Why Don't Africans On The Continent Celebrate Kwanzaa? by igbo2011(m): 6:31pm On Dec 28, 2014 |
I noticed that Africans celebrate Christian, Islamic, and European holidays but we don't celebrate Pan-African holidays. Do Jewish people celebrate German holidays? Do Armenians celebrate Turkish (Ottoman Empire) holidays? Do Arabs celebrate Israel holidays? Why do we celebrate holidays of people who enslaved, colonized and continue to neocolonize us? When people try to push them then people call you "Afrocentric" why is this? Here is information and a website on Kwanzaa. As an African American and Pan-African holiday celebrated by millions throughout the world African community, Kwanzaa brings a cultural message which speaks to the best of what it means to be African and human in the fullest sense. Given the profound significance Kwanzaa has for African Americans and indeed, the world African community, it is imperative that an authoritative source and site be made available to give an accurate and expansive account of its origins, concepts, values, symbols and practice. Moreover, given the continued rapid growth of Kwanzaa and the parallel expanded discussion of it and related issues, an authoritative source which aids in both framing and informing the discussion is likewise of the greatest importance. Therefore, the central interest of this website is to provide information which reveals and reaffirms the integrity, beauty and expansive meaning of the holiday and thus aids in our approaching it with the depth of thought, dignity, and sense of specialness it deserves. The holiday, then will of necessity, be engaged as an ancient and living cultural tradition which reflects the best of African thought and practice in its reaffirmation of the dignity of the human person in community and culture, the well-being of family and community, the integrity of the environment and our kinship with it, and the rich resource and meaning of a people's culture. It is within this understanding, then, that the Organization Us, the founding organization of Kwanzaa and the authoritative keeper of the tradition, has established and maintains this website. http://www.officialkwanzaawebsite.org/index.shtml 1 Like |

igbo2011: Kwanzaa was a holiday devised in the USA. It was never brought to, or promoted, in Africa the way christmas was. Not sure what ''world African community'' you're talking about. Expecting Africans to celebrate Kwanzaa is as foolish as expecting African Americans to celebrate the New Yam festival. 3 Likes |

igbo2011: OP, people celebrate those based on their faith. Now if that faith is real or not is a mater for another day. I believe those celebrating sango, yemonja and other orishas are worshiper of those deities, they did not just decide to celebrate it because they heard people in Africa celebrate it. They do it because its their own beliefs. Just as christians world over celebrate christian hollidays, jews world over do same, muslims world over do same and orisha worshipers world over do same. The only wahala I have now is this halloween celebration our people have started doing. Who knows, since satanism is creeping upon us, maybe they are the ones introducing halloween to us. 1 Like |

Kwanzaa is an African and Pan-African holiday which celebrates family, community and culture. Celebrated from 26 December thru 1 January, its origins are in the first harvest celebrations of Africa from which it takes its name. The name Kwanzaa is derived from the phrase "matunda ya kwanza" which means "first fruits" in Swahili, a Pan-African language which is the most widely spoken African language. The first-fruits celebrations are recorded in African history as far back as ancient Egypt and Nubia and appear in ancient and modern times in other classical African civilizations such as Ashantiland and Yorubaland. These celebrations are also found in ancient and modern times among societies as large as empires (the Zulu or kingdoms (Swaziland) or smaller societies and groups like the Matabele, Thonga and Lovedu, all of southeastern Africa. Kwanzaa builds on the five fundamental activities of Continental African "first fruit" celebrations: ingathering; reverence; commemoration; recommitment; and celebration. Kwanzaa, then, is: a time of ingathering of the people to reaffirm the bonds between them; a time of special reverence for the creator and creation in thanks and respect for the blessings, bountifulness and beauty of creation; a time for commemoration of the past in pursuit of its lessons and in honor of its models of human excellence, our ancestors; a time of recommitment to our highest cultural ideals in our ongoing effort to always bring forth the best of African cultural thought and practice; and a time for celebration of the Good, the good of life and of existence itself, the good of family, community and culture, the good of the awesome and the ordinary, in a word the good of the divine, natural and social. |
