AugustineAgain:that's very true. South Africa cannot boast of full self sufficiency on military equipment when her most valuable military assets are still controlled to a great degree by European condition of sales policies. |

overhypedsteve: Any war in Africa would be a ground war, and the Army is allmost 99% domestic Conditions of sale dont apply to Grips or Subs or Frigates, they tend to apply to items which allow for force projection (such as LHD's) or to items gained from state-to-state sales and not company-to-state deals. If Germany as a country or Sweden as a country sold them to us, they would likely be subject to conditions of sale. Finally, we specifically buy from countries like Germany and Sweden as they are generally neutral in terms of global policy making. We can do as we please with our assets. 1 Like |

overhypedsteve: Define "most valuable". And then tell us how far Nigeria is from "self-suffiency". South Africa boasts of military equipment exports, regardless. What does Nigeria boast of? Major purchases as shown in this thread? |

DieVluit: All the weapons South Africa depends on to win war are imported from your white masters in Europe : 1. Gripen Jets 2. Hawk Jets 3. Rooivalk Combat Helicopter engines, it's cannon and rockets 4. Oryx Helicopter is Puma Helicopter 5. Hercules C-130 transports 6. Oerlikon anti-aircraft guns 7. Starstreak anti-aircraft missiles 8. Olifant tank is Centurion tank 9. Valour Frigate warships 10. Heroine Submarines 11. Torpedoes 12. Exocet anti-ship missiles 13. ...And many more !! Remove all these European made heavy weapons from South Africa and watch Ghana defeat South Africa in war ! . |

MikeCZAR: JF-17 Thunder Block I is equal to Gripen C/D of SAAF JF-17 Thunder Block II is superior to Gripen C/D Gripen jet of South Africa is the old 1997 version with old and out-dated radar, there is a new modern version of Gripen jet in the world market but South Africa cannot afford it, the Gripen NG that Brazil is buying. The technology on SAAF Gripens are almost 20 year old, NAF JF-17 Thunder is carrying current year 2014 technology. NAF with 40 units of JF-17 Thunder + 11 F-7NI has unquestionable air superiority over SAAF. Nigeria will soon be roasting South Africa @LaBelle my SA ba.by girl, run to me for protection, Pretoria is gonna be invaded, come hide in my b.e.droom for 'safety' under my 'protection'.....do you like twins? agaugust: You have not dealt with my simple request. DieVluit: Once you have done that, show us how much self-sufficiency Nigeria has and compare that to South Africa. Once that is done, list Nigerian exports and compare those to South African exports. |

agaugust: Junk FIghter 17 Block 1 and 2 are inferior to the Gripen Also, what is the difference between Gripen C/D and SAAF Gripen C/D? even the people of pakistan say that the JF-17 is obsolete, and China has confirmed it by chosing the J-10 over the JF-17 only the planned block 3 will be a match for the Gripen C/D. Enjoy your poor mans F-16 And, btw, where is your uniform and gun? |

patches689: Shout Afrikaa flies 8 Gripens and ice frost froze 18 Gripen jets all old C/D versions with now obsolete radar, that's why Brazil refused to buy your outdated versions with outdated radar and avionics of almost 20 year old technology. Brazil is buying Gripen NG.....New Generation....NG version that South Africa CANNOT afford NAF is buying 40 devastating units of devastating JF-17 Thunder with latest state of the art year 2014 technology. Do I need to remind you that we are no longer on page 1 of this thread ? Nigeria is intelligently and systematically building the second biggest and second most powerful air force in Africa, second only to Egypt. We gonna dwarf every other country on this continent and Egypt itself has to be very careful as Nigerian military power grows wild like an angry Lion. China is buying J-10 because they build it, Pakistan is not buying J-10 because they build their own JF-17, makes a lot of sense. JF-17 is being used to replace F-16 and built to match the best F-16 jet in this world. JF-17 is built to challenge Indian Su-30 MKI, not to beat the flanker but to challenge it and keep India away from Pakistan. Pakistan may get the J-31 stealth jets to beat Indian Su-30 MKI, and in future Nigeria may follow Pakistan and NAF could buy a few J-31 stealth jets to keep up our equalization and matching with Pakistan since we train together for combat. JF-17 has waiting customers including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Venezuela, Sudan, Libya, Iraq, Argentina, etc. Nigeria is gonna test JF-17 in real combat and the world will come rushing for it and NAF will train them ! Nigeria is also asking for full technology transfer of JF-17 Thunder and we want to be the second manufacturing centre for the world, we will become Africa's first nation to manufacture a 4th generation jet fighter on Afro-Soil. Reason why the whole of Pretoria is Butt-Hurt and there may be plenty of suicides because of this....SA Police on red alert watching out for suicides . |

All flying activities of the South African Air Force's (SAAF's) fleet of Agusta A109 Light Utility Helicopters (LUH) have ceased and, in effect, the fleet is subject to yet another grounding. Despite the type being required by the SAAF to take pressure off the Oryx medium utility fleet, it has never lived up to expectations and the fleet has been the subject of groundings numerous times. The most recent grounding followed a March 2013 crash when an A109 on aerial patrol in the Kruger National Park flew into ground, killing all five on board. As a result, the course converting existing helicopter pilots to the A109 was temporarily stopped, pending the investigation. After some months of inactivity, the severe budgetary constraints affecting the SAAF resulted in a shortage of funds to keep the A109 fleet flying, only returning to flying status in November that year. Now, it appears that the surviving 26 airframes, operated by three squadrons and an advanced flying school, have been grounded once again since late October. The reason therefore is unclear, with both the SAAF and the SANDF not responding to requests for information. Whilst lack of funds is once again being cited by sources as a cause, even more ominous is that another reason being bandied about for the grounding is poor record keeping. It is alleged that the individual responsible for keeping the technical log-books up to date has resigned, leaving the status of the books in a shambles. READ MORE Feature: Operationally stretched SAAF flying fewer hours A109 LUH conversion course resumes South African Air Force SAAF It will take the Air Force some time to sort out and ensure that the logbooks are up-to-date and accurate, resulting in the fleet being grounded. This has affected 15 Squadron (Durban), 17 Squadron (Zwartkop), 19 Squadron (Hoedspruit) and 87 Helicopter Flying School (Bloemfontein). The A109 ground simulator is being used so that the pilots can maintain their proficiency, particularly when it comes to instrument flying. The A109 has been the black sheep of SAAF's helicopter fleet, never living up to expectations. Deemed too complex to convert newly qualified pilots onto helicopters, it has also been reported that the helicopter can neither carry operational loads in high heat conditions nor fly in strong wind. According to the SAAF, typical missions for the A109 includes training, search and rescue, rope extraction & rappelling, trooping, medical evacuation (casevac), cargo transport, border patrol, peacekeeping, communications and urban operations. The A109 LUH was purchased to replace the elderly Alouette III helicopter which had been in service since 1962 in the light utility role. Delivery of the 30 A109 helicopters purchased from the Anglo-Italian AgustaWestland helicopter company under Project Flange commenced in 2005 and has been beset with difficulties and delays. Four airframes have been written-off in crashes, some of which resulted in a temporary fleet grounding until the cause of the crash was determined. An option for a further ten aircraft was not exercised. 1 Like |

mzilakazi: Almost 300 SANDF with heavy loads of modern DENEL made brand new weapons could NOT hold 1,500 Seleka farmer rebels that had old ancient second hand weapons purchased from black market, South African army ran away from the battlefield of Bangui after about 15 hours of combat.....maybe holding your enemy to a stand still is achieved by running to the airport and catching the next available flight to Pretoria, yes South Africa's enemy has to stand still because SANDF soldiers have all run away, Seleka stands still....no more South African army available to fight with.....Game over....stand still . |
