General Muhammadu Buhari
The Presidential Candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) retired General Muhammadu Buhari yesterday in Jigawa State described the allegation of corruption levelled against him by the President Goodluck Jonathan campaign team as “nonsense, untrue and unfounded.” The Director, Presidential Campaign Council of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr. Mike Omeri had in a press statement accused General Buhari of exhibiting double standard in public administration while in government.

Speaking to newsmen in Dutse, General Buhari said there is no iota of truth in the entire allegation, adding that “what happened was that, we have a policy during my regime that anybody that comes into the country his/her luggage should be checked at the Airport”.

Later in a statement issued by his spokesman, Yinka Odumakin, Buhari said, “Our attention has been drawn to another lousy outing by President Goodluck Jonathan’s ‘Chemical Ali,’ Mike Omeri...who ran to foul the atmosphere with a thoughtless charge that General Buhari is not sincere about his resolve to rid Nigeria of corruption.”

He said Omeri’s only evidence to support his assertion is the fabled “53 suitcases” of 1984.

Buhari explained thus: “in 1984, the Emir of Gwandu whose son (Almustapha Jokolo) was ADC to General Buhari was returning to the country from overseas. The head of state, on learning of his arrival, asked his son to go and receive him at the airport as they were only playing squash at the time.”

“Coincidentally, the Nigerian ambassador to Libya at the time, Dr Tahir Waziri had arrived at the same time with the emir with his three wives and 16 children. They all came with their belongings as he was coming home to take up a new appointment as chief of protocol to the head of state.”

“It was the suitcases of the family of 20 that were counted as belonging to the emir and falsely presented to the public. General Buhari has over the years asked those who have questions over the matter to go to Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, who was at the head of Customs operations at the airport on the day,” his spokesperson said.

Meanwhile, Buhari has asked Jonathan to explain “what happened to the case of N104m seized from Nancy Ebere Nwosu who allegedly swore to an affidavit to the EFCC that she was laundering money for Dame Patience Jonathan.”

He also wants the president to explain “the announcement by the then EFCC spokesman, Mr Osita Nwajah on September 11, 2006 that the sum of USD13.5 million was seized from another associate of Mrs. Jonathan which the anti-graft body said belonged to the now first lady.”

Buhari says Nigerians need an explanation on “who presided over the FEC meeting on October 2009, where a 4 km runway at Abuja Airport was awarded for N64bn? Whereas, late President Yar’adua was already in Saudi Hospital as at the time!”

Also, Nigerians need to know “what happened to the USD30billion Yar’adua left in the excess crude account that is virtually empty now?

The spokesperson explained that no amount of cheap blackmail will stop the desired change Nigerians are poised to effect in April polls.

Atiku has maintained Buhari did in fact call him, why did Buhari call the controller at our international airport when his ADC's dad has undeclared loot in 53 suitcases?

The blind stupidity and loyalty of some Nigerians never ceases to amaze me.... I do not blame the politicians, after all the saying that "a people get the government they deserve" is very true....

At this point I dont even blame the politicians for the state of the nation....it is the idiot Nigerians who never take them to task who I blame

for the record i support no party in Nigeria they are as bad as each other, but just because you are a supporter of Buhari doesnt mean you cannot admit that it was a politically motivated arrest and he was wrong...

some of us were around at that time so we know what happened, fela was travelling to a concert with 36 band members, as the band leader all the money was with him £1600... only a complete slowpoke would assume that the £1600 were for him alone and that the other 36 would be travelling without one penny between all of them.....

No other money was found on any of the people travelling with him so his assertion that the money was the travelling expenses for the entire group is entirely plausible....

He simply kept all the money in one place rather than divide it up amongst everybody, yet people are insisting that for this a 10 year sentence was justifiable.......

bloody illiterates ...... thats why the country is in the state its in

Thank you!

I ignored your first post but just need to understand the reason for your balderdash.

Banicansta did a perfect job though.

What do you understand by the bold part you keep mentioning? If i understand what money laundering is, the man fela did not commit a crime, if he is going with 45 people as confirmed in your post, dividing that amount found on him among those people or are you saying those people should not be taken care of?

If he divided HIS 1600 pounds into 45 and then handed them over to 45 people so as to beat the system, it's still money laundering according to the laws then. remember we are talking "if" here..

You know how people launder money nowadays by using other people's account to launder? same can be attributed to this..

in this current era, people launder money by breaking down the bulk money and then sending them out through multiple bank accounts in different people's name.

You still want more?

Just go to the bank to read what is in every bank's wall about money laundering.

Double mouthed people. Ignorance is not an excuse. If Fela wass not jailed for the offence he commited its you people that will still accuse the government that some people are above the law. If you want to critisize Buhari, do it construtively putting legality into consideration. You people were saying Idiagbon was the one ruling then, now you are accusing Buhari of Fela's predicament. We are all Nigerians living right here in Nigeria during the regime. I was not jailed neither were you. Because we never went against the law. This tampering of justice with mercy is what has led Nigeria to where we are today. Nigeria will never move foward if we continue to alter justice for mercy.
My friend you need to relax and read through my comment again.

I think this quote alone makes buhari the ideal candidate for nigeria. its like how a supposedly civilized country, america, which all you sell out negros love so much jailed wesley snipes for his own hard earned money without tempering justice with mercy even after wesley paid all his back taxes. the point being for nigeria to be a civilized nation like america we need people like buhari who apply the laws irrespective of who you are or how mundane your crime seems to most unlawful people. so if buhari is a sick man for jailing fela then america must be a sick country for jailing wesley snipes because they were both jailed for their own hard earned money. so the point here is to be a civilized nation, we need leaders who apply the laws. this is why all you negros run to america. because it is ' civilized ' and yet you dont want leaders who will civilize your own country

I heard you say Fela should have been pardoned on moral grounds but Fela is wrong legally.

But my question is do you think such a law makes sense?

with the level of corruption from the previous government, everyone irrespective of your status was put in check in buhari regime. same reason my family didn't own a house in Allen avenue Ikeja, in compliance with the one house per person degree. unlike this present regime full of corruption and impunity, the buhari regime put everyone in check irrespective of your social or economic status.

Actually in the 1970s Fela Anikulapo Kuti was a thorn in the flesh of all Military governments. Apart from his music which he used as a weapon against all these governments. He hadappaid column in the Punch. newspapers where he attacked. dictatorship of the. military. He also ppublishedd a. mini paper callled MOP(Movement of the people) which. was. distributed free of charge to all. secondary schools and universities. It was these twin vehicles Fela used. to. attack corruuption and military dictatorship.

In 1977 Col Muhamadu Buhari was the commissioner for. Petroleum and there was a rumour propagate. by Dr Tai Solarin that 2.8 billion. Naiira was missing froom the. FG coffers.
Fela and aa lot. of critics picked up these. rumours to. attack the Obasanjo military government of the. time, throughhis music and paper's. .
It was obvious. thaat. aall the militaryofficers of that period including Obasanjo,Yar'Adua,Danjuma,Idiagbon,Babangida and otthers were waitingfor a chance to take their pound of flesh. from Fela.
So. what started with the burning of Felas house by un known soldiers continued with the. arrest and sentencing to prision for foreign exchange fraud under the Buhari/Idiagbon regime.
