Cargo operations to remain shut for non-compliance –FG The Federal Government has said that operations at the cargo terminals of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos will remain shut until operators comply with the new procedure. The Customs Area Comptroller, MMIA, Mr. Taju Olarenwaju, told journalists in Lagos on Monday. He said the clearing agents had threatened national security and efforts to collect revenue for the government, adding that such would no longer be tolerated. He explained that previous agreements signed with the agents in the past had failed as they had consistently violated rules of engagement and procedures at the cargo terminal, which restricted access to some parts of the terminal. He said, “Terminal operators and clearing agents are taking our efforts for granted. It has become increasingly insecure to carry out business at the cargo section of the airport because of the activities of agents who through their collective actions continue to threaten national security. “They have shown that they are economic saboteurs and terrorists who threaten the security of the airport. The Nigeria Customs Service will not fold its arms and allow this. We will be alive to our responsibility and not allow terminal operators to carry out this illegality.” He explained that the clearing agents had continued to display a lack of capacity to enforce the new regulations in sensitive areas where cargo was kept at the airport. “The warehouse remains shut until the agents and terminal managers show capacity to operate without a threat to security,” he stated. Olanrewaju says goods that fall into the specialised category such as perishable; medical and diplomatic items will be isolated for facilitation, such that the importers do not suffer from the infraction caused by clearing agents, who are not ready to comply with operational procedures . Any update today? This one you posted here was as at 23rd November 2014 and what are the agents doing about reversing this issue? I think the agents just need to humble themselves and beg for forgiveness. many people are hoping on collection of goods early enough before the Christmas break and now this. We should all come to a compromise in this country and stop the use of unnecessary power show. This might really be my last importing I'm just FED up with this trash called a country |

bigtt76:And when we talk. some morons somewhere would tell you that you speak because you hate a particular person. Can we quantify the amount lost to these senseless close of activities. ? Can you imagine a single simpleton closing down the cargo aspect of a whole nation? What happened to allowing business run while enforcing whatever thrash or reform you want to implement? If truly the new reforms were favorable, the agents won't wait till now before accepting the terms. It just confirms the fact that Nigeria is a useless country to do business in. And just to think that's the only functional cargo airport in the country. We are indeed in the 15th century. 4 Likes |

Re: . by Nobody: 10:10am On Nov 29, 2014 |
This is annoying. If we write a strong worded letter and have everyone sign it and we address it to the president, Cc: National Assembly, Minister of Finance, Senate President, Cg Customs, all media outlets and create a media fireball online probably the president and the CG of customs might take action. They only respond to the wrath of Social Media. We would ask the president to prove to us that he deserves our votes again and also since olarenwaju as indicated interest in protecting our national security, as his employers we should honour his request and transfer him to borno state where he can be of more help in protecting our national security and stopping the flow of illegal arms into the country...just wondering...any thoughts? 1 Like |

onegig: Dear Valued Customer, This is to inform you that the strike has been called off in Nigeria, but clearing has not yet commence due to the fact that the customs are demanding a whole lot of money on demurrage from the Agents. We are told that the clearing Agent and the customs are meeting today as soon as this issue is resolved clearing will commence. Please note, there might be a delay in clearing due to the back-log. Attached are the pictures of how the terminal looks like because of the strike. We appreciate your patience on this matter and we promise that as soon as the whole issue is been resolved, we will try and hasten the clearing as possible. Best regards, The Team at Midas Express Shipping & Freight, |
