Nice thread. @pavored,you are doing a great job. Marketing is the most important thing in agriculture.if you dont get your market right, then loss is knocking on the door. Mile 12 is not the only market that we have in the country as mercilicious, henrimoto, has mentioned. There is also a plantain market at Mile 2 but sellers prefer the Mile12 market as its located at the entrance of lagos to reduce their transportation cost. There are 3 types of farmers the small scale (1-5acres),medium scale(6-10) and large scale.(above 10) Each categories have different markets and solve different food needs. A small scale farmer in ibadan cannot say he is transporting his plantain to mile12 in lagos to sell,he has to find close by market for his produce. Only medium to large scale farmers will be able to do that. The problems i see with most plantain farmers is that they don't think about market before going into production,no proper analysis of cost of transportation to markets, where are the markets close or far from my farm,do i have the contacts of potential buyers etc. They think that because of our large population, they will find market for their produce when the time comes. There is always market for your produce if you do the right thing before production. Another question to ask is how do you make a good profit selling in the market. I am telling you from experience, not everyone that have market for their produce makes profit. If you want to make profit, you must know how the market operates. For a large farm, either you export or sell to processing companies that will buy at a very good price. Also for a large scale farmer selling to a market, you will need to have your own network of trusted buyers to dispose off your produce. (i will expansiate further on this later on). For small scale farmers, approach dozens of buyers and find the right ones that are willing to buy at a good price. Shoprite can never buy Nigeria produce, the reason does not boils down to quality issues but to other factors which i will explain to you. Remember shoprite is a southafrican company and if you do your research well on southafrica agriculture industry, they are 100% better off than us in terms of quantities of food produced by southafrica farmers. They are looking for ways to sell their produce as their food production is more than the population. 95% of the produce being sold are imported from south africa, from cucumber to watermelon to gabbage to just name it and they know our population can sustain it. They need to provide more employment to their populace at the expense of Nigerians. Watch out for my new post on marketing. 2 Likes |

It will take between 400 to 500 bunches to fill that truck if the fingers are of average sizes. The best way to make most of the plantain is to process with that no waste , even the over rope produce are also process into snacks , we can do alot with the produce. What can we do with the dried plantain leaves ? In Edo, Delta & Ondo state i see alot of the dried leaves stack in bunches along the road but l dont nnow what to do with them but i think there is no waste in plantain plant , an doing a research on it presently . For land good for plantain farm & hybrid double bunch suckers please contact Gbenga on 08136650972 or WhatApp:08182355047 |

Well said, jethro. Standardization of a pool of farms is critical to ensuring steady supply of high quality plantain or any other produce for that matter. jethro2: |

christian11:They sell plantain in dozens and a dozen contains 12 bunches. They load the 9/11 in coaches and a coach contains about 24 dozens anf the 9/11 can take up to four coaches. So do your maths you will get the quantity the truck can take. |
