Lagos State Government officials are led by the Deputy Governor, Alhaja Lateefat Okunnu (now Justice Okunnu).

Dr Mandela was presented with the national honour of Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR) at this event. He also spoke at the University of Lagos and visited the Centre for Black and African Art and Culture (CBAAC) to pick up several international awards that he had earned while he was in prison.
