First Class And 2'1 Graduates: Come And Inspire Others by Nobody: 1:56pm On Nov 23, 2014 |
This thread is for prospective undergraduate students and those that are currently in schools. If there is one thing that I believe in life, it is that the success stories of others have a way of touching you and uplifting you. There is a certain admiration for people that have attained a certain height of success or excellence and that is why I am creating this post. I want all those nairalanders who were able to clinch the much revered First Class Honours and the respected Second Class Upper Division Honours to come and inspire others who need it. It is very simple. The aim is to post how you were able to attain your academic heights in school, the kind of friends you kept, your relationship with your books and your lecturers, your social life in school, your mentors, your difficulties and your happiest moments. These things will go a long way in inspiring others. They can learn from you, learn from your errors and advance themselves. Even those that have already graduated can also learn from these experiences. Those running their masters and PhD programmes can also contribute/learn from this thread. Let us make it a very lively and educative thread please. There is a sense of contentment when you are able to aid others in achieving their dreams. Trust me; I know this for sure. I tutored some students who turned out to be successful academically and till today that respect is imprinted in their psyches and I am happy for that. You can touch a life as well. If you excelled academically in school, come and tell others how you did it. . 8 Likes 3 Shares |

DickDastardly: If you fall into the category, all you need do is to tell us a story The story is of how you did it, the trying moments, the bad moments, the good ones, how life has been after you gained it, your life then in school, etc etc. As much as you can and tell us the story with the aim to inspire. 1 Like |

DickDastardly's 10 1st Class Commandments! (1) Stay away from bad biatches. Books and Booobs dont mix! (2) Watch the bad Hommies, they'd try to pull you into their hussle but dont let 'em cos you'e gat yo eyes on the prize! (3) Parties and clubbing are no nos cos you'd be wasting yo reading time! (4) Never join the back seat crew cos lecturers will always mark you and when exam comes, no matter what you write they'd still feel you aint worthy of it! (5) Take notes, expecially salient points like yo life depend on 'em. Most times the don spills his exam questions without knowing. (6) loading.......... 10 Likes 2 Shares |

Well.. As for me.. I had an upper division 2nd class degree...i knw if i had put in my best i wud have gotten a first class. So my first advice.. Put in ur utmost best so that at tge end of it all, you wud knw you tried your best ( to avoid d case of what i said in my second statement) I had lots of close friends who graduated with first class, but didn't read with them except in my final yr.. And u knw wat.. I had my highest GP in that yr (4.7). So second advice.. Its ok being Friends with scholars but its even better when you study with them. Plan your time, it's not about reading always.. There is time for everything... A time to study hard, a time to relax, time to play, time for your hobbies.. Plan your time well. Knw thyself (Socrates).. Knw your capabilities and your limits.. Becos d scholar in ur class reads all through d night non stop doesn't mean you shud too (cos ur body might not be able to take such work). Then very important.. Don't forget ur God for he maketh all things possible. Pray always, involve urself in spiritually uplifting activities and God will bless your hard work with success God bless you all 27 Likes 1 Share |

yorex2011: I love your addition to this post. I would love to repeat what you said again with emphasis because this is something that kills alot of students : yorex2011: Knw thyself (Socrates).. Knw your capabilities and your limits.. Becos d scholar in ur class reads all through d night non stop doesn't mean you shud too (cos ur body might not be able to take such work). Always study yourself and know how your body and brain works. If not you will end up reading and not understanding a single thing. 2 Likes 1 Share |

........contd (6) Get close to dons, it helps to make you stand out. Dont just be another faceless student to 'em. Ask smart questions in class and seek them out after class for further clarifications. That way they'd know you have a target and might aid you unknowingly! (7) Read, Re-read, Read again and Re-read even some more. With more practice comes perfection. ( This should have been number one, but nevertheless, keep very close to whatever you worship. It helps in maintaining your 360 life circle! (9) Compete healthily with best. It does wonders as it tends to bring out the best in you! (10) Avoid Student Unionism! You can easily be witch-hunted. It happened to me, though i wriggled outtavit! Bon Voyage to the pretigious Island of 1st Class! NB: 1st Class gurantees you nothing in life after school. It only stands you out while you have to still fight fairly to earn any living. Goodluck! 10 Likes 1 Share |

DickDastardly: @BOLDED: It is good that is emphasized. Getting a First or a 2'1 is not synonymous with success in any way. It is only fought for in other to be happy with yourself that you did your best and you can proudly tell others about it. It gives you contentment and boosts your chances in the real world but it is not a pandora's box that unlocks all that is good . |

Do not mix your academics with extracurricular activities. As an undergraduate, I was involved in acquisition of skills like learning how to code and project management. Some meetings I had to attend and projects I had to work on interfered with studying period and it had a massive declivity on my grades in my third year, I even had an F in a course I gambled in. My advice is to stay focused while school is on session but do not joke with your holidays. Summarily, your priority is to make a good grade out of school but 'naija' world goes beyond that now. Asides connection, you need to stay competitive and picking up as many relevant skills as possible is key. However, this should not have an adverse effect on your grades. MAXIMIZE YOUR HOLIDAYS. I am grateful for my 2-1 but I would have loved if I hit the 4 point mark, which I was nowhere close to. 12 Likes 1 Share |

First of all, eat very welllll before class/studies.- Pay attention closely to what your lecturer teaches-Read and study like you are going to give a lecture on the subject(s). By so doing, you will take charge. 5 Likes 1 Share |

Re: First Class And 2'1 Graduates: Come And Inspire Others by Nobody: 5:33pm On Nov 23, 2014 |
2'1 was possible because my first year and second year GPA were fairly comfortable, amounted to well over 3.5, don't get it wrong. After the third year, the nosedive in grades amounted to about cumulative GPA 3.2 or so. With mediocre grades in the fourth year, there was not much improvement. It was in my fifth year after IT that 'my eye con clear' and knowing this was the last chance, that I decided to give it all I had. I made an average of 4.2 in my final year in addition to the 'free' boost Industrial Training (SIWES) grades gave most of us then, I found my final GPA at 3.64. So, you need to see two clauses here: 1. Fairly good grades at the start 2. The boost the IT results gave 3. The self conviction I had to take when I knew having below 2'1 would affect my aspirations, post college. Computer science, Ife. Chiscomax: 4 Likes |

I am an ex student of the polytechnic ibadan bus admin to b precise and I graduated wit upper credit e.i 2.1.to achieve upper credit,2.1,distinction or first class is very easy, all wat u need is dedication and listen attentively to wat ever ur lecturer said in class, know the tactics of each lecturer cos it is very important and it will help u to know how to prepare for their courses.d most important part of ur time is when u get home each day always try to study wat ever u learn in skul and assimilate dem all cos piling of notes till two weeks to d exam, bliv me u will definitely crash by d time u are reading them, earlier preparation is very important cos am not a serious student in class but when I got home I studied very hard, in my hnd 1 first semester I had 4.05,second semester I had 3.83 and the two togeda I had CGPA of 3.94,in HND2, first semester I had 3.39 and second semester I had 3.62. U can surpass dis achievement of mine if u make judicious use of ur tym while in skul and get very closer to Allah. 7 Likes 1 Share |

DickDastardly:Ok Voss I didn't make a 1st class but I wasn't too far away from the mark. Sadly, I could say I almost ticked all the boxes in ur list. Personally I think the key is God's grace, moderation and understanding ur brain. Besides IMO, intelligence isn't measured by grades.. The grading system was formulated by a human afterall, it's time we started thinking outside the box. |

I would like to start by saying God is number one but aside dat u have d power to decide what you want to attain especially when it comes to things you can control. My story 1st yr - attended almost all social functions but was still on a 2.1, I had my first E in a 3 units 2nd yr- I decided I hadn't tapped into myself as I should have, but despite d realization I still managed to make my first F (in a course ) I know I did well in nd cos I rewrote it nd scored an A 3rd yr -5th yr I only recorded a total of 3cs nd nthin less I came out with a 2.1 but if I had set my goal from day one I probably would have made a first class... I wasn't much of an all nighter, but my evenings were in d library. I maintained a cordial rship with my lecturers and I had a few I went to, to ask questions ? Moral: make sure u r in d right dept, know what works for you in terms of or reading pattern, decide from d onset what you hope to achieve from your stay in d university and for those who tink its too late to come out well, still strive hard until u write ur last paper every .1 in ur cgpa makes a whole lot of difference. I had friends who were A list students and those who weren't doing as great cos u get inspired by d high fliers but also have to inspire odas Am out it doesn't end in a first class or a 2.1 pass thru d school nd make sure it passes thru u. distinguish yourself in your chosen field else you would get swallowed up by other first class/ 2.1 students 5 Likes 1 Share |

Mine was funny. I was doing fairly okay without even trying. Then once in 300L, I looked at my CGPA and asked myself "why not end this with a 2.1?" So I worked a little harder, and that was it. So it all starts with a desire to get better results. Desire it, and work towards it is all. 3 Likes |

I gained admission on MERIT to study the course I so much desire! Basically, if you have the background knowledge of the course you intend to study in Uni, you wount have much problem in your first year. Especially all the Introductory courses (101)! Again I found out that most peeps that gain admission based on Supplimentary List or given courses other than their choosen courses don't usually do well coz of lack of interest or Zeal. Secondly, to make a FIRST OR SECOND, you must READ, take important notes in class then make friends with people with Sharp Brains. Get a reading partner and strike a balance with your Book and other social activities. Back then in school, I participated actively in SUG and stuffs like that but wasn't carried away! My eyes was always on the GOAL to make a first class. Lastly, you MUST be LOYAL! Honestly, it pays to be LOYAL! I had a good relationship with my HOD and other lecturers so never had issues with missing scripts and victimization. I was also close to my Coursrep! So my dear, the Key point is Putting God first, Being Loyal, and making friends with people that share same aspiration as you. That's all! I thank God for Granting me my dream course! Gained admission on Merit, and had 4.23 on a scale of 5.0 it can only be God! 5 Likes 1 Share |

my only problem is mathematics. i find it difficult to understand it. and i'm studying Banking and finance. just wrote our first semester exam, now waiting for result. i dont want what happened to me during our exams, to repeat itself. any solution? it's depressing seeing people who you are better than academically, making fun of you indirectly, parading theirselves as mini- god because you are not good in mathematics |
