In Addition To Your Character, Your Reputation Matters Too!!! by MizMyColi(f): 4:37pm On Dec 13, 2014 |
Someone said and I quote:- "Worry about your character, not your reputation. Character is who you are, Reputation is what others think you are ^^^ I agree and I disagree Character and Reputation go hand in hand. Reputation is the root of being in a position of leadership or influence. It is built over a period of time....One deed at a time, one action after another. It is easily lost! You should never down play one at the expense of the other. Reputation is built as a result of character. If there's a massive change in character, because it cannot be hidden, there will be a massive change in reputation too. (Except of course, a person chooses to lead a dismal false life). ^^^ Against this backdrop, on both counts, you should be worried. No man exists in and of himself. We are social and dependent beings. It is only natural for every human to want to maintain goodwill among his fellow humans, it may even be bad will......depending on how he or she started out. I believe that there is a yearning in every sane person to self improve....to project self towards the path of perfection, to be a better person, for the greater good. How each person defines "better and perfect" remains relative and at best what they should decide for themselves. But one very important and cannot be ignored factor we can use to measure our progress vis a vis our character and relations with others is -- Public Opinion Publics differ for different people, and are similar in some cases. Publics in this context would mean small (and sometimes large) groups of people who follow you very closely. They are well informed about you and also have a very strong opinion of you. They tend to know more about you than the "average" person, and, therefore, exert more influence, because these people care so deeply about you that they donate time, treasure and talent to you than "others" (outsiders) ordinarily would. Simply put; Without Them, There Would Be No You. This is not to say that you should commence living your life based on your publics opinion...... No No. Wisdom Remains Profitable To Direct Be Your Best Self Be Original Do Whatever Pleases And Makes You Happy. But as a checks and balance of sorts......just know that people are watching. Ultimately, we serve our reputation best by putting forth our best self and letting our character speak for itself. 3 Likes 8 Shares |

I'd wanted posting this only on my blog, which I'm still building. But I thought to share here too as a result of comments I saw on a thread that involved a Nairaland celebrity and a "female", and others. A particular comment he made didn't sit too well with me....... Given his position of influence, which, apparently matters little to him. Oh well, it is what it is. Let the wise learn and keep improving. Cheers |

Is this for real life or for Nairaland? |

MizMyColi: Okay, I examined your write-up again and I kinda disgree with your standpoint. Let's use a case: say a guy is gay, yet good. Don't you think public opinion of him in Nigeria will deliver greatly from public opinion of him in, say, Germany. Which public opinion should such person now use as a yardstick to determine exactly how "reputable" he is? Doesn't your standpoint create confusion somewhat? 2 Likes |

MizMyColi:@bolded. It not only matters little to him, it doesn't matter at all to him. He said it by himself. When I read through the thread too, I almost did this. But I don't have enough resources. I can't write English much. Lol Thanks. Ayamlaykorn |

goofyuncut: Your case in point slightly differs from the message I was trying to get across. I defined a person's publics in the OP. Now, going by that..... I'm yet to correlate how being gay affects a person's character, and ultimately reputation. That said, I made this post on the premise that the person must have fit successfully among a group of people (His publics). I also mentioned in the post that "better and perfection" remain relative terms. You hardly hear people say "he has a reputation for being gay." But you can hear them say "that gay boy has a reputation of always telling the truth, he hardly attacks those who spite him" ^There, he is building a reputation, one deed at a time. That a person is sly, coy, rude, careful with words or extremely good has nothing to do with his being gay. True, people may form an opinion based on his attitude and his sexuality, beht, that would be on diff pedestals. Attitude is everything! 1 Like |

laykorn: Lolest well, I didn't see the part where he made such comment, but if he actually did, then he might as well change his highly conspicuous signature. People in his order have conducted themselves in more respectable manner. They understand that as long as they remain in the spotlight and in a position of influence.....there's really no """free speech""". Their speech ought to be seasoned with generally accepted ethical moderation and salt. 1 Like |
