So you actually think that the imposition of this levy has anything to do with encouraging the domestic auto industry? Let me ask you a question don't you find it coincidental that its being introduced when the govt is haemorrhaging oil revenue? 1 Like |

Re: FG Postpones 35% Levy On Used Cars Till April 30 by sonnie10: 8:03pm On Jan 01, 2015 |
Lets see what would be different in four months (Jan - April) in terms of setting up plants and production by these intending auto manufacturing companies. I doubt if anything meaningful progress which would be bases for making informed decision on additional levy can be achieved within this time frame. |

Interesting article on the levy, apparently the levy is 70% not 35%: [b]Import Duty on Tokunbo Cars To Increase to 70% April 30th 2015 (Updated) |

cap28: Implementation has been in phases, the first implementation of the 35% was done when price of oil was still oner 100$ per barrel. ... please note I am against the increase as well oh till right measures are put in place for the success of the policy and plan..... but I am just Fhemmmy and omly with my opinion that dont count YET |
Re: FG Postpones 35% Levy On Used Cars Till April 30 by cap28: 8:22pm On Jan 01, 2015 |
Fhemmmy: You are giving the benefit of the doubt to a govt that has done nothing but fail you for decades , they don't give a damn about domestic trade, they have no vision, no viable economic policies because they are only interested in looting. They will not be affected b y the levy as they don't buy second hand cars, only the masses will be affected. This is a slap in the face of the Nigerian masses by a brutal and cruel gang of looters who are only concerned about perpetuating themselves in power. 3 Likes |

sonnie10: Nothing will be different, cos even common sense shows it will take longer than that to : Set up the plant fix all equipment test the equipment set up the crash testing set up reliable power source for the plant make some and test the rides. But my concern is, in a nation like Nigeria that is built in cash, have they put all check and balance to avoid default when people starting taking loans to buy the rides? Will the loan rate be low enuf for the buyer to actually enjoy the facility or still ave to borrow at those ridiculous rates. The policy could work and be a good thing at the end of the day but they need to take their time to plan it well and not rush it except they have some other hidden agenda. |

cap28: Inasmuch as I do agree with you, I am yet to read or heard opposition parties use this to campaign that they wont do it either and that made me see it as a consensus for all the ogas at the top |
Re: FG Postpones 35% Levy On Used Cars Till April 30 by cap28: 8:34pm On Jan 01, 2015 |
Fhemmmy: There is no viable opposition party in NIgeria, APC and PDP are two sides of the same coin, in other words there are currently no electable parties in NIgeria vying for election, therefore NIgerians are caught between the devil and the deep blue sea. If APC get into office they will simply continue the mass looting of whatever will be left of the treasury. Nigerians need to unite at grass roots level and get rid of the elite who are intent on reducing Nigeria to ashes. |

cap28: That is why I wish there are better option, but for sure GEJ really disappointed mecos: 1. He is the most educated leader we ever had. 2. He had an humble beginning and thought he would fight for the masses. Anyhow, I pray the best candidate win 1 Like |
Re: FG Postpones 35% Levy On Used Cars Till April 30 by cap28: 8:48pm On Jan 01, 2015 |
Fhemmmy: Education is not just about acquiring certificates. Education is about having a vision and long term goal and plan for your nation. GEJ fails on both counts. In my opinion GEJ is nothing more than a puppet of western imperialists who made it possible for him to win the last rigged elections, this time around I think they will throw him to the wolves as he is now becoming a liability to them. We are yet to produce a leader who is prepared to fight for the masses. This is why a grass roots revolution is now necessary , we need someone like Castro of Cuba, however I am very sceptical of such a leader emerging given the level of ignorance, tribalism and illiteracy that continues to exist in the country. 1 Like |

Fhemmmy: I believe that we will eventually get to a point where we will say enough is enough and that day is at hand. Our economy is now in freefall due to the ongoing fall in the price of crude oil, maybe we will be forced to awake from our slumber and put a stop to the years of abuse and exploitation that we have been suffering at the hands of these bandits. |

cap28: I wish our people really see it that way, whatever made them to not make noise or frown at last budget despite the freefall of economy, I see no light yet at the of the tunnel. By the way, is it the youth that would deliver Nigeria? We arw just as corrupt if not worse, cos everyone wanna drive big without working for it I am not sure if we are there yet jare |

Leadership ain't easy, especially wen difficult choices r involved. I don't see how and why any normal human will applaud the Federal government for "listening to the people"? A government with purpose and a proper agenda for it's citizens will go ahead with the plan if it's reasons are genuine not waiting to get votes then purnish the same voters after winning elections with harsh economic policies. How many Innoson vehicles do we have in the President's fleet? Does any member of the FEC, Senate or House of Reps use the said Innoson? How come the partner banks are coming in from South Africa? Are there no banks in Nigeria with capacity to partner with in the automotive loan scheme? How does this encourage our economy? When pump price of PMS was increased, we were told the refineries will be fixed within six months of that same year and the 'contract had been signed'... Two years down the line, we still import petroleum products. I reside in Eleme, Rivers state where we have the two refineries sited yet bought PMS last week at #100/litre. As if that was not enough, I drove in to buy again on the 22nd and the same station sold me PMS at #105/litre and when I asked why, the pump attendants said that was what they were asked to sell and it was clearly showing on the pump screen. Do I take this government and her policies seriously? I don't think so. What we need is a change sadly, I don't see a better choose out there. That's why I chose to remain apolitical. Back to the topic... We have a long way to go as a nation. |

mexxy1:Bro, get ur facts straight b4 u post, new foreign vehicle will still b imported, many more will b coupled within d country, he just wants 2 dicourage use of rickety used cars...nobody is forcing anybody 2 use innoson or d likes. 10q |
Re: FG Postpones 35% Levy On Used Cars Till April 30 by mexxy1(m): 10:53am On Jan 02, 2015 |
okabe:Read my post again. I said if the intent is right, then there should be exemplary leadership. How many of the populace can afford brand new cars? And, nowhere did they state that rickety used cars will not be allowed into the country. Try bringing a jalopy twenty year old accidented vehicle and pay the 70% valuation then see if it will not be allowed in. It's a blanket policy on all fully built units used or new, they never said it was to discourage the importation of rickety vehicles as if that was the case, the simple thing would have been to reduce the age limit of vehicles allowed into the country. I don't need a degree in Economics to know that. Nobody is forcing anybody to buy a particular brand... yes. But, what safety testing are the ones coupled within the country passing through and where are the testing facilities? Are you aware that most of the Kia vehicles in Nigeria (brand new) came without air bags whereas the American specs of same vehicles over there in the US had? I don't know if that is still the case now though but, my stance remains that, if you want people you lead to follow a particular trend then you must live with that same trend. A situation arose a few years back here in Rivers state where members of the board of the state internal revenue service were being screened by the House of Assembly, and when they were asked for their tax clearance certificates none of them had paid their taxes but these are the same people asking us the citizens to pay our tax. Leadership should be by example... Thank you. |
