Is It Wrong To Drive Automatic Transmissions With Both Legs? by chimah3(m): 10:21pm On Nov 29, 2014
Was having an argument with some friends and family and they all said I was wrong for driving Automatic transmissions with both legs. I actually feel more confident and comfortable on the road using both legs.

Infact to be honest I don't know how to use one foot.

Please guys let me hear your thoughts on this, reasons and all...thanks!

Sure many would learn from this too!

Most atimes in driving you have a reflex actions. One leg is the best because once you remove your leg from the gas pedal you are stepping on the brake. I cant imagine you are pressing on the gas pedal and at the same time pressing on the brake.

How many kind of emergency situation does one have in driving?

Try hitting the accelerator and brakes at same time and see what will happen on speed

Very very wrong. If u try that in a driving test they will never give u a drivers license until u learn how to drive with one foot. But then Nigeria is a country where everything goes, u can always get ur license through the back door without any driving test.

I personally can not do it as I don't have the coordination. It seems silly to me.

I drive with both legs dts wat I am most comfortable with. My reaction to emergency is faster with both legs though top drivin schs recommend one leg but dt doesn't do it for me. Wat matters is wat guarantees safety n wat one is most comfortable in cool. My two legs must b put to use n I ve so mastered it dt it comes naturally for me.
Pls don't try to b like me ooo bc u may nt live to tell d story undecided

Drivin auto with both legs is for few ppl who r usually d exception to d rule tongue

Its jst lik d habit of removin my footwear b4 drivin, I can't drive well with my shoes on or any footwear it must b first removed angry u see nw there is no right or wrong abt some things. Its abt wat one feel comfortable n safe in while driving. D ultimate aim of drivin is to get to ur destination safely, wateva guarantees this is okay

I have been told once by someone that only racing drivers do and are required to drive automatics with both legs.

Personally, i drive automatic with the right leg only and as usual drive manual with both legs.

I believe it is bad for a street driver to drive an automatic with two legs especially if the driver drives a manual occassionally. This is because the manual trains your left leg to depress the clutch fully and when you use that leg on the brake pedal, that will spell disaster. It will take considerable amount of time to adjust between Manual and Automatic leading to very bad driving on both vehicles during the transition period. The manual driver using left foot on brakes on the automatic will find himself either braking too hard or too soft both could cause accidents. It is also bad for the transmission, brake systems.

The convincing question is if a driver uses left leg on brakes with automatic, which leg will he use on brakes with the manual drive because it is actually impossible to drive manual, braking and clutching with the same leg which in most is simultaneous.

My suspicion is that this op may not know how to drive a manual.

Look at it this way, it is standard to drive a manual with left leg on clutch pedal and right leg for gas and brake pedals. The legs and brain are trained in that process. So if you go to automatic where only the clutche pedal is missing, you just can leave your left leg hanging while the right leg continue the function it was trained to usually do. If you change, the training in the brain changes so it will be a new learning process since the left leg is now braking (a different function).

In the same vein, my aunt and my mother had to go to the village one night with my mum's auto car but my mum doesnt drive in the night and my aunt does but drives a manual. It was seriously awful as my aunt insisted she must use left leg on the brakes. The result was acceleration and braking at the same time. It took ages before she could manouver out of the parking lot and out of the compound.

Adanny, your analysis is spot-on, you nailed it bang on the beam.

There is a reason worldwide, there is a global standard when it comes to what feet are used on the pedals of an automatic and manual vehicle. Any individual braking with the left foot in either an automatic or manual transmission-equipped vehicle WILL fail their driving test, the only exceptions are vehicles specially adapted for the physically challenged. There are NO other exceptions.

Those that say they can NOT use their right feet to brake are simply poor drivers. If a driver does left foot braking in a street car, has an accident, and it later transpires the driver brakes with the left foot, their insurance will NOT pay out, as as far as they're concerned the accident could MOST LIKELY have been avoided. Again, the exception would be an underlying physical condition, and the insured would have had to declare this when the policy was taken out.

You would struggle to get insurance cover if you declared you were a left foot braker in a street car, and there's a reason for this.

U guys r correct I learnt to drive wit automatic gear neva driven a manual gear before n dnt want to b associated with d stress of clutch control n changing gear manually wink

May b dts y driving auto with two legs is sooo perfect to me. My left leg dnt kw abt clutch (infact it has never been used to clutch) all it kws is brake n my right leg kws gas pedal grin.

Though sometimes esp on freeway I use one leg as I dnt apply brake often but in city drivin na d two legs dey work best

@op...u will only be justified if
1. u dont drive manual at all
2. u learnt driving with auto tnx on both legs nt knowing d implication
3. if both pedals wen applied simultaneously can read ur mind.

Hello All,
I drive my automatic rav4 with both feet.
It's a choice.
I drove manuals for upwards of 15 years before changing to automatic.
I find that it gives me more balance breaking with my left foot.
Preference!!!

When I first started driving automatics, I was using both legs until my brother inlaw told me to only use one leg and I got used to it under five minutes, the adverse effect in using two legs is sharp breaking which is bad for the car at the back.
Depressing the brake and accelerator together only revs the car, I don't know any other cons. But depressing both on speed, then you are ON YOUR OWN.

'Sharp breaking'...very true! Happens a lot! Tbh I think that's the only con I can place in using. Both legs...cus I get to change the break pads very often!

yes there are

but in our driving we there is what we call bad habits which make fail if your were to go for re -test

as for you that bad habit is what your were taught from the learning period and it has became (yo normal driving) which is wrong from any government approved driving instructor

that technique is mainly used in racing cars as way just reduce speed (this is not stopping) and keeping the left leg on the gas to keep the revs high for the turbo

You've been answered. You need to watch the youtube videos above if you didnt and hear for yourself the curses rained on left foot brakers. I didnt even mention the fact that they are very annoying to follow behind.

Did you watch the videos posted by ZIMDRILL? You need to.

Left foot brakers are likely to have their brake lights on involuntarily causing problems to other motorist. The brake light switch level on the brake pedal is always before the actual brake application level. The idle left leg resting on the pedal in most cases trigger the brake lights even when accelerating but sending a wrong signal to cars following behind which will brake thinking you are braking.

Imagine the effect of a car ahead with 100 cars behind it. Whenever the second car sees the brake lights of the car ahead, he will brake too. Same applies to the next car and the next, down to the 100th car. Imagine that all those braking was a false alert and repeated almost constantly without you the ahead driver knowing the distress of your actions to other motorist. Its just insensitivity on your part not to be nice to other motorist even when you have not flaunted an obvious road traffic regulation.

No one says, you are barred from it (in Nigeria atleast) or that you are not good at it. You will never know how bad you are since the resulting problems will be behind you. Some people are bad brakers but the left foot brakers are even worst and can be spotted from a mile away.

Left foot braking is as bad as putting on left turn signal but physically turning right.
