The International Federation of Association Football awards the 'best player
of the year' with the FIFA Ballon d'Or. Previously two separate awards, the FIFA player of the year award and the
Ballon d'Or, these merged in 2010 to form the FIFA Ballon d'Or. The original Ballon d'Or, which translates as 'the Golden Ball', was an
association football award presented to the European player to have shown
the best performance in the previous year. A change of rules in 1995
extended the eligibility of the award to non-European players if they were
enlisted with a European club. Since 2007 all professional players, no matter
where they come from or who they play for, could be nominated. Coaches, captains and journalists cast their votes each year for their
favourite players. Players are judged not only on their technical skills but
also on their sociability and disposition.

The original list of 23 players, who are considered the best
players in the world, was narrowed down to three predictable picks; Real
Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo, FC Barcelona’s Lionel Messi and Bayern Munich’s Manuel Neuer were invited to Zurich to be in attendance for the ceremony on January 12th, 2015. Ronaldo is the overwhelming favorite to win the Ballon d’Or again for the second consecutive year. However, 2014 saw Lionel Messi take the Argentina
National team to the World Cup Finals in Brazil where his team was minutes
away from perhaps winning the game on penalty kicks. Manuel Neuer is the
favorite of many people recently including Manchester United coach Louis Van Gaal and others who believe that the Ballon d’Or winner should come from the country that won the 2014 World Cup, in this case Germany. For the past six years the award has either been won by Messi or Ronaldo as
they have claimed a duopoly on the sport’s top individual prize. Messi won
the award from 2009-2012 and Ronaldo won in 2008 and 2013. There is a 67
percent chance that one of those two will win the award again for the
seventh consecutive time. Both players are also finalists for the FIFA FIFPro World XI. Both made the list as forwards and should be on the final XI when
it is announced. Manuel Neuer who won the FIFA Golden Gloves award in Brazil for the World
Cup’s top goalkeeper, is looking to become just the second ever goalkeeper

The Fifa Ballon d'Or is the
most coveted individual
prize in world football
and will be awarded for
the fifth time in history
on January 12 in Zurich.
Three finalists have been shortlisted for the
prize, with Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo
favourite to retain his crown ahead of
Barcelona attacker Lionel Messi and Bayern
Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who played
a pivotal role as Germany won the World Cup
in the summer.
While the Portuguese claimed the 2013 prize
last January, he is still playing catch-up to his
Argentine rival, who had taken the honour of
world's greatest player for the first three
years since its inception.
This elite trio have been whittled down from
an initial shortlist of 23, which was named on
October 28, with the identity of the three stars
only revealed on December 1.
The award is an amalgam of the previous Fifa
World Player of the Year and France Football's
Ballon d'Or and, as such, the methodology to
decide the winner is a hybrid of previous
prizes.
The captains and coaches of national teams all
round the world vote for a winner, but so too
do journalists.
It was media representatives who decided the
original Ballon d'Or, which was established in
1956 and paid tribute to the game's greatest
stars playing in Europe. As such, Pele did not
win the prize during his career and was
awarded an honorary title by Fifa in 2014.
Indeed, Fifa only created their World Player of
the Year title in 1991.
But it is not just the Fifa Ballon d'Or that will
be presented at the Awards Gala in Zurich.
The year's greatest coach will be unveiled, as
well as the Fifa FIFPro World XI and the Puskas
Award, which was first presented in 2009 to
the scorer of the most beautiful goal in the
preceding 12 months. In this regard, Ronaldo
is one up on Messi, having won the inaugural
prize.
Of course, Goal will provide extensive content
in the days leading up to the Gala, with
interviews, reaction and analysis of the event,
plus live coverage of the ceremony itself.
