The oldest man in thhe Ajao family stood up. His face was expressionless. He went to Mr. Ajao, who had a victorious glow emitting from his eyes. All eyes were on the man. Felicia thought he was going to face her mother whose eyes in now a source of the water on her cloth. She thought he would mouth-wash her.
Before anybody could blink, he gave Mr.Ajao a resounding slap, which made Felicia's head vibrate.
Silence.
The world seems to pause. Mouths opened.
Eyes blinked.
Heads raised.
'We do not spread our underwear in the public. You should have called a smaller family meeting; in fact, not in front of this girl', he said to pointing to Felicia whose mouth was widely agap.
Felicia would have argued in her mind that she was not a girl, and that she was old enough to watch it, but today, she did not want to be there.
'Baba, what has he done now',a hefty man shouted.
'Shut up!!!' A man shouted.
'You can't tell him to shut up',a sturdy man retaliated.
' Are you both crazy?'An angry, fat woman asked, 'is it my father you are talking to like that?'
'Are you asking me?'The hefty man replied her.
' You are very foolish', she said as she stood up hastily, went to his seat as if she only want to face him before talking to him, then she slapped his face.
His eyes became red, shadow clouded under his eyes. The vein in his neck throbbed. His hand was quicker than he himself could have controled it. He moved his hands to connect to her face, the force of the slap moved her backward. She screamed in pain and held her face. She rushed to him, held his clothe, and started shouting, raining curses on him as she tried to hit him to the floor.
'Is that my sister you slapped'.
' Look at how he is beating my sister'.
The whole place became a battle field; they started throwing things at one another.
The fight was so much that the whole place became filled with noises and curses.
This fight compelled the other family to intervene. Even, the old men tried to help, and this was beginning to quench the fire of the fight, until someone hit the oldest men in Mrs. Ajao's family. This fueled the fire of the fight again.
As they were fighting, someone hit the Keg Bolu brought into the house. Its liquid content ran for safety from the fight to the kitchen. It saw no other place to hide so it hid behind the gas cylinder, while some of it rushed to hide in the rug; the others decided to find solace in the keg.
Felicia was surprise at this turmoil. Her head was dry. She could not think; she needed to leave the sitting room. So, she stood up to leave the room when someone said the unexpected; the thing she dreaded most in her life. The only thing she had wished and prayed secretly was a lie.
'He did not even keep it away from that girl... that girl that is not their daughter', the person shouted at the top of her voice.
Felicia turned to look at the speaker. Her eyes roamed about in the room. She searched swiftly to see if there was any other girl in the room.
She was the only girl in the house.
She looked at her father, his head was forward. The tiny smile that had been lingering on his lips disappeared.
She moved her head slowly to look at her mother. A blow rocked her face- someone had mistakenly hit her. This did not stop herself from looking at her mother.Their eyes met. Fear, surprise and anxiety reflected in her mother eyes.
'Is it true?' She asked her mother, whispering. She knew she could not talk above that, even though, the noise over shadowed her voice. She was not sure her mother heard her.
'Is it true?'
Her mother nodded.

Felicia was so confused. She could not absorb all the bad things happening, so, she went to her room dejectedly, laid on her bed, and could not fathom the reason the day was so bad for her.
She dozed off.
She slept till 1am, and was woken by the noise again. She went to the parlour, and was surprised to meet a full house. Nobody had left the house despite the serious fight.
She surveyed the sitting room as she stood by the door. Some were still panting; blood stain was seen on the cloth of others; thanks to the bulbs in the parlour, she was able to see swolen eyes, noses, cheeks e.t.c
Mummy Prince was petting her mother.
' You just have to take her back', one of her mother's family started, and stopped when he saw Felicia standing at the door; his look called the attention of the other members of the family to her.
Her mother rushed to her, and held her tightly in a warm embrace.
Her tears ducts opened again, causing her to cry like a baby.
'Why did you not tell me?' Felicia asked. She wondered how powerless she would now be in the presence of Shekemi who had always wished to lord over her. She wondered what her friends would say to her and about her (behind her backs).
'We are sorry', her mother said, 'we are sorry'.
She sniffed, twice at a time. Forgeting that she was getting near adulthood, and that she was in front of adults, she cried her eyes into her mother's blue ankara again.
She paused, and released herself from her mother's grasp.
' Who are my parent?' She managed to ask.
Her mother swallowed hard. She turned to Mr.Ajao, and they spoke to themselve with the eyes as if they do not have any misunderstanding.
She turned to Felicia.
'We...'
Bang!!! Someone banged on the door.
Everybody jiggled on their seat. The ones that had started dozing off almost jumped out of their seat.
Felicia heart jolted from her chest to her mouth, and ran back to her chest within a seconds.
The bang came again- coming hard this time.
People, women especially, changed their sitting position to the edge of the seetees.
'Who are you?' asked the shuddering voice of her father.
' Open this door before I break it down', a voice commanded from outside the room.
' Who are you?' Her father asked again, as he pointed at some men to come nearer.
'I will break this door down'.
He whispered to them.
' Please, we do not have what you need', her father shouted again.
Eyes were fixed and widened.
Breathe were seized.
The men stood up and began to leave the room hurriedly.
'Gbom'.
The door was forced opened, and 7 masked men entered the room, all holding a rifle.
'Everybody face down'.
