Its all good sha.

But one thing is certain:

the title: Consultant as a Doctor is entirely different from the same title as a Nurse or Cleaner.

Nurses run shift in the hospital, doctors don't
If something goes wrong in management of a patient, they go for the doctor's head not the nurse
Doctors go through rigorous training, reading all the books in the world and are trained to know somethings about the other units in the health sector
Doctors spend 15hrs and more in a day on their feet while at work even at the detriment of their health and u see them collapsing at work
But yet every body wants more money but dont want the work

ANOTHER ARGUMENT BASED ON IGNORANCE
You guys don't know what we want and the agreement with govt you don't become a consultant base on union activities rather you become a consultant base on educational qualification
Abi my brother....but these are doctors posting na...they are learned...a consultant nurse will only be a consultant in her field, and not in d medical field,no sane person will consult a nurse for a surgery, cos that's not the job description of a nurse but a surgeons, but one can consult a nurse on services involving nursing, and so theirs will be different entirely from that of a medical doctor.. so why d vendetta?

Dis is of perfect timing. Understand dat we are all diff bodies in d health sector. No one will be infringing on d other as consultants. At least every health worker body can be a director and not assistant directors and also CMDs. We alws want to av hospitals like d developed countries but not recognizing others. Check out their consultations. D only same shd be d administrative part.

Pharmacists, if U want to cut out, no probs. I guess U'll just av ya own union. We aren't competing wt NMA's salary scale. But JOHESU's own was approved which led NMA into strike. And coz of dat d court overruled it, which is not fair. Our salary can't be same wt d drs but they must pay us wat they promised us.

If NMA goes on strike coz of dis, then they've made demselves selfish unreasonable children and confused professionals. Don't blame Jonathan, ask Onyebuchi aw far. He started dis madness. Even d drs knows he's cause.

Thank U FG. Long live GEJ!
Get yourself educated on the issues.

Salary and wages commission made some mistakes in CONMESS circular ( Doctor's salary scale), NMA agitated for correction which was 'rectified' but not captured in 2014 budget. FG sourced 2 months arrears and paid as a mark of 'commitment' to NMA that the money ( including arrears) will be paid in 2015, I cant remember NMA having any 'new salary scale' nor can I remember JOHESU raising observation concerning any mistake in existing CONHESS circular.

Not all health workers would be called consultants except those who have the necessary postgraduate qualifications as speltout by the various proffessional bodies. If any healthworker has met the nccessary requirement, which includes:Research, educational qualification i.e postgraduate, and work experience, they sure deserve it.Besides, these people have been enjoying these consultancy before the Onyebuchi act!

Easy access to internet is making even educated people becoming more stupi.d daily; PCN will not make a pharmacy technician with 3years education a consultant nor will NMCN make a graduate nurse without additional education and training a consultant nurse. Use your brain dude, not every physician in the county is a consultant and same won't go for others.
No regulatory body in nigeria assigns the title 'consultant' to anybody. Regulatory bodies ONLY licence an individual as a 'specialist' in a particular area, this qualify the person for 'appointment' as consultant by any hospital.

No. I believe a consultant nurse to be different from a matron. Eriko's definition of consultant nurse fits what they call nurse practitioner in Canada. You can become a nurse practitioner by taking a msc or PhD and specialize in a particular aspect of patient care. I don't think going for further studies makes one a matron in naija.

A consultant nurse is a nurse who after the completion of her nursing training has also completed masters and post doctoral studies and then has been widely published, I think up to 2-4 years research experience. This nurse is then accepted to be a consultant nurse if the hospital she is working in together with their nursing board decides she has enof experience to get that title. That is why they call them consultant nurses in the UK and other countries that use those. Believe me I know cos I work with many of them. I have even held some upgrade lectures for their nursing consultants a few times in the past.

I was attributing the chief matron status to matrons who have Bsc nursing, long years nursing experience with a masters or phd in nursing.

This is a catastrophe. It's really bad. The idea behind this decision is to remove the supposed monopoly that doctors enjoy but the problem with this decision is that the patients will suffer. Pls 4 those of u ignorant about what this means. It is quite simple. A consultant nurse will have have equal decision making in patients management as a consultant doctor in nigeria. Even this is not practiced in developed countries that Nigerians love emulating.

U people rejoicing now keep rejoicing till the first casualties start coming out. This decision has already claimed it's first casualty in UCH. I heard a paediatric surgeon operated on a patient and went home in order to return the next day for his ward round. When he returned the consultant nurse had done her ward round and had opened and inspected the operation wound. The operating doctors asked the nurses at their station to pls reopen the wound so that the consultant who by the way was the person that operated to inspect the wound himself but the nurses refused saying they had done their ward round and they won't open the wound again. The surgeons angrily left and refused to return cos of the way they were treated by the nurses. The child died from infection 4 days later. I don't wish anyone this on anyone but this information is from a reliable source.
In developed countries only doctors are called consultants cos they consult. Now other health care professions ourside medicine us other names to represent their consultants. This is so there would not be any confusion on who has the last say on patient matters. This decision is bad for the Nigerian healthcare system and u guys will see it with ur own eyes in the coming years unless they clearly state the limitations of the non medical consultants.

Mbok tell them. In Engineering, there's a reason we have a hierarchical structure with the Engineer at the top (thanks to his years of training as an engineer and a manager), followed by technicians/technologists, and craftsmen. Same ought to apply in a medical team where the doctor leads, thanks to years or rigorous training, followed by nurses who are basically like the military ' s NCOs and rank - and - file, with pharmacists and lab technicians playing support. But noooooo, the lower cadre via JOHESU want to be placed on equal footing with doctors. It's like rank-&-file soldiers and their NCOs (Sargent, etc) demanding that they be made equal to Academy trained Officers (Leutenants to Generals).

Funny country,Nigeria.... It's okay that this has finally been approved. I hope there will be peace now. What people fail to understand is that there will be massive confusion in the hospitals. We live in a country where everyone remotely related to the hospital is called a doctor without them making any attempt to correct such individuals. I can bet an arm and a leg that these consultant cleaners, nurses, lab scientists etc will never correct the confused patients. They will play on the ignorance of patients to claim doctors. It's all good though, that's what we want.

But wait oo,I hope the members of juhesu are willing to go through the process of becoming a consultant and not pushing the argument of "i've worked for 20years and so I should be a consultant". Even a doctor who has worked for 20years can't be a consultant without going through the process.

Our government sef. They just sign and approve things without doing proper research. I'm sure that the members of juhesu agitating for consultant status will not be kind enough to inform us that even though there are consultant nurses, they are not in hospitals but mostly used in legal cases and even though there are consultant pharmacists, they are only seen in aged people homes or private practice and not in government hospitals. But in Nigeria, they want to be in the clinics and compete with the doctors. I hope this cures their inferiority complex. It's okay sha,as far as everyone is happy...

It's election season. So I'm pretty sure the govt said that just to shut JOHESU up.

Cry me a river. Presently in Nigeria, there is nothing like chief matron again...wonder whether a male nurse will be called a matron too. Chief nursing officer is the designation and rank which is equivalent to chief medical officer, chief medical laboratory scientists and the rest but not equivalent to a consultant nurse.
With a basic degree all these professionals can reach this level but with additional qualifications from the regulating body the officer can be elevated to a consultant level.

A proud nurse representing..

He however said that JOHESU would be embarking on a fresh strike because doctors had been receiving new salary structure to the detriment of other health workers.

This is probably the craziest reason for anyone to go on strike.
