Cuba was fighting alongside Angolan troops as well as Russian military. Russia supplied Cuba with weapons as well as military support. Most of the pilots were Russians. SA, during then a small country, had nobody to supply with weapons. They started with almost zero arsenal but could protect its territory against invasion for over 20 years. I wonder if Nigeria could have survived that long without any direct outside support. That was extraordinary, even if the government of SA then was racist and abusive to human rights, what it has done is absolutely marvellous in nature. Of course, the rebels were launching offensive at us and we had to take cover. Binoculars were merely used to monitor the actions of their mortars because there is nothing on earth that irritates like a mortar when you will have to fire your rifle and concentrate on falling bombs at the same time. However, one thing that I was certain was that they couldn't approach us any closer since our cover was perfect.
