dump the party if Akpabio succeeds in imposing his preferred successor. Speaking, one of the leading governorship aspirants in the state and the immediate past Nigerian Ambassador to Russia and the Belarus, Chief Assam E. Assam, called for the enthronement of internal democracy in the state. Describing the PDP as the only party that holds so much hope for Nigerians, Assam called for caution and sincerity on the part of party officials entrusted with conducting party congresses. He promised to continue to support the State Governor, Chief Akpabio and the party in the bid to ensure that President Goodluck Jonathan is re-elected in 2015 for a second term in office. Another Governorship Aspirant who spoke with our correspondent stressed that the Divisional Police Officer of ONNA L.G.A collaborated with the erstwhile SSG, Mr. Udom Gabriel Emmanuel, to hijack materials that were meant for the 12 wards in the local government to his residence, which was barricaded by men of the Nigerian Police Force and the Nigerian Army. he stated that the DPO was not a retuning officer and as such has no right to had abducted the ad-hoc delegate election materials. He called on the National leadership of the party to intervene for the interest of peace, law and order, and that of the party to avoid unforeseen outcome of imposition. He also promised to give his unalloyed support to the re-election of President Goodluck Jonathan. |
