You are probably having osteoarthritis of the spine made worse by your sitting position at work. Treating back pain is a combination of different therapies including knowing how to sit properly,exercises for your back,massage,painkillers and supplements. Hi there, sorry about your predicament. From your post, it seems you live a sedentary lifestyle, I'm not going to tell you to quit your job but I'll offer some solutions to help you feel better and thrive while being sedentary First you have to wake up an hour earlier than your normal wake up time, there are ways around this, you either go to bed earlier or you just condition your mind to deal with it because nothing good comes easy. When you wake up, exercise for at least 30 minutes. Start with 15 minutes of cardio then finish off with 15 minutes of upper and lower bilateral strength training exercises. As you progress and your body starts to heal and rid itself of the pain, you can throw in some crunches every now and then. Second, in addition to the exercises you need to change up your daily intake to include natural vitamins and minerals commonly found in fruits and vegetables, also drink lots of water. This will revitalize your cells to begin rebuilding broken down tissue and bones, your body desperately needs this now. Third, you need to consult a chiropractor right away to show you the right exercises and intensity to accommodate your pain before you start. I also experienced chronic lower back pains a couple of years back. I visited several hospitals and took different medications some of them with terrible side effects yet to not avail. My life was then in disarray. At a time I could not even carry a bucket of water without limping with pain. Mind you, I've always exercised regularly and the pain was not because of adding weight. Today, I'm completely free from the pain. This happened not because of the hospitals or pills but changes that I made in my lifestyle. These include: 1. Drastically reduced the amount of time I spent on traffic. I used to spend on the average 4-5hrs (1.5hrs going and 2.5hrs returning) everyday driving to work. I moved to a place closer to my office and now spend maximum 1 hr/day (30mins going and 30mins returning). I think this was the turning point to my self healing. 2. Started using orthopedic bed and always sleep face up 3. Manage the time I spent sitting in one position at the office. Once I reduced the time driving on traffic, the pain gradually left and overtime I hardly experience the pain anymore. I wish you quick recovery as you battle this terrible condition. 4 Likes |

So so happy with the responses I'm receiving on here. I'm also encouraged that there are people who once had my situation and are free today. I've often been told about exercises and @xcelsia, you know exactly how it is, especially with getting up early and doing exercises that may result in more pains.. i appreciate u and all others. I'm going to combine many or all of the suggestions I've been given here and would definitely give u guys updates. So proud of you all. Now if you notice, I said to start crunches as you get better and your pain reduces. Your mid section is the painful area you presented with so we need to carefully ease into that area while first allowing your body heal. Now all these can't work without a change in your daily intake, I'm not asking you to stop eating carbohydrates and fats, I'm just asking you to tweak it a little bit to include more of fruits/vegetables/water Impossible is nothing, you can do this!! SoEndowed: One thing you should know, is that you're likely to deal with it forever. It may come and go, but will always return if you go through stress etc. Taking diclofenac is good, until you begin to enjoy the relief it gives you and abuse it, then you have an ulcer to deal with in addition to your back pain. Calcium, MSM, amino acids are helpful too, but these are supplements and you still need to get professional care. What you need may be a simple skeletal muscle relaxant, but you won't know until you visit a doctor who's skilled in orthopedics. Get yourself referred to see a proper orthopedic surgeon at Igbobi, or the orthopedic department of whatever tertiary institution is close to you. This is because it may have a serious cause that needs to be dealt with, instead of just taking care of the pain. The most useful advice so far is the exercise and lifestyle modification, because it helps, but you have to keep at it for a while before there's a significant difference. future001: Don't bend your back, bend your knees. Do your best to sit upright always. Every hour, take a five minute break and stretch, walk around. Orthopedic mattresses are fairly expensive and uncomfortable to sleep on at first, but please try and get one. You won't be sorry. I hope this helps. 1 Like |

I'm so grateful for your advice and even though it may seem difficult to achieve becos of my sedentary(?) lifestyle, I want to give it all I can to have a relief, then total cure. God bless you all for your great efforts. Just an update: Someone had suggested I do a particular exercise yesterday when d pain was so severe and there was this burning sensation at my lower back. The suggestion was to roll my waist and hips clockwise for 20 times, then roll it again counter-clockwise 20 times or more as the pain may permit. I took off time from my desk, went to a quiet place in my office and did exactly that, and even included jogging and stretching. To my amazement, the pains eased and the burning feeling stopped. Throughout the day, I was as happy as a butterfly. Elated by the result, I got home in the evening and repeated it but wait for this - i could not sleep well as the pains became aggravated. I'm so sore now and scared to do any such exercises. From yesterday, I have started on xcelsia's advice on fruits, and lots of water. I hope to provide you guys updates on my progress. SoEndowed: May I suggest walking briskly in chest-deep water across the shallow end of a swimming pool, if there is one nearby. Of course if you can swim, that is in fact the ULTIMATE exercise to make ALL body pain a thing of the past. A few leisurely laps in the pool a couple of times a week will banish or greatly reduce all symptoms associated with sedentary desk job careers, including aches and pains in the back, and constipation. If you never had the opportunity to learn how to swim in your youth, walking across the shallow end of a pool at chest-deep level, vigorously, will make you feel lighter on your feet, and years younger, while protecting your knees and ankles by reducing the effects of gravity and impact shocks on the ground, which are the primary reasons that jogging can be such a destructive exercise for anyone over the age of 30. Swim or wade your troubles away, brother man. The water is your friend, but keep to the shallow end if your swimming skills are not up to par. 1 Like |

These pains are my reward for these long years of desk work life with no muscle flexibility. I'm thankful for your advice. |
