The Phrase, "Children are gifts from God" is one commonly used in Nigeria (& I guess in other parts of the world as well) & this has resulted in a lot of abuse of Children rights by parents but the truth is that Children are not gifts...whether from God or from the devil, or any other source . Children are a product of Sexual relations (or artificial insemination) between Male & Female HUMANS.

Everyday, Parents go to Church, or Mosque or wherever they worship, to thank their God for the "Gifts of Children" (among their many other blessings), and to dedicate the Child to their God (the Child has no say in such matters).

It is very common in rural (and some urban) homes, to see a father or mother beating up a child with a heavy stick or or koboko, or subjecting the child to one form of excruciating punishment or another (if you've ever been starved cos you did something wrong, you'll know what I'm talking about). And if you question the behaviour of these parents, you're likely to get a response like "Na my pikin, I can do with him as I like"

In some other homes, the Parents decide exactly what the child will become in life; the school the child attends; the course they want the child to study & profession, the child's religion (God help you if your parents are Christians & you decide to be Muslim, or Vice Versa), and even the Person you Marry,
irrespective of what the 'child' really wants.

All these constitute "abuses" against children. Of course, every parent has the right to discipline an erring child WITHIN REASONABLE LIMITS, & to counsel a child about his/her future, but the practise of taking out a Parents failure and frustrations in life on a poor child is simply not acceptable.

In Part 2 of this topic, we'll discuss how sensible (or otherwise) the notion of Children being "Gifts from a benevolent God" is, when there're lots of unwanted pregnancies being aborted daily, and those born are abandoned, while some Married couples have been looking for children for years...but that's another discussion.

For now, we should realise that EVERY CHILD has a right to Life, Right to grow up in a loving home, right to live free of fear of torture, Right to sound Education, Right to good food, water and health care, etc

Children are "People"; Children's rights are Human rights.

Children are NOT "Gifts" from God, or anybody!!!

You are wrong but i don't have time to explain why i say you are wrong but let me tell you those things you call abuse is not actually abuse, so they have all this rights?
we should realise that EVERY CHILD has a right to Life, Right to grow up in a loving home, right to live free of fear of torture, Right to sound Education, Right to good food, water and health care
So children have all this rights? but trying to lead them to the right direction is abuse from parents or do you expect them to have all of the above from Government?
Coming to the issue that children is not a gift from God you are also 100% wrong but as i said am a busy person, let others continue.

Children are precious gift from God. There are so many couples that have sex as often as possible for many years yet no kids. Will you say they don't know how to have sex? Will you say their sex style is not right? Which ever way the children come from ie legally or illegally, they are precious gift from God. Even if u're not a xtian, pls get a bible and read what God said concerning kids in psalm 127 v 3-5, 128 v 3b. Training a child depends on the parents, what i will scold a child for is what another parent will ignore while another one deal mercilessly with such child. The ways in which we train our children are quite different a lot. Train up a child in the way he should go and when he grows up he wont depart from it. Kids are gift u mold, nurture, cherish and break if need be.
