busuyem:I thought you opened a thread, what happened? You got no answer? We may not be related by blood as a family (thread), but loyal as a family. No one to the best of my knowledge on this thread would wrongly advice you. We have Manie and Xtfield, they have years of experience in this field both public and private and of course Prof. Gday, LaurelP and visiting Prof who are really up and coming educationist. You did not give the content of the message sent to you, however, take a look at the last WAEC, GCE and NECO pass questions in your preferred subject, am guessing you are experienced that the reason you are been shortlisted, be that as it may, A standard lesson would suffice in such test and a little education questions. Am guessing accommodation would be given. |

Givemejoy:it not that I have refused to revive it. It went with the "tsunami" attack on Nairaland. However, with few market research, most parents are putting a pause to it as result of economic conditions and during these periods, based on research, very few parents would want to hire a lessons tutor, schools fees would be the most significant priority. Note: It is based on my research. It could be different. |

corkqueen:what is difficult to believe? Most posters or members of this thread except for a few are handling at least two subject in their various schools. I was taking Business studies, Account and Commerce. Now, imagine a school that has arms, plus lesson note, marking, setting questions. oh! I forgot to mention school lesson 2-4pm and you are given Economics because the teacher resigned. Have you forgotten the time Prof. Gday was not on the thread for quite some time and some asked after him? Did you remember his response? 2 Likes 1 Share |

ProfGday: Where do I start from? Let me pick the resume. To the best of my knowledge, there is no standard resume for the teaching profession(I stand to be corrected) in Nigeria. In this profession, age is not a MAJOR factor for disqualification especially if you are capable, able, competent and know your onions(subject you intend teaching), yes, I have seen a man in his early 60 actively engaged in this profession. Most schools that advertise do not put many restrictions but they usually include job experience as a major factor. In all thy doing or profession you choose get experience. I have opportunity to look at a few persons resume and find things in the skill segment of their resume such as; Attention to detail and yet they have few mistakes such as full stop, spelling errors and a few other grammatical blunders, you only shoot your self in the foot and come off as someone that is not meticulous. If you are not detailed with your own resume, how do you intend impressing on young minds? Furthermore, Muyiwa afolabi said, "he would only employ someone that has the skills he needs" . I once taught in a a school where the typist resigned few weeks to the terms examination, one of the teachers took it upon himself to get the job done, he said, the undertaking of the job made him understood and found a few things he would ordinarily not know on the computer. The next job he got was as a result of what he displayed when he was tested on the computer. My point, information technology has come to stay and admonish "us" to familiarise ourself with it. I use the same computer to prepare my questions and keep students examination records. It makes my work quick and efficient (the school still use pen and paper). Some schools (Note: some schools that run only Nigeria curriculum) have intranet and as such lesson plan, questions and marking guide are done with the PC and submitted to the examination committee for scrutiny even without meeting them in person. Ever wonder why some schools make it mandatory for applicants to be ICT compliance? Finally, let me invite every person to please come and contribute. Happy new year!!!!!!!!!! |

Okay let me talk a bit about the appearance of a Teacher's resume. There's not much difference between a teacher's resume and the normal resume we all know. The layout or structure is the same with d normal resume. However, there's a slight change of language and content when writing a teaching resume. I don't encourage people to apply for different jobs with d same resume, it will hardly get you interviews. If you're interested in going into teaching, my advice is dat you create a purely teaching resume or CV which will contain teaching terms because every profession has terms associated with it. There are no hard and fast rules about it, but a teaching resume in my opinion shud contain: 1. Your goals and objectives or your personal profile if you have some experience in teaching. This shud align with the educational field, dat is what u want to achieve as a teacher or what you've done already if you're experienced. 2. Your Educational Qualifications 3. Your professional qualifications and training especially the ones related to teaching and education. 4. Your Experience: this is very important because most schools are after the years of experience the person have gathered as a teacher. Pls note dat it must not be only classroom experience, it can include your experience in tutorials, home lesson or even church teaching in childrens department, or your NYSC teaching experience, Yes nah! Your duties shud also be highlighted, that is those activities you carried out as a teacher, eg WAEC preparation, note preparation, exam setting and marking, classroom mgt etc. Use bullet points to highlight them. Just sell yourself. 5. Add the subjects you can teach: yes this is important. If you can take physics, chemistry and biology, pls let dem know by adding it on a section of d resume. 6. Also create a Cover letter to accompany your resume. Personally I hardly apply for any job without a cover letter. It gives u an edge over those dat only sent their resume. Above all just be creative and distinctive with your resume and application and by God's grace, interview invitations will start pouring in. Peace 4 Likes |

To add to what my ogas at the top has said about CVs, a good teacher's cv must also be up-to-date,it shows that you didn't allow your brain to go to sleep at any point in time. It must also be brief but elaborate.i.e am not saying your cv should be up to 5pages and more,it should be kept short but also explanatory so that your employer would grab all is needed to know at a single glance. Also, please and please, do not in any way use coloured paper for your cv,I have seen it before and its so annoying, what are you trying to tell your employer? Like Givemejoy will say,"my 2k". 3 Likes |

Now let me say one or two things about Interviews The interview and test processes for teaching jobs is a bit different from normal office job interviews. In teaching interviews, more emphasis is placed on your ability to do the job, that is to know whether you can actually teach. So the questions are likely going to focus on the processes of teaching. Different schools have different methods of conducting their tests and interviews and also different kinds of questions. But most of them will test ur Maths skills, ur subject knowledge skills, English Language and Reasoning ability. So a person going for an interview in a school shud try and know basic Maths questions like Mean, median and mode, word problems, simple interest etc. Also try and know how to write Essays (very important) and how to answer comprehension questions. Another very important thing which I expect every teacher or prospective teacher to know very well is how to prepare a Lesson Plan. About 70% of d tests I've sat for contained this question-preparing lesson plan. Lesson plan is actually very simple to prepare if you take a look @ it, and its also very important to a teacher. Infact it is to a teacher what the Bible is to a Pastor! Next very essential thing is how to do Micro-teaching. Actually, most schools don't have time for tests and long interviews, they will just ask you to do a 10 minutes micro-teaching and from there they decide whether to hire u or not. So its important to polish your teaching skills. Have at least 2 or 3 topics you can teach very well in your chosen subject and learn it very well. #To be continued# 4 Likes |
