Rojenny Stadium though a 'Private' investment, but being supported by the Anambra-State govt to the tune of 30million Naira!. You can see in the picture the rehabitation work going on in the Stadium!
I can see the rehabilitation going on too but that stadium no make sense. Neros stadium is also private stadium but was built up in a tight way. The road that leads to it was beautify with flowers.

Obiano is trying to make life flexible in any possible way by hosting xmas cup. Its good sha.

He later came to the stadium to give medals to gold winners.

The active onitsha fire fighters(fire service) has done well to save a building from christmas/new year tragedy.

They arrived the area before me, they have almost put out the fire when I arrived at the scene na only white smoke I see coming out from the fifth floor.

Before getting to the location the fire has been put off.

The building back to normal.
The fire only succeeded in raping one room at the fifth floor which I assumed is the room where the fire started.

Good! This is what is expected when you have a functioning government. Just seeing that very clean, well equipped firefighter truck tells you they mean business!

I actually joined NL sometime last year or when i stumbled over the site during my PhD dissertation. I was doing online research on FGM and stumbled on this site, where someone had accused Igbos of FGM lately. I washed shocked being a mother, an Igbo woman and I was sure it had been stopped some time ago to the best of my knowledge.
I was soon turned off by the NL site, until i peeped again someday and saw more horrible stuff said about Igbo women and dished on Stella Oduah!

I realized like in the poster that i had to speak up quickly and i did. Sometimes using unsavory language. My husband HATES NL and he knows that when I'm free, it's my favorite hang out place... because i sincerely believe that in our interaction ( sometimes rough), we learn from each other's unique life experience. Which will often help us solve many problems confronting us. In 2009 or 2010, Peter Obi was once asked by ASA,USA what Anambra people in the USA can do to contribute to our state's development and he answered us simply in two words- CONTRIBUTE IDEAS! grin

I have always considered myself lucky to marry into Anambra. This does not diminish the greatness of my parents state, Abia. I hitherto had zero interest in geography even in my secondary school days. However, since i married into Anambra, i had taken a keen interest to know where every community was located, their neighbors and their key customary practices (Omenala). Living both Anambra and Abia traditions firsthand has really enriched my life.

It doesnt get better than that, sis. I was born in Jos,grew up in Benin,Lagos and briefly in Anambra and I cant begin to tell you how much that has enriched my life. Infact,I have lived in the US more than any city I have lived in Nigeria. When I went home for my wedding some people find it hard to believe I am from US because my Igbo was so pure but then I also speaks and understands Yoruba and when I speak pigin people wont believe I am Igbo. People actually dont know I am Igbo until I speak the language. This is what traveling and mingling with different culture does to your life, It enriches you. I have always like Abia women because of my experience with a certain Ugochi.....lol
Its good to travel and experience different culture because it just kinda keeps you ahead of other people....A Benin man once told me I shouldn't be Igbo....Inukwa.
Once again, welcome to the swaggerliceous Anambra family.

I grew up in Onitsha, but i did live in Yaba, Lagos on St. Finbarrs college rd. for a while, and also read Chemical Engineering at ESUT before going to the US. So i have Onitsha accent and even my village guys call me Onitsha girl. lol grin
Unfortunately, not much show for Engineers in the US. So like my hubby, i switched to MPH in Environmental science and PhD in Global health. That gives away my true identity a little because few schools offer that in the US. However, I intentionally go by Yoruba name to disguise me a little as a promise to my husband that nobody "will arrest him" for his wife's online comments. Even though,we do have Yoruba in-laws in his family.

What should our government do to add more whitecollar jobs in Onicha, i hate a situation whereby out of 10 people you met in the city 8 are traders.

We need recreation facilities, we need amusement parks, we need hotels, ISP companies, why cant we have a bank head office in Onicha, must everything be in Lagos so that everytime our graduate pass out from service they will be running to Lagos causing braindrain in our states, what of insurance companies, consulting firms, law firms, real estate firms, Onicha deserve a Univ and Anambra is yet to have a state poly, ad agencies.

Some of these things i listed here are obtainable in Oka, our govt should organize seminars, workshops, conferences for Onicha traders to teach them about the need to embrace the 21st century ways of doing businesses.

My friend studied Computer Sci in NAU, he was into web designing in Onicha but he kept telling me the attitude of Onicha businessmen is not encouraging, tell them the benefits of having a website running and the need to do some social media marketing, branding and create identity for their business, they will be looking at you like your a 419er, afterall they are making money without all these in place why need them now.
My friend told me if you finally met one and tell him the price, he will school you on how simple your job is and why he is even doing you favour by trying to give you a job, they will be pricing it like "Azu Fridge" at Ochanja market, even their payment style isnt encouraging, so the dude abandoned the career and come to lagos to seek a banking job luckilly he got with UBA and his impression about Onicha businessmen havent changed.
They need orientation and attitudinal change. Most of them are confortable being importers but its the job of our government to remind them of the need to change from being consumer to being a producer.
Yes there is too much money in importation but the future is bleak if government policies come inplace.

I came to Lagos for an assignment for months ago, while surfing the net i stumbled on Konga site, i created account, login and ordered for a shoe, in less than 3days i got it at the address i provided.

Our ministry of trade, commerce and ANSIPPA need to be doing these things, everday new markets are being constructed in every corner of the state, must everybody go into trading?

Govt should do something to the economy of Onicha, its not balanced, the traders are boxing others on a tight corner and the govt is giving them undue advantage, they are buying up every available space, they park cars indiscriminately, they dispose refuse anyhow, they cross the xpressway instead of the pedestrian bridges, they corrupt our law enforcement agents with bribes because they have deep pockets.

Obiano and his govt should promote and save white collar businesses in Onicha, the informal sector domination of Onicha is not giving the city a rounded outlook and its not a global best practices.

Lets have shops, markets, companies, offices, hotels, restraunts, schools, cafes, studios, skycrapers, airports, et al well represented in the city.

Buddah you can cry oo..haba! cheesy

The next thing now you want US embassy to be sited in Okija too.. cheesy

Well you have made some points but I must confess to you that Onitsha economy is very balanced at the moment. Because when you look at the banking sector for instance..Onitsha has more banks than some states, do you know that those bank workers are all resident in the city thereby adding their own quota to the system. Even all those industries that are springing up around Harbor has all graduates working for them.

Again Onitsha has Nigerian Stock Exchange and also Securities and Exchange Commission. These are their regional offices in the East. These organizations have their own input to a great extent too. Roads like Awka road is like wall street of Onitsha where all the banks and other corporate organizations are domiciled. From real estate valuers to accountants to lawyers to other corporate establishments have their offices there. Just recently a body governing advertisers council of Nigeria just relocated their regional office to Onitsha.

Again do not under-estimate this business men as most of them are all graduates particularly the ones at Main market. They are well informed and well traveled. They travel around the world- from China to Dubai to Hongkong to import stuff. So they are very well enlightened with real life experience outside the shores of Nigeria. Three out of every five persons you meet in Main market or ElectroMart are globe-trotting. So they know so much even some of us do not know as much as they do.

Most Yoruba estate surveyors that operate in the East are only in Onitsha like the Jide Taiwo & Partners, Diya Fatimelehin & co etc. These are real estate giants that came from Lagos to establish in the East and the only place they found economically friendly worthy is Onitsha. There are equally big time law firms, travel agencies, accounting firms etc, that have found their way to the city because of its bouyance.

Government saw all these that was why they attracted the 5 star Raddison Blu and are completing the mall in the city to take care of these surge in the corporate society. Onitsha equally has good population of Asians and some Europeans resident around GRA and 3-3.

You don't expect to see a white collar person at Headbridge but Awka road, 3-3 etc where there offices or residence might be located. The same way you will not see white collar person in Oshodi but Island and Ikoyi. My parents stays at Trans-Nkisi housing, this place was built up with low density type housing- Duplexes and bungalows. It is different from where we have mid size highrise like in Awada and Fegge.

I will still suggest that the government acquire the entire shoreline from Headbridge to Atani for huge industrial cluster/high rise office apartments like they are already with Sabmiller, Krisoral group, Orange drugs etc coming to the area.

Not totally correct.

Many traders use "Ali Baba" and "VConnect" to get the best quotes (Ali Baba is a Chinese ecommerce site). There is heavy Internet usage among younger traders (especially those involved in import/export trade). You should spend some time talking with them.

You cannot just go to a trader telling them "you want to design a website", you've got to demonstrate what value that website adds. I was bidding for a job with Alaba traders, the website was to be a clearing house for their goods - & they saw the benefit.

Since I didn't have a brand name, I was to be paid a percentage of sales and that is logical; ecommerce is a risky channel - and in any case, Alaba traders sell their goods via Konga!!

So they aren't as ignorant as you think.

True, but the two are connected.

Both groups are increasingly using the Internet and email to connect with their Chinese & Taiwanese suppliers.

You cannot say outright that they don't see the benefits of online presence, but if you understand their business model, you'll understand where they are coming from. It is not priority.

What percentage of business transactions in Nigeria are online? Less than 1% of 1%.

Why should a trader struggling with sales and margins commit to setting up a website - when maintenance costs will be quite significant.

In addition to being an IT person, I'm also a business consultant. You have to present the business case before you start suggesting solutions. Consider Shoprite, in spite of their sophistication, they are not focusing on ecommerce right now. They have to get the basics right & be sure their market can adapt to that change before they roll out such solutions.

I lived in UK, Tesco has an ecommerce channel in addition to its massive stores, but it takes a process to get to that point.

Who does the Onitsha trader make most of his sales from? From people who won't be found near a computer.

Finally, designing websites is relatively easy (MS Frontpage or Macromedia Dreamweaver), the problem is the infrastructure to deliver a functioning website.

He was giving his own real life interaction with somebody in Alaba. Traders at Electromart Onitsha and Alaba are the same people. Any business man that has an outlet in Alaba has at least another one in Electromart. Because most of them at Electromart and Alaba are all importer, they relate in all aspects of their business and exchange ideas.

Website design is easy. I've done it before. What is difficult is designing a website with functionality (e.g. ecommerce) and regularly updating a designed website.

In agreement with Buddamonk's remark above, Anambra deserves more University(s) to at least absorb the growing population of its people seeking admission yearly. It is a need
We have many proposed private Uni s especially coming from Churches, but how many of these private owners have the financial muscle to bankroll such operations. It is either the State Government finds a way of part owning some of the struggling institutions or pruning them to colleges with affiliations to reputable uni s.
We were told a donation of N5b was given to ANSU Uli by the previous administration , the impact that money would have made there was overridden by the rumours that a large portion of that money never reached the institution. And that was more like it, paper donations
A case for more money pumped towards the expansion of the facilities and structures in ANSU with a view to increasing the number of fully accredited programmes and increasing the admission quota for the good of our teeming jambites.
The State can also own colleges tailored to the needs and future plans e.g A college of Petroleum Studies with Aguleri oil exploitation in view, A college of (Mechanical)Engineering studies with Nnewi automobiles in view, A college of Arts and Crafts with the projected growths in our tourism sector .
All these can be located near the Igbariam College. We have a very long stretch of table land in that axis of Awka North upto our boundary with parts of Nsukka. I mean table land
I think the past administrations deserves some commendations for the improvements at the college of Agriculture, the achievements from that school is tangible

Yes, we need more universities - and we need a better model to fund them. The money is there, but what is lacking is people with the right ideas in the right places.

Calm down. No profession is that easy. Please show some respect to Happyjoe, his contributions here are cutting-edge. We need more of such materials here. Many thanks to great minds here like Innovator90, Orem122, Chimaadeoye, Odenigbo etc. If not for anything let us respect these five great minds amongst us here.

I worked in a web solutions development company. I developed ecommerce websites using tools like MYSQL and PHP. I also have experience using PeopleSoft, Java, Oracle and SAP.

I don't want to get into a shouting match with you, there's no point.

So from henceforth, I will ignore you.
