They started using the name "Super Eagles" in 1990 during the time of Alex Akinyele as Sport Minister and Emeka Omeruah as NFA Chairman. The first game they played with the name "Super Eagles" was the game between Nigeria and Burkina Faso in 1991. The match ended 8-1 in favor of Nigeria.
