hi, please i intend to apply for a NIV again this December to visit my best friend and his family for the Xmas holiday. to last for a week with them before i return back work. now this is my predicament, i ve applied in 2010 but was denied based on the fact that my uncle inviting me left Nigeria some years back with a visit visa but getting there i think he met his present wife n didn't come back. the next time i applied was January this year to visit my best friend and his family but was also denied again. now my question is this, is could there be another reason why i would be denied at this other time, because on the letter given, wasn't stated while i was denied. if its based on tie to return back to Nigeria, i do have all reasons, i have a very good job that pays me about 180k monthly, am married with a child which my wife also works, i have traveled to several European countries in the past 5 years on official and vacation reasons without staying an extra day in any of these countries. now i only wish to visit my best friend who is a marine for the Christmas holiday and i am a bit scared to be denied again. would have appreciated it if reasons for denial are expressed to applicants so we would know the reason and as well know if we re still eligible to apply at a particular time because i know how short interviews are and all. please i will just appreciate your kind gesture to reply this even though i know there is a little of information you can put up here. thank you once again.

This i took and moved to South Africa in 2009 without my girl child and wife because i needed to settle in first.

The company secured my work permit after i arrived in South Africa and after having saved much i decided to immigrate my wife and daughter which became positive. After my family had joined me we then started travelling, went to Malaysia in 2013 and then to the UK as well and then in 2013 applied for a US visa for the 2013 december holiday but to my dismay were refused and reason as hinted by the VO that interviewed me "he doubts me as i have not mentioned to have been refused visa in 2002" this was actually an honest mistake as time and event had taken over my memory and then later applied again with my family in early 2014 to celebrate our wedding anniversary and again refused.
This has left me confused because i have an even coming up in Las vegas in 2015 and planned to apply early 2015 but am scared as i do not know what has been written against my name and afraid might be refused again as am applying alone now.

Please advice. I appreciate you.

We cannot comment on specific cases on this forum. You are welcome to reapply for a visa, and to come in for interview and explain your purpose of travel, ties to Nigeria, etc. Generally when most applicants are refused a visa, they are refused under Section 214(b) of our law. This law has many components, but pertains to a person's claimed purpose of travel, as well as their ties (social, economic, etc) to their home country. We do not provide detailed explanations of a decision, but will always inform the applicant of the section of the law under which they are not eligible at the time of refusal.

We cannot comment on specific cases, however, ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS complete your DS-160 application form accurately. This includes whether or not you've applied for past visas. If you do not fill out your application form correctly, it could be construed as trying to conceal some material fact or mal intent. However, you are welcome to reapply (at least 90 days after your last interview). If you do, complete your form ACCURATELY, and explain this in the visa interview.

You can tell the officer whatever you feel is what helped you to make your decision. We cannot comment further than that.

I was issued 2 years B1-B2 Visa in Abuja around March 2014, i left Nigeria to attend a conference Austin TX, i paid $370 and i was send an Invitation letter via PDF which i downloaded, but before i left MM Airport in Nigeria i was given a boarding pass from Nigeria to Qatar but unfortunately i wasn't give from Qatar to TX. I had 9 hours stopped over, about to board in i was on the Queue to get a boarding pass an America Airline representative stopped and asked for my boarding pass but i can't provide one. He then ask for my invitation letter, ID card, Ticket and he collected my passport, he was typing on his phone and took pictures of all my document, he then said i can no longer travel with this Visa that i will be sent back to Nigeria, i asked him what have i done, he said the visa is no longer valid but the visa will expire in March 21 2016. I was confused, on getting to Nigeria i went to Abuja Embassy the following Monday to explain myself, an officer who attended to me stamped cancelled on my Visa that i can no longer use it and she said I could reapply if i want. Could you please advise if i can apply through DHL DROP BOX or i should go to the Embassy in person once again. Thanks

We don't comment on the individual "chances" of a visa application. As mentioned before, all applicants have to overcome 214(b), and show their ties to their home country are stronger than their ties to the US. Obviously, an American citizen spouse is usually seen as a pretty strong tie to the US, especially if that spouse is living in the US.

This has been mentioned before, but we generally don't base our decisions on documentation, especially for travel purposes such as what you're describing. So, forwarding a letter to us vs. not forwarding a letter to us will probably make no difference in the outcome of the case, especially if the applicant is applying for a B1/B2.

There are two ways visas can be cancelled. If the stamp on the visa reads "cancelled without prejudice", that is a routine cancellation, and generally does not preclude using the drop box renewal program. If the visa simply reads "cancelled", that generally means the visa was revoked. Revoked visas don't qualify for the drop box renewal program.

Incidentally, when a visa is revoked, we try to contact the visa holder via the contact information they list on their DS-160 so they know it has been revoked - that way, the very situation you're describing is less likely to happen. One more reason to make sure all the information you list on your DS-160 is correct.

You are correct that travel for medical purposes is one included as a use of B1/B2. There's no requirement that B1/B2 visa holders email us to inform that they are going to use their B1/B2 for medical purposes, though many choose to do so. (Looking through those messages, it appears in general the emails are largely questions like "can I use my B1/B2 for medical purposes", similiar to your question.)

In response to those questions, we do point out (and I'll reiterate the same point here) that a visa is just permission to go to the US and ask a Customs and Border Protection officer (CBP - the folks checking passports at the airport) for clearance to enter the country. If you are seeking to use your B1/B2 for medical purposes, the same guidelines we require to issue a visa for a medical purpose remain in effect when CBP is deciding if they will let you in. (For reference, here's the guidelines: http://photos.state.gov/libraries/nigeria/487468/pdfs/MedicalVisaInformation.pdf ). So it's important that you have that documentation ready to show a CBP officer once you get off the plane.

I hope that answers your question. Usually what gets people in trouble isn't using the B1/B2 for a conference, and then a year later using the same visa for a medical procedure. It's when people say they are going to use the B1/B2 for a conference, but when they show up at the border a few weeks later there's no mention of a conference and instead they're seeking a medical procedure - at that point it's usually clear some sort of deception has occured.

Hello VO. Please I would like to find out if a mother and daughter can apply for b1/b2 visa together. Will both the mother and daugher be present for the interview. Will they pay seperate visa appointment fees? The mother has been to the UK 4 times In the past 6 years but now wants to visit the US with her daughter on vacation. Hello VO... good afternoon. I was supposed to go for the OilComm Conference in Texas so I went for interview on the 21st of October 2014. I was surprised when the person that was supposed to interview didn't do what he was supposed to do and just refused me without no explanations or questions. The only question asked was my ID which I gave him and that was all. I was a bit confused but just got to comply. Why do you think I was refused even when my intentions of going for a conference was very clear?

Also, I will be going for visitation next year with my wife and kids... what chances do I have and what will be the requirement for a family visa? Although I've traveled to South Africa before but as a single man and not with family. I will like to know how to fill forms and what will be the documents that will be attached with my kids passport since they are just 3 and 2 years respectively.
