The main reasons most Nigerians chase phd is cos they need it to hype their jobs CV or probably to add some form of respect to their names..
Only few do it do it for d actual love..

I plan to do my phd not cause I wanna lecture but because I wanna build my career in the administrative sector.

I agree with all these.

I decided to pursue a PhD because my job requires it. Now, I don't know where to classify that.

It has, however, given me intense satisfaction and joy, it makes me feel I can truly earn my 'strifes' in my chosen profession.

On the downside, it is incredibly difficult and requires total commitment and focus. Plus one has to choose (for those of us studying in Nigeria) one's supervisors carefully.

Its indispensable for those in the academics. My advice for the singles is to put in for their PhD immediately after their masters. If I had taken heed to this advice, I would have completed the program by now.

PhD is basically and entry point to the Research field. If you are not ready to be a researcher (which can be sometimes boring) don't venture into it.

I so agree. I was practically forced by my superiors in my school to enroll for a PhD. Thankfully, I will be done with it by late 2015.

You must not use a PhD as a method to stay close to your friends or family, any more than you should commit a crime and have yourself locked up in jail. It is not worth it. And jail is the cheapest and easiest option by far.

Don't know if you are single or married. Whichever the case, dont waste time to put in for it in the next available opportunity. Am seizing next year by God's Grace. Had it not been for my marriage and children, I would have loved to do it abroad as there lots of scholarships. Wishing you the best dear!

Good write up. It is good to know the cost of a project and your capacity to complete it before you embark on it.

A for me, I will do it too just as I have quoted here.

There are people who did it for the ''wrong'' reasons and finished. In fact they finished so well it was shocking.

Just as there are people who did it for the ''right'' reasons and did not complete it.

That is life. I mean we could as well say we are not doing lots of things. Some things we did not even have a choice. They were done reluctantly and we came out successful.

I do not see anything special about a PhD. and the seeming mystification attached to it. I saw people who came out successfully and those who did not. Just like in the undergraduate days and just about every other activity in life.
