logica:The reason I never used connotation is for the benefit of sticking to the point. If it is the same, then what does the general definition of smartness means? That would be the question needing answer for you to understand this argument about what actually differentiate smartness from intelligence as a whole. Even while still going by the synonym. It measures subject of intelligence in half not in full. Even the dictionary definition of intelligence is mere stating without explanations. So, there is more to intelligence than smartness! |

all4naija: Yes! Those are part of it. The questions surrounding how much these emotions, inclinations to spirituality and others play in our daily lives or activities are enormous. They play very important roles in our society.Which is why I pointed it out to you that those kinds of "intelligence" are the creation of socialist psychologists who would rather perpetuate the illusion that we are all equal. The fact that you even speak of "Spiritual Intelligence" indicates you've gone into the realm of quasi-science/pseudoscience. 1 Like |

Even if the spirituality as against 'spiritual intelligence' you are alluding to here is part of what make up the humans and society differentiating them from animals still require some abilities, even though, you can not see beyond god or religion part of it. I hope you'll understand this one clearly! |

GenBuhari: Is the IQ test written in Nigeria's language rather than english and based on things Nigerians understand?. your arguments proved their IQ test wrong.... very brilliant... |

ektbear: I think your comment suggests that you are experiencing cognitive dissonance. IQ tests are best tool for measuring intelligence, and they are only getting better. Just because you don't like the results (which are true), doesn't mean the test is flawed. |

GenBuhari: IQ tests aren't about cultural pastimes, they involve mathematical and problem solving equations and such. You're not very bright yourself, from what I see. |
Re: The Average IQ Of Nigeria Is 69 by yokoro: 9:13pm On Dec 28, 2014 |
semid4lyfe: Actually, it is. The average IQ across almost all of sub-saharan Africa are below 70. That's been shown countless times. |
Re: The Average IQ Of Nigeria Is 69 by Nobody: 9:20pm On Dec 28, 2014 |
yokoro:I agree with your assertion on typical sub-Saharan Africans. But, IQ doesn't measure intelligence per se. That is the truth. |
Re: The Average IQ Of Nigeria Is 69 by Nobody: 9:23pm On Dec 28, 2014 |
IQ tests include questions that require understanding of english language & culture. As well as general reasoning. Just the fact that it is written in english already puts any person who's first language is not english at a disadvantage. This a proven scientific fact. yokoro: |

If your mother tongue is not english you would struggle to fully understand the questions. example question I just culled from a sample IQ test: Which one of the five is least like the other four? I can assure you that many people viewing this thread may not fully understand what the question is asking them to do. 1 Like |

When you see people shouting GEJ till 2019 and Sai Buhari, you wonder if there is some truth to these claims about Nigerian IQ. However, the specific claim here, that Nigerians have an average IQ of 69 is utterly false. You will find that the source of these claims has financial links to white supremacist groups. IQ is a proxy for academic intelligence and not intelligence in the fullest of sense. Intelligence is hard to define and IQ may only measure, at worst, an ability to take IQ tests or, at best, scholastic aptitude. I would concede that Nigerians may have marginally lower IQs than Westerners but not to the point of imbecility as a mean IQ of 69 would imply. Lower IQ may explain Nigerians' anti-intellectualism as evidenced on this forum. 2 Likes |

GenBuhari:You based the criteria for measuring the IQ on English language. You state the reason why you think people who don't achieve much on the test are those whose mother's tongues are not English language. Which means Japanese and Koreans are expected to perform poorly as their mother's tongues are not English language. |

Japanese & Koreans take the test in their own language. Also a factor is standard of education. If person can barely read how can they answer the questions? all4naija: |

GenBuhari: Test of IQ is not meant for illiterates in the first place. If you mean to say English language being the lingua franca of some African nations which perform poorly in the test is a factor I can agree with that. But, it is not what IQ is centered around to measure the test. You just proved that in this your very post it is not about English language. |

Re: The Average IQ Of Nigeria Is 69 by Nobody: 8:53am On Dec 29, 2014 |
It is a scientific fact that people whose mother tongue are not English are at a disadvantage in any test written in English. Furthermore level of literacy also plays a role. African children born in UK whose mother tongue tend to be english, outperform their white counterparts in exams. all4naija: |

You have to take the data for what it is.. The test results have shown a lower IQ level in Sub Saharan Africa.. And that's all there is to it.. It's not throwing an insult really.. It is simply data.. It does not mean that nothing can ever change that.. It does not mean that every Sub Saharan African is less capable or less intelligent.. It does not mean many things really.. But you can not disregard this data.. Numbers do not lie.. Now, if you wish to further investigate and understand what may cause Africans to have lower IQ, then you can start doing research and you will see that everything adds up.. For example, it is statistically true that children who are beaten when they are small tend to have a lower IQ than children who are not beaten.. Many studies have been done about this and it has been shown that children who have been beaten as kids grow up to be more violent, more irrational and with a lower IQ.. http://www.unh.edu/news/cj_nr/2009/sept/lw25straus.cfm Mhmmm, perhaps it might have something to do with how we are brought up by our parents as almost all Nigerians have memories of being beaten as kids by their parents and by their teachers.. Studies also show that kids who are beaten in their teenage years are even more likely to be more aggressive, violent and with lower IQ.. Not only were we beaten, but we were also subjected to states of condensed fear and anxiety at very young ages.. This has been statistically demonstrated to have very drastic psychological effects in a child's life.. In Nigeria we just consider it perfectly normal to beat your kid until he is trembling in fear and in pain, crying without even knowing or understanding what he has done wrong as he asks "what did I do" and the parent doesnt even properly explain what he did.. It has also been statistically demonstrated that first born children tend to have a higher IQ than other siblings.. Although statistics show that their IQ is only higher by a single point, it might have something to do with why, countries like China and Europe (where almost everybody is a first born) tend to have a much higher IQ level.. Whereas countries like Sub Saharan Africa, where the average couple has between 7 and 25 kids, has a lower national average IQ.. Many Sub Saharan African children are also subjected to malnourishment at birth and during pregnancy and all of this also inhibits the proper development of the child in his early years, crippling them in the long run.. Another very important thing to note is also the fact that IQ is not really a talent but rather it is a skill.. It is something which can be trained and developed through practice hence why as we grow our IQ also changes and it peaks at a certain age.. Just looking at the generally manual life of the average Sub Saharan African, it is not surprising to find out that our brains are untrained.. Unlike the average life of kids in France or in Japan where very little is done by hand and almost everything is done with their head.. These are only a few of the things that contribute to making someone have a low IQ.. And in Sub Saharan Africa we basically just do all the wrong things.. This then affects our lives, our economies, our social interactions and our well being as a people.. |
