Gottoboy,the judging criteria in rap tournaments is so much different from that in Poetry tournaments. Did you notice that only one of the poems that made it to 2nd round had rhymes in it?

There are 15+ devices,and rhyme is just one. If rhyme is the only visible device in your poem,and other people who didn't even rhyme are mixing 7 devices well,with a perfect structuring,they beat you.

That's where the difference is between rap poetry and poetry. Rap poetry puts so much emphasis on rhymes,while in poetry,only in a few styles is rhyming compulsory. For example,the sonnet. And even in the sonnet,near rhymes are okay.

Now,the problem is that most modern poets have shifted to writing free verse,where rhyme or rythm isn't compulsory or even expected,the art of rhyming in poetry is gradually fading out.

Personally,rhyming is something I'd like for to be revived,and that's why I love to see you guys rap. You guys are doing a great job with the rhymes.
