CRITERIA AND PROCESS OF SELECTION OF AWARD WINNERS The NYSC President's Honours Award is a major programme in the annual calendar of events of the National Youth Service Corps. It was instituted in 1974 to recognize and reward excellence in behaviour and performance amongst the corps members. The tradition was maintained until 1998 when the event was suspended due to logistic reasons but revived in 2005. The award winners usually emerge from a rigorous selection process carefully carried out by a National Selection Committee. The members are drawn from relevant Institutions and Agencies such as the Presidency, Federal Ministry of Youth Development, the Nigerian Army, the Nigerian Police, Nigerian Employers' Consultative Association (NECA), The Committee of Vice Chancellors, The Committee of Rectors of Polytechnics, Citizenship and Leadership Training Centre, Ex-NYSC Management staff and the NYSC Director of Corps Welfare and Inspection Department, who serves as member/Secretary to the National Selection Committee. The assessment covers all segments of the service programme, requiring a high degree of objectivity. Every award winner is expected to have distinguished himself/herself in all the four cardinal phases of the service year - the Orientation/induction course; the Primary Assignment; th e Secondary Assignment (Community Development Service); and the windingup/passing-out activities. Above all, he/she would have conceived/initiated and/or executed a personal community service project that would benefit his/her host community, tangibly. Emphasis is, therefore, placed on achievements that are of durable benefit to the host community. In addition, such personal qualities as character, sense of duty, drive and determination, reliability, initiative and resourcefulness, command and leadership, team work, special contributions, self-confidence, and emotional poise are assessed and weighted in concrete terms. The assessment of the performance of each nominee is therefore based on the report and records of these attributes and concrete achievements. Those so selected would have received the Local Government or State Honours Awards to qualify for consideration at the national level. Thereafter, the nominees are sent to the National Selection Committee under strict confidentiality for further scrutiny. The selection process places greater emphasis on merit and also on a truly national basis regardless of the number of winners emerging from a particular state of deployment. The President, Federal Republic of Nigeria usually presides over the event to confer the honours award on the recipients. The award attracts the following: A National Certificate of honour duly signed by His Excellency, the President, Federal Republic of Nigeria A gold medal An automatic employment in the Federal Civil Service Cash prize Since the inception of the scheme 37 years ago, a total of 891 ex-corps members have been conferred with the HonoursAward and with the 51 recipients at the 2010 ceremony, the figure increases to 942. As a side attraction to the ceremony, there is usually an exhibition of works of art, fabrications, inventions and engineering models produced by corps members, as well as a display of agricultural products from some NYSC farms, and samples of goods produced in some small-scale industries built and operated by the NYSC. |

The national honours award is sth u should never put ur mind on bc u can't predict if u would win. Besides, u must hav succeeded in winning d state honours award b4 ur state of service recommends u to d national level for further screening (which should be unknown to u). There is a team dt is sent frm abuja to go to d location of each prjt sent to dem to be sure dt wht d state claims is true. The inspectors records their findings and also goes thru d file of d selected corps members. A different team then critically look into d projects b4 d selectn.It is a rigorous process. Remember preferences are given to those who served in core villages. Eg: someone who builds a hospital in a village +bore hole (i.e is 2 prjts) would be preferred to d person who does same in a city or state capital. That's d essence of d award-to encourage postings to d village while copers help to strengthen relationship with d communities thru their projects which will be of great benefit to dem . Also, if u redeployed or influenced ur posting plz don't bother doing prjt bc u just disqualified urself n would end with nothing. (Lastly,Dis one na my own idea oh- National award prjt should not be one or two prjts like d example I stated abv but should be like 7 prjts n abv which will be a blessing to d lives of d villagers not copers. NOTE: This 2014 NYSC Presidential honours award comprised d set from. 1st year: 2010 C ,2011A, 2011 B 2nd year :2011 C ,2012 A, 2012 B 3rd year : 2012 C, 2013 A, 2013 B. These 3 sets were combined frm which I guess selection was done and it had to be frm d very best based on their criteria. Usually winners were meant to come frm each set but I don't knw why it happened dis way now. If u had a state award and u emerged 1st ur state sends ur prjt and dt of any other winners d committee think is whot it to d national level. At d national level u can't predict . U go just dey pray make ur prjt make sense for their eyes! 1 Like |

Bros, if one has been selected on merit in the state award, it simply means tht all the presidential award nominees all merit the national award, but the national has a different standard to selct merit out of the merits. The award is hopeful next week. If not next week... Then its next year january... I was also selected... At least we already ve hotel addresses... Okay wat can u say about wat is happening now, d last award done was in 2010, so now they are combining like 8 or 9 batches together, and from wat I heard, 2 people are not selected from a state. If u are goin to combine 9 batches then I don't think dats fair 1 guy built a clinic and supplied d clinic with medication, in a small town in Ekiti wer sponsors are not easy to come by and he wasn't honored, another built a corpers lodge, I am not sure he was selected sef Bro, left to me, anytin FG isn't worth believing... I feel ur point of view. Anyway the last award was 17 January 2012. , I am not here to vindicate the govt from any nepotism, but my point is that, they ve some criteria. Someone has said it b4 here, u may do a nice project but the location counts (interior villages are given preference), the number of projects counts too, how the project directly affects the life of a common villager in that village. My brother, from my experience, after all the building of any project, one has to back it up with one or 2 seminar or entrepreneural empowerment project, these neglected side is the bomb in the selection criteria. As for selection, even more than 2 can come from a state so long as their project merit it... Its on merit countsparrow: |

Assuming der are 50 winners, 20 get chosen due to external influence, and d remaining 30 on merit, would u still say the award is on merit You might be lucky to be part of d 30, but what of the 20 whose slot wer given to others who don't merit it and wer helped by pple in high places...Nothing involving the FG is on MERIT |

countsparrow: Well I can assure you that I don't "know all" but one thing I'm sure of is that -believe it or not- award (in my own case) is strictly based on merit. . To be sincere I was once like you and was downbeat about any chance of winning Presidential award - believing it to be based on nepotism and cronyism. The news was met with both surprise and happiness. Allow me to fill you in on some of my projects 1. Computer training (hands on) for a month with over 40 participants (morning and evening sessions, Monday to Friday) 2. In light of poor performance by students in Maths, I organized, for the whole community, two months tutorials on the subject with over 100 students in attendance throughout the duration. 3. Donated 4 fully equipped first aid boxes to four different Schools. 4 De-wormed over 1,000 students of the community 5. hoisted the Nigerian and Cross river flag. 6. Gave 2 brilliant but less-privileged students full scholarship (tuition, books etc) 7. Constructed 9 twin sitter desk and chair 8 Distributed over 500 textbooks, notebooks and writing materials to 3 different schools 2 Likes |
