You guys don't know what we want and the agreement with govt you don't become a consultant base on union activities rather you become a consultant base on educational qualification

Brove you need to do research b4 you jump into conclusion, all what you have stated and I mean all Is wrong, we do have consultants in every medical field in London. You are talking about nursing with the knowledge of Health Care workers.
When you say Doctors what Doctor? U failed to use the term Medical Doctor
I worked in the NHS England for 5 good years 2002-2007 as a medical staffing officer ,so I can tell you with Authority that your arguments are flawed
Consultant is anybody you go and meet for Consultancy, so do the Maths
If you have to meet me for advice in any field for consultancy then I would be a consultant. We even have consultants who are architects, we have consultant clinicians, Consultant pharmacist, Consultant Psychotherapists, Human resources Consultants, Consultant gynocologist. the list goes on so what's the Big deal
This is simple victory for common sense.

Bless!

Easy access to internet is making even educated people becoming more stupi.d daily; PCN will not make a pharmacy technician with 3years education a consultant nor will NMCN make a graduate nurse without additional education and training a consultant nurse. Use your brain dude, not every physician in the county is a consultant and same won't go for others.

Nurse consultants

Nurse consultants are experienced nurses who are central to providing patients with fast and convenient services.

All nurse consultants spend a minimum of 50% of their time working directly with patients. In addition, nurse consultants are responsible for developing personal practice, being involved in research and contributing to the education, training and development of other nurses.

Our beloved health sector can now see some light! ...NO more monopoly, no more 'Iatrogenic' situations with d culprit doctors going Scott free....Everyone wld be more careful and accountable.
In many ways this is better for everyone, gravitating towards world standard.

Nurses run shift in the hospital, doctors don't
If something goes wrong in management of a patient, they go for the doctor's head not the nurse
Doctors go through rigorous training, reading all the books in the world and are trained to know somethings about the other units in the health sector
Doctors spend 15hrs and more in a day on their feet while at work even at the detriment of their health and u see them collapsing at work
But yet every body wants more money but dont want the work

Funny country,Nigeria.... It's okay that this has finally been approved. I hope there will be peace now. What people fail to understand is that there will be massive confusion in the hospitals. We live in a country where everyone remotely related to the hospital is called a doctor without them making any attempt to correct such individuals. I can bet an arm and a leg that these consultant cleaners, nurses, lab scientists etc will never correct the confused patients. They will play on the ignorance of patients to claim doctors. It's all good though, that's what we want.

But wait oo,I hope the members of juhesu are willing to go through the process of becoming a consultant and not pushing the argument of "i've worked for 20years and so I should be a consultant". Even a doctor who has worked for 20years can't be a consultant without going through the process.

Our government sef. They just sign and approve things without doing proper research. I'm sure that the members of juhesu agitating for consultant status will not be kind enough to inform us that even though there are consultant nurses, they are not in hospitals but mostly used in legal cases and even though there are consultant pharmacists, they are only seen in aged people homes or private practice and not in government hospitals. But in Nigeria, they want to be in the clinics and compete with the doctors. I hope this cures their inferiority complex. It's okay sha,as far as everyone is happy...

And in response......see here

My name's John Welch and I'm
a nurse consultant in critical care here at University College London Hospitals.
So I work in the three intensive care units that we have. And I also am the lead for the three outreach teams we have. And the outreachteams are critical care nurses who go to wards in response to deteriorating patients. That involves getting in there assessing the patient and deciding what needs to be done for them, how quickly it needs to be done. Sometimes very quickly. And also setting up the background systems to make all those things happen. For me what's great
about critical care is you have one nurse to one patient so you're really able to concentrate on that one person, give absolutely the highest quality of care. And then the whole technical stuff you've got to manage all the different drug regimes the patients are getting, the bits of equipment they're attached to and then in the middle of it remembering that the patient's a person, clearly. And they may not be able to
speak but you've got to talk to them. Try and make them feel vaguely human in this very difficult setting. You're the glue that holds the whole thing together and you have to do most of it really that its down to you to get all the things done. Other people might sometimes have ideas but you're the one that's going to have to make it all happen, pull it all together. Nurse consultants are compelled to spend at least 50% of
their time in clinical work. But you can also make the connection to the top level ofthe trust and work out how our systems can be improved to help an individualpatient. I'm in a position to have a strategic input so I'm part of the groups that look at safety systems across the hospital, some of the business aspects. I don't manage anybody but I'm part of the management board for the intensive care unit. Its gratifying when something you've picked up on or your team has picked up on gets put in to the organisations policy. And that's just something about the organisationtoo, that they put people like me, clinical people, in a position to make those kinds of decisions

In other words, a consultant nurse is a very highly specialized nurse...not a nurse who trains registrar nurses....or makes overall clinical care decisions(except as a first responder)

The above is quoted from the website you linked to.....it is a transcript of the video.

The issue of consultancy is only applicable to those who merit it and not for all health workers. The only diff is that its not going to be only consultant doctors anymore but nurses, phamasists, radiologists, lab scientists and others can now become consultants if they have work or merit it. I think is a good development. People should be allow to reach the pick in their chosen career. This will put an end to unnecessary ego being displayed by the doctors in our tertiary hospitals.

From my understanding, B4 now anyone with the tittle of a Nurse weather highly trained and experience can never be called a CONSULTANT.\
But now they can Earn the title Consultant Nurses. The reason for the link I posted was to clear the Air of the myth as to *** There is no such thing as CONSULTANT NURSES* I thin you fell into that group B4 you read that post of mine.

I doubt if many posters here even know what it takes to be a consultant. it's not automatic for doctors. we go through residency training for years to become consultants. If these people want to be called consultants, then there should first be fields to specialize in, cos a consultant is a specialist in a particular field of medicine; then a residency program for them would also have to be started. And believe me, this is Nigeria, before these people even come up with the actualization of their residency fantasies, most of them would have gotten to the age of retirement and those coming behind them are even more clueless.
Now the only time I will know that GEJ and his men are high on products of bowel movement and intoxicated with effluents of micturition is when these Johesu ppl wouldn't have to go through residency programs to become consultants.

Crust of long story: No, that auxiliary nurse on your street can't just become a consultant, neither can the Gateman in our teaching hospital. Except of course they go through residency and become consultant Gatemen and nurses.

Wait sef... Consultancy na beans?

I daresay it is ok....the problem now is chain of command issues.

But this should not be the real fight....the real fight is for 30% of the budget to go to health care....and for more teaching hospitals, for the transformation of teaching hospitals to public private systems....which leaves more money for Primary and Secondary health care....and increasing training places.

That is what NMA and JOHESU should be agitating for.

Modified: The real issue is that government may probably say that it cannot afford more salary increases....which is why 30% to health should be the main thing for now.

This is a catastrophe. It's really bad. The idea behind this decision is to remove the supposed monopoly that doctors enjoy but the problem with this decision is that the patients will suffer. Pls 4 those of u ignorant about what this means. It is quite simple. A consultant nurse will have have equal decision making in patients management as a consultant doctor in nigeria. Even this is not practiced in developed countries that Nigerians love emulating.

U people rejoicing now keep rejoicing till the first casualties start coming out. This decision has already claimed it's first casualty in UCH. I heard a paediatric surgeon operated on a patient and went home in order to return the next day for his ward round. When he returned the consultant nurse had done her ward round and had opened and inspected the operation wound. The operating doctors asked the nurses at their station to pls reopen the wound so that the consultant who by the way was the person that operated to inspect the wound himself but the nurses refused saying they had done their ward round and they won't open the wound again. The surgeons angrily left and refused to return cos of the way they were treated by the nurses. The child died from infection 4 days later. I don't wish anyone this on anyone but this information is from a reliable source.
In developed countries only doctors are called consultants cos they consult. Now other health care professions ourside medicine us other names to represent their consultants. This is so there would not be any confusion on who has the last say on patient matters. This decision is bad for the Nigerian healthcare system and u guys will see it with ur own eyes in the coming years unless they clearly state the limitations of the non medical consultants.

Good,
We will now have consultant pharmacist, and consultant pharmacy technician, consultant CHEW, consultant nurse assistant and endless list. Has anybody thought about definition of consultancy?. What is d implications in a confused populace where even the carpenter who works in the hospital is called a doctor!. How many of u will take your child to consultant nurse for surgery, it will noe begin to happen because our mothers in the village who understands little will be confused!. A consultant is a final advisor or authority! Then will have many final authorities in management of same patients. The consultant doctor gives orders to the nurse to use honey to treat his patient but consultant nurse is oga too, so she says no, and tells junior nurse to use eusol!, who suffers? The patient.
The doctor prescribes a drug for the patient he has been managing for years, and the pharmacist only dispense, but know they will want to change the drugs because they are now final authority in pharmacy without even knowing the details about the patient!!!!!! Who suffers?
When you put stupid people in gov. You get stupid circulars, and NIGERIANS suffer. Why consultants now? It is because of the specialist allowance not because they know better than the doctor.
While it takes the doctor 4-6 six extra years to become specialist, these allied health worker want to call themselves specialist after 6 months CME.
Abroad, there are no consultant nurses or pharmacist in the HOSPITALS, they only work in elderly homes where there are no permanent doctors. So they call them consultants when pharmacist are called to monitor drugs.
don't make conflicting points,if only they will agree to work together, then each of them will know about what their job entails, and the nurse will not go ahead to do d Job of a doctor neither will d pharmacist...
