* The three colors of Mexico’s flag hold deep significance for the country and its citizens: green represents hope and victory, white stands for the purity of Mexican ideals and red brings to mind the blood shed by the nation’s heroes.
* The flag’s dramatic emblem is based on the legend of how the Mexicas (or Aztecs) traveled from Aztlán to find the place where they could establish their empire. The god Huitzilopochtli advised them that a sign—an eagle devouring a serpent atop a Nopal cactus—would appear to them at the exact spot where they should begin construction. On a small island in the middle of a lake, the Mexicas came upon the scene exactly as Huitzilopochtli had described it. They immediately settled there and founded the city of Tenochtitlán, which is now Mexico City, the country’s capital.
* Mexico is the third-largest country in Latin America after Brazil and Argentina.

* At the beginning of the 21st century, Mexico's population surpassed 100 million.

* Mexico has the largest population of Spanish speakers in the world.

* With almost 25 million residents, Mexico City is one of the most populous metropolitan areas in the world.
* Mexico has the world’s second-highest number of Catholics after Brazil.

* At nearly 2,000 miles, the border between Mexico and the United States is the second-longest in the world, after the border between the United States and Canada.
* Mexicans comprise the largest group of legal immigrants in the United States.

* Mexico is located in an area known as the Pacific “Ring of Fire.” This region, one of Earth’s most dynamic tectonic areas, is characterized by active volcanoes and frequent seismic activity. The highest point in the country, Citlaltépetl (also called Orizaba) and the active volcano Popocatépetl are among the many volcanic peaks in Mexico.
* The Great Ball Court at Chichén Itzá Mexico, which was used for ritualistic sports by the ancient Mayans, is the largest such court the world, measuring 166 by 68 meters (545 by 232 feet). The game, which involved elements similar to those of soccer and basketball, was played by two teams whose number varied according to region.
* Tequila, a liquor for which Mexico is famous, is made from the native blue agave plant. Named after the city where it originated, Tequila is primarily manufactured near Jalisco, which is 65 kilometers (40 miles) northwest of Guadalajara.
* Mexico is the world’s leading producer of silver. An area called the Silver Belt—which encompasses Guanajuato and Zacatecas in the Mesa Central, Chihuahua in the Mesa del Norte and San Luis Potosi farther east—saw significant mining activity during the colonial period.
* Mexico hosted the Summer Olympics in 1968 and the FIFA World Cup soccer championship in 1970 and 1986.
* The Mexico City Arena—one of the largest bullfighting arenas in the world—seats 50,000. Another 35 arenas are located throughout the country.

Re: Living In Mexico: What Do Nairalanders Think? by bawomolo(m): 6:49pm On Oct 07, 2008
they have tough immigration laws in Mexico, they prefer people going out rather than coming in. besides mexico city, there isn't that much of a job market.

start learning Spanish ASAP.

I heard Mexico has a lot of gang activity and warfare, but as long as you face what you went there to do, it shouldnt be a problem, hopefully.

And yes, I heard they dont hesitate to deport foreigners. Blacks are no exception.

i have been to Cancun on vacation and like i said before it's really nice. Honestly you need to learn Spanish and the wage rate over there is really bad due to their money being almost as bad as if not worse than the naira. They are also very prejudice in Mexico if you ain't a Mexican they look at you crazy even if you are a Spanish person and God help you if you don't speak Spanish. Gang activity is very rampant over there drug sales and activity is big there too but those are just a few of the negatives that you can look at. On the positive side Mexico is a beautiful country with people who still embrace their culture. They have incredibly education people there and One of the richest guys in the world is from Mexico. Tourism is big in Mexico and the beaches in Cancun were wonderful.

Going to Mexico for jobs is not a good idea.

Going to Mexico for School is also useless; you could as well go to Spain.

Mexico is not different from Nigeria.

Even much worse when you think of its closeness to USA as compared with Canada's progress.

There is lot of gang killings and its generally a dangerous place.

That said, it has one of most flourishing tourism in AMERICAS due to its Maya History and good sandy-beaches.

If Mexico is a stepping stone to US or Canada then it could make sense.
Re: Living In Mexico: What Do Nairalanders Think? by shotster50(m): 10:29pm On Oct 10, 2008
Mexico is definitely not an option if you havent got a plan. Most Mexicans are in America, the ones that arent, are shooting each to the last man.
I dont mean to scare you but just google 'mexican shootings'.
Re: Living In Mexico: What Do Nairalanders Think? by blackspade(m): 12:42am On Oct 11, 2008
I don't recommend Mexico for any Black person. Mexico is one of the few countries in Latin-America that don't have a history of Black populations, and therefor the population is fairly ignorant towards Blacks, and they aren't shy about their racism either. Venture out of the tourist zone while Black, and you'll find yourself being harassed by the police, with them asking to sing the Mexican anthem in Spanish. Again, I suggest you look somewhere else. undecided

Hey! fellow nairalander don't be totally discouraged. Make sure you have a plan B. If your school is paid for, good. Think of how you can use your mind and this experience to create a legacy for yourself.

"The mind should be used for creativity"

1. Write a book about your experience in Mexico. (An African in Mexico) Remember me when it blowwwws up!
2. Keep a journal
3. Take pictures

We live in a time where information is money.

Mexico has the highest rate of kidnapping in the world; as seen on cnn.
Re: Living In Mexico: What Do Nairalanders Think? by 360command: 9:55am On Nov 01, 2008
i do not know much about mexico in reality but i do know much more about mexico virtualy. Now

the thing about mexico; for you going to mexico ,you need to put your mind crossed that were

you are going to is a third world country but you must know that for the fact that you are a

nigerian leaving the shores of nigeria, irrespective of where you are going to, be it

Benin,Camroon,Gabon or sudan, you have that tendency to make it there compared to thier own

citizen who likes to lazy around. Now, let me correct some people here.

Your chances of getting kidnapped in Mexico are slim, unless you are a really rich person

and then you probably have bodyguards.Your chances of having something bad happening to you

in Mexico are slimmer than in the United States. There are certainly more murders in New

Orleans than any comparable Mexican city.NOTE: you should be worried about staying in the

border cities of mexico like Laredo, Cd. Juarez and Tijuana specifically becos of the

violence that happens there.

To those who said studying in mexico is useless, well i have this to say to you , I do

know that when it comes to Countries in the Latin america region and its education , Mexico

is ahead, there are international schools(more of US) in mexico and one can easily apply

for transcript to school in the USA.(i dont think Brazil or argentina's education can be

beter than that of mexico)

Also, its ironicalsadbut you better believe it) Americans are willing to come to mexico, but

the mexican immigration are not willing to let them in, so it is vice-versa, about mexicano

who are wanting to die just to see that they enter the USA( the same thing applies to nigerians

who travel by road to go to Spain)The U.S. embassy in Mexico City estimates that there were

more than 600,000 Americans living in Mexico. An estimated 300,000 Canadians live in Mexico,

at least part-time.

the mexican economy is tied up with that of the US economy , so if the US economy is down

that of mexico's economy would go down , if if its smiling thiers would also smile back,

living in mexico, its relatively cheaper than that of US and canada, but there are places

in mexico that is relatively high like Monterrey and mexico city(those are two i know)Cancun

is relatively cheap(OK),environmental friendly, great tourist attractions.

The country is currupt , so as our country(at least our own dan de better) but i would say thiers is woefully currupt ,

becos i cannot imagine a situation were the police would be supportin the gangstas and drug

lords, in thier criminal activity(President Calderón(president of mexico) seems to be serious about cracking down on drug gangs by using the military to rage war against them).

if you know what you are doing, just be yourself, bad guys or no bad guys, nothing de happen , its not you that they are looking for ,

the issue of racial discrimination been black, i really dont know about that, but from the way i look at it, its s.america, there are blacks there , but i know that there are more blacks in brazil compare to mexico,

funny enuf i have friends(lawyers) who can help you with paper work, i hope this words as touch the heart of some people
