The PDP has been using the issue of high taxation to sway voters ahead of next year’s election. How will the APC ensure that this does not count against it?

Igbokwe: Taxation is an avenue to development. There is much fuss because people are not used to paying tax. A person spends N200m on throwing a party and no one asks him where he got the money from. We don’t pay tax in Nigeria. In the United Kingdom and even the United States where there is oil, they pay tax. Oil prices are already falling and my prayer is that it falls to about $2 per barrel so that governors will stop going to Abuja to beg for money and then they will understand the issue of tax. There is nothing wrong in collecting tax; it has been done through the ages. The only problem is when you collect tax and don’t use it efficiently. If the PDP wants to use tax against the APC in Lagos then they have failed. Only Lagos is not being affected by reduction in oil price. Look at their campaigns when oil prices are crashing. A former Commonwealth Secretary-General, Emeka Anyaoku, who has spent about 50 years abroad, told Fashola that government gets money through tax round the world. He paid all his taxes and was awarded by the state government. Lagos has over 20 million people. How else will the state generate revenue without tax? Let those in shops pay. Those are people who can spend up to N50,000 a night on Isi Ewu and drinks. Before it was only civil servants that were paying tax while big traders were not paying. I have even told my governor in Anambra State to generate revenue through tax. People should pay Land Use Charge. Traders should be taxed and we should use the money effectively. Now that Abuja is complaining that there is no money and is implementing austerity measures, let us see how the PDP plans to govern Lagos without tax. So, they are not smart if they think they can use tax as a campaign strategy.

The PDP has accused your party of marginsalising the Igbo and it is rumoured to be considering an Igbo deputy governor

Igbokwe:

I am Igbo and I am the General Manager of Lagos State Infrastructure Maintenance and Regulatory Agency. I am the publicity secretary of our party while Ben Akabueze is the Commissioner for Budget and Planning. We have Igbos in the judiciary. In schools, they are principals and vice principals, we have Igbos in the civil service but they (PDP) are not seeing it. Our people are substantial investors in Lagos. What my people have in Lagos, they don’t have a quarter of it in the whole of Igbo land. I have been living in Lagos for about 30 years, so I know what I am saying. I was in Lagos then went back for secondary school in 1974 and then attended University of Nigeria, Nsukka and graduated in 1985, Since then I have been in Lagos and I will soon write a book about my life in Lagos. So, what do my people want in Lagos? Did they come to Lagos to look for deputy governorship slot? With all the things we have achieved here, we should be praising Lagos and the South-West for providing a conducive atmosphere for us to thrive. We control some of the markets in Lagos and we should be grateful for such hospitality. I have told my people that the people of Lagos have said they don’t want the PDP in their state and we must ensure that we do not go against their wishes. The Oba of Lagos has said PDP is not good for Lagos and the people whose land we inhabit have said they don’t want the PDP and they (Igbo) have to listen. The Yoruba rejected their son, Olusegun Obasanjo, at all levels. Let us not provoke the Yoruba here by demanding for deputy governorship slot. The people have been having problems in the North, let us not cause crisis here. My people should not be used to go against the wishes of the Yoruba people.

I know a lot of people that are sympathetic to the APC at the national level but disagree with the way APC is running Lagos. Too many Tinubu cronies are getting rich overnight. Tinubu himself is buying up everywhere on the Island. We need to put an end to this daylight robbery.
