bushdoc9919:

We were still oil dependent. Plus....value of naira= things cost much cheaper.

And anyway it was just two years after the oil shock....so still early days before the real effects kicked in....

Yes because 1)The refineries were still relatively new. 2) They were still undergoing Turn around maintenance as and at when due (it was during IBB's rule that we fell behind)...3) There were fewer cars on the road than now.

What Buhari should have done was build more refineries.

Maitatsine was still active up till early 1985.....

Yeah....but the problem was WE WERE STILL OIL DEPENDENT. Inflation fell, I daresay, because of the increased fiscal discipline.
The oil dependency would have still done us in

All true.

Buhari is still too old....there are other younger Northerners who could do a good job, either in government or in opposition. Ditto for Southerners.

I seriously don't understand this unprofitable attachment to america.
We need to wean ourselves off america for our own good.

First Nigeria will not scatter. Secondly, Jonathan is not transparent and excessively corrupt - nobody in his right mind make a deal with such person.

How can one justify smuggling money to South Africa to procure illegal arms when there legitimate ways to get it? Why is Jonathan afraid of the Front gate? Why must he always enter his good neighbour's house by jumping over the fence at the back-yard? Why is he exporting his Stealing-Is-Not-Corruption style of Government to other countries?

The Zoologist must be voted out before he sinks this nation with anarchy and corruption.
GEJ have come to stay.
Send the message clear to your old and expired GMB.
You and your ilks planned dissuading GEJ from declaring via killing of innocent children through your Bokoharam
but it did not stop him.

Whether GEJ read Zoology or not is immaterial in this matter; the fact still remains t
hat there is no vacancy in ASO ROCK.

Corruption did not start with GEJ and was present when your old and expired presidential candidate GMB was in power.

It's funny how people keep accusing USA of wanting to invade Nigeria. For what? To what benefit?

I see more than a good reason why USA shouldn't even sell a rusty pistol to Nigeria if y'all don't.

It's election time and if anything goes wrong and those weapons fall into the wrong hands what would be the fate of Nigeria? Why would America sell weapons to Nigeria after y'all have finished condemning the country and accusing them of sponsoring terrorism?
Let me stop here.
They did this to show Nigeria that they don't want our money, we should deal with ourselves.

Re: Nigerian Ambassador Blasts US Refusal To Sell Arms by gbishman: 7:56am On Nov 12, 2014
I am of the view that we are not really addressing the issue but rather allowing our emotions come between our reasoning. The issue is that the US has raised concerns about human rights abuses meted out on suspected boko haram insurgents as seen in some gruesome videos published on the internet like the one soldiers were beheading victims and throwing them into hand dug graves. Now the US which in their entirety is a nation governed by laws and have clear rules of engagement when it comes to war fare has said that that laws do not permit them to sell arms to nations found to have falling short of their laws, to me this crystal clear.
So what Nigeria should do is to prosecute those found to have gone against their rules and bring them to book and let the whole world see that we are making efforts in curbing this excesses of our boys in uniform and then and only then would be able to have a justifiable case.
Or better still meet with other western countries like Russia, China, England (our supposed colonial masters) and purchase arms from them.

If a dog that use to wag its tail when its sights, you start barking at your sight, then there is every reason to be afraid. This sudden change in America's attitude to Nigeria is very suspicious.

Nice one from the ambassador, this same americans will go around to provide arms for countries with human rights issues like Eygpt and saudi arabia.WE NEED TO FACE THE EAST

What have we been saying for long. We should have been looking east since the civil war ended but a serious lack of vision and purpose has kept us 'babyfied'. Now mommy is saying no more free meals and free laundry, go get a place to stay and settle down. I don't blame them. We are simply irresponsible. Surely a country aspiring to be within the top 20 economic powers in 6 years time should be able to forge spears and shields.

America is obviously jealous and threatened by our prospects but what they see in us we obviously don't see in ourselves.

Why will US sell Lethal and Sophisticated Arms to a country whose military always misplace her weapons to BH they are fighting. US is only being careful cause the whole world knows Nigeria Government is a Sham, forgiving me for saying it buh it's a fact. Imagine US selling stuff like drones, F-5 fighter Jets and powerful machine guns to Nigeria and BH got hold of it and before you know other Terrorist organization like ISIS and Taliban getting it from BH. The problem this country has is so big that every world power nation is being careful to sell arms to Nigeria, before Nigeria becomes a strong place where terrorists around the world comes to relax. The question any reasonable Nigerian should be asking is what is really wrong with the Nigeria Military? Are they trying to hand over this country to Islam indirectly?

USA always do like this and the reason is that they dont want ur money. Just give them contract and pay them with cruel oil they will fight and stay for 20 years.

If the US won't sell arms to nigeria to defeat, this rag heads...why don't we turn to china or russia

I wonder the kind of stvpid ally we are doing with US, an ally that is covertly supporting rag heads...Yet they accuse soldiers of human right violation...

I wonder what BH as been violating since 2002...Yeye ally whose main objective is to invade nigeria...SMH

Russia, in spite of their braggadaccio knows when not to meddle with America's interest, same goes for China.

You think South Africa just woke up one morning to meddle with Nigeria's arms deal? Nope. They were ordered to do so.

Our best bet for now is to flood the occupied territory with all of our arsenal, outnumber them and decisively deal a fatal blow to the group

This blame shifting by govt. Is absurd because as at when Mubi was taken over the equipment in its barrack according to millitary source is enough to sustain the BH for a year! Again Shekau boasts the other time that he started with knife but now he has 20 of Nigeria military APC,so with Nigeria soldiers fleeing from war front and surrendering their weapons to the insurgents;I do not think it is lack of hardware that is escalating the war but lack of morale, motivation and corruption in the military.
