Traditional marriages should be held in higher regard over white weddings. White weddings are not our culture and are a good example of post-colonial mentality inflicting our African minds. Traditional weddings in pre-colonial times involved presentation of gifts from the man's family to the woman's. The advent of colonialism changed those gifts to money. In many places money and gifts. A family that asks for 1 million naira should be able to refund you the same amount if their daughter does not meet your expectations. In a perfect world things would be done like the white people: A and B meet, fall in love, get married then get divorced. Who wins? The society! |
