Lagos (INVESTADVOCATE)-The Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) all-share index (ASI) on Thursday recorded its lowest loss in five (5) years to 20 percent from its 2014 high, heading for a bear market.

The NSE ASI declined 4.07 percent to close at 34,494.93 basis points, while market capitalisation lost 484.74 billion to close at N11.43 trillion, in response to sustained selling pressure, according to Cordros report.

Current Year-to-Date (YTD) returns at the Nigerian bourse stands at a negative 16.54 percent.

With this development at the end of transactions,  the Nigerian equities market went down in one of the longest losing streak to nine (9) consecutive sessions since January 2009; thereby hitting the highest one-day loss in more than four (4) years.

Cordros say sustained sell-offs saw the NSE ASI shed the most since 19th March 2010. ‘’This decline came on the back of OPEC's decision to cut oil demand forecast,’’ the report said.

Market breadth ended woefully as the NSE recorded five (5) gainers and 49 losers. Nigerian Aviation Handling Company (NAHCO) led the gainers chart, while cement manufacture Lafarge Wapco Nigeria Plc led the losers table.

In terms of sectoral performance, all of the five (5) NSE sectoral indices mirrored the broader markets performance. ‘’Once again the industrial goods index topped the losers chart with a significant 6.57 percent loss, the oil/gas index followed with a 5.70 percent, while the consumer goods, banking and insurance indices also lost by, 4.14 percent, 3.51 percent and 2.10 percent respectively,’’ the report affirmed.

Similarly, market turnover shows that volume traded climbed up 231.66 percent to 1.33billion shares, worth N8.37billion and traded in 4,188 deals, compared to a negative 46.83 percent reported in the previous session.

‘’We posit a positive outcome in tomorrow's trading session, as we expect investors to capitalise on fallen share prices,’’ the Cordros report said.

Any investor should take advantage of either diverting his investment or use the Warren Buffet theory to stock up his portfolio.

Though the indicators are bad for the Nigerian Economy at the moment it will be a huge risk to try invest in the Nigerian Economy at the moment.

The economy is messed up and we are supposed to have a Harvard trained professor co-ordinating it.

God will save Nigeria from the thieves ruling and managing our economy.

I think it can only get worst for a while. Gives people like myself who withdrew their funds as far back as 2010 to come back to the market buying low. The crash can't continue.

Eye firmly on Access Bank, GTB and Dangote's listings.

Lol, from N163/164 it was trading 2 weeks ago, it is going for N174/175 depending on where you.are buying.

And the trend seems to be southward even next week before our foreign reserve has been depleted so there is little the CBN can do right now to cushion the shock.

Na, the biggest was during the global financial meltdown. The operators had to shutdown the market to.close trading to avoid complete collapse.

Yeah right if youre a student of Warren Buffet trade secrets and theory.

It could be a HIT or a MISS. The risk is worth taking if you have idle slush funds to tie down. But trust Real Estate is the Real Deal.

Not from the words of my business lecturers. They kept re-iterating the sentiment that failing economies at the time were only those run on credit and taxation majorly.

I had one specific tutor who made the global financial meltdown a running joke every class he took.

Stock market pricing is driven mostly by rumours and speculation only few times is it based on a company performance in a trade year.

The truth was that ours was insulated to some extent because we were not hooked directly to any markets in the West so they may be right to some extent but the shock wave of the collapse sent panic across the world that investors hurriedly pull out their portfolios and hence most market regulators had to close the market to avoid trading.

Before if the OPEC want to drive up oil prices, they will only threaten to cut production and you will stock of Oil companies jump the roof. But with fracking and shale gas now, there is no threat that will work for oil now and that is why oil price keep going south since 2weeks now.

The effect is what you are seeing in the market.

The simple fundamental applying to our market is this

An economy of vast number of high-end consumers that produces nothing of value anchored on a single natural resource (crude oil) which is now facing existential competition from alternative products.

The night will be long.

Shebi we are too scared to revolt and institute good responsive governance in our country. Well well the wahala is coming to our doorstep now.

You assume figures on google is the trading price right. Okay, take 165.60 to a bank tomorrow or to a bureau de change and seek for dollars.

Forget those economic magical stories you read or hear. The naira has declined. Only CBN can strengthen it and by the way, there is no trading today so the figure you have is not today's price but a carry over price.

Oga, carry over price or not. This is the official rate at the moment. Black market is always different, but this is the CBN conversion rate. You may check any website you like for the conversion (and there are many), the price would be about the same. Stop peddling falsehood.

Besides, non-economists always assume a weakening currency is necessarily a bad thing. It would be bad for importers as imports are more expensive, but it would be great for exporters. Nigerian oil would be cheaper on the intl market. The problem with this is that Nigeria is a mostly importing country, thus it could be bad for our balance of trade.

Unfortunately as we proceed towards election period, I see it depreciate further to around N200 to a dollar. See no escape for the naira unfortunately.

N200 bros will be total collapse to happen. Every company that depend on importation will close up. Don't think it will get to N200 really.

That will be fatal to the Nation

Unfortunately I don't share ur optimism. I don't desire it also but as we proceed towards election where corrupt acts normally abound, i see more pressure on the naira.

We can't to N200 before CBN acts. The implication of allowing it slide up to that level will be more hurting to the Government as it will affect them and their planning than the average man except for extra spending it will cause him base on price differential.

If Govt. allows it, remember they need to pay debts and services their loans and other public infrastructural need that will go higher if they allow it slide that low.

I expect the CBN to act further than they did last week anyway taking some steps to reduce the pressure on the Naira.

The government had a Sovereign wealth fund, excess crude account and others. The NGF knew the money will be stolen if left in the hands of the FG and they have been proved right.

Reserve low, no excess crude account, just SWF. Where is the money now?

You believed that
You agreed with Amaechi that the best way is: share it and save nothing

Unfortunately for you and Amaechi and APC: those are some of the instruments available to the FG and the wise Harvard Professor to intervene on the Economy at the appropriate time!!!!!
