The agreement was that we would provide the trainers and the Nigerian Army would provide the equipment we need to properly conduct the training and that was agreed well ahead of time as part of our partnership.

Is the programme to train us on the equipments we already have or give us better equipments and train us on how to use it?

Thank you for common sense.

We love to blame others and never take ownership.

No wonder it is so easy for the corrupt ineffective leaders we have to lead gullible Nigeria since all they have to do is give Nigerians someone to blame e.g US, APC, Cameron.

Why do Nigerians think the US owes them anything? We beg for everything and then act like we are entitled.

Mcbussy:

Yes,true, but do u think in a standard military, there shouldn't be enuf equipment?...that u'll have to deploy everything and not have some permanently reserved for training purposes. Even if they had deployed everything to d front, don't u think d wise thing to do is to buy new ones to train your troops with?

If every AK47 was deployed to the NE, what would they use to train the fresh cadets?...see?...that's dsame reason why there is need to have reserved a reasonable number of every necessary military hardware for training purposes.

And what benefit do you bring to the US aside always begging for aid, zmapp, military support etc? Your oil which is the only thinkg Nigeria has was never a major supplier to the US so what do you bring to the table?

Real friends are those that stand with you in times of difficulty. US have not stood with Nigeria in our time of need.

Israel murders the Palestinians daily yet the US give them free weapons in form of military aid, they don't bring the human rights bla bla bla into it. Nigeria is not even asking for military aid, we are ready to pay for the weapons yet the US opposes the sales of weapons to Nigeria.

The US has never been a good friend of Nigeria, they are simply looking for what to fleece from us and at the same time trying to dictate how and when we deal with the terrorists within our midst.

You do know training military is not all about just shooting weapons. It is more about military tactics, leadership and strategy irrespective of the weapons.

1,They are benefiting from an oil boom...so they should have spent more.

2.They are not promoting Nigeria getting off oil.

But for me....the reason why the Army ain't beating boko is simple....they are fighting boko like it is a regular war. The same mistake the soviets made against Afghanistan. War is as much as about tactics than about equipment.

Well......let's just hope that it gets better this time around

Sabotage on the part of the military is also killing their efforts.

Nigerians and collective amnesia or should I call it the attention deficit of toddlers. Thank goodness you lot won't lead this country like the 'clueless' ones we are quick to criticise.

Abeg I was already on Nairaland (just a while ago) that Nigerians were frothing at the mouth about the 'huge' defence budget and agreed with the UN that defence budget be reduced to a smaller percentage of GDP in favour of education, health and others in order to attain the millenium goals. Was it not this same madam Ngozi Iweala working for OBJ who started the dis-investment and proudly showed us the figures every budget year.

Is it a wild coincidence then that Boko took one look at the fattened old professors 'chopping' fattened education budgets and declared with one voice, 'down with books' now give our sector back the cash. The sword must resume its might against the pen.

Hahaha. I laugh in naija.. Abeg who is going to square this circle and deliver my people from this conundrum. Now it is the spiteful civilians even willing to donate their 'widows mite' to their former tormentors to save them.

So security is now as important as education and without education you breed Boko.

Sorry,but I couldn't decipher your point.
Can you make it simple and straight?
Thanks.

I have read some posts on the topic and I am frankly astounded by the naivety and gullibilty of some Nigerians. I do not see anything wrong with the opinions or views of the US Ambassador. Most of us know the issues plaguing our country but refuse to accept the harsh realities : our brothers and sisters are being slaughtered in the North by BH, a large number of refugees have been taken in by communities or villages including families without any iota of aid or assistance from the goverment of the day who are focused on the next election. Currently, some areas in the North have been seceded to BH's caliphates. Our NA are poorly equipped and inadequately trained to deal with the threat. There have been numerous human right abuses by our forces - not just the army and these abuses go beyond the frontline. We have numerous instances of civilains being assaulted and property damaged or destroyed. What is the problem with recognizing that there have been extrajudical killings and finding ways to tackle the issue? What is wrong with training or providing the necessary tools to assist our troops who are fighting a war they did not cause? As far as I am aware constant training and deployment will keep us sharp on the evolving terrorist threat and update our intelligence capabilities. It is a competitive world out there, the colonial blame everyone else but ourselves mentality will get us nowhere. We have to knuckle down and assertively deal with our problems. We need action and I am tired of all the talk. I am not going to be dragged into all the conspiracy theories. Wars are expensive and the US realize it is business and we as the customers have to work as partners or form alliances with other countries. That is diplomacy. What's the use of having Nigerian envoys in other countries if they cannot sustain or maintain the interests of Nigerians? There is saying it is good to have " fresh eyes" a third party can always give you constructive criticism in order to develop insight into your strengths or weakness when tackling any issue or truly assessing performance. Why can't we accept constructive criticisms as Nigerians without resolting into a psycho babble of ethnic or religious or political hoghwash?

an excerpt from the above post

However, in an interview with select journalists at
his residence in Lagos yesterday, the US
Ambassador to Nigeria, James Entwistle, disclosed
that there was an agreement between Nigeria and
America on the provision of equipment and trainers
for the Nigerian military, which Nigeria failed to
honour.
He said: “We had, at Nigeria’s request, agreed to
train some battalion, in my opinion, some of the
best trainers in the world have been provided by the
United States. The agreement was that we would
provide the trainers and the Nigerian Army would
provide the equipment we need to properly conduct
the training and that was agreed well ahead of time
as part of our partnership.

dis is the same problem facing d military concerning boko haram, there is nt enough and good weapon to fight the war.
They can't Ve money for equipment because the resource if for GEJ to fly jet everyday, add to fleet of jet, Use For campaign.

Jonathan don't care about us,all he know is money flowing into him and his cronies account.

It's called equipment or pieces of equipment!! No plural!! Back to the point, why is it hard for Naija govt to honour simple agreement? Naija agreed to provide equipment for training while the US agreed to provide training. I can guarantee that the US has this in writing. Naija govt always wants to renege on agreement.
No other country other than the US has collaborated more with Naija in intelligence and military support.

Listen to what you are saying. So ALL of Nigeria's weapons are being used to fight boko haram? Does this mean if another country invades Nigeria from the South we are finished?

The fact is the military is so poorly equipped that they do not even have equipment for training of future forces. this is a serious situation because the future of the military is at stake even after we defeat boko haram given we have no equipment to train and develop our military further.

Face up to your deficiencies and stop blaming the US.

Hey US apologist, read what i wrote, wasn't blaming anyone-they both had their reasons. Now run along

USA government and their hypocrisy....they appear as if they wish us well and support us but in their closet, all they want to materialise is their predictions, their interest. Read : http://tarnews.co.za/frontpage/boko-haram-is-a-cia-covert-operation-wikileaks/ Let us understand, the main allies that USA have are canada,Uk,australia, and new zealand, the others are just being used as means of expandingg their territorial influence. The reason is to prevent Russia and China from having any reasonable say or influence on any country! They, the USA want to be the only superpower, that's why they want to destabilize any country they forsee as being a threat to their interest....countries that don't do their bidding.
Gone are the days when I used to see USA government as always good while others are always bad. Pls nobody should mis understand me o,ii lav some of their citizens n I lav their high tech and knowledge but the cabal that always impose their will on the US government and military are those I don't like.........Just look at the way they exonerated themselves n pretended not to know the main reason why our government cancelled the so called training of our army. I like their double faced attitude....lol.....imagine when someone says," I'm with u!", and in actual sense the person is not with u..............lol,this is so funny!! I v never seen a hypocritical gov than the US government.

Mr man, Nigeria did not ask for aid, we asked for trade. We said sell military equipment to us so we can fight those that are disturbing us.

You ask what we bring to the table, we bring dollars required for the purchase. That is all the world trade organisation requires us to bring in order to buy goods and services.

And what does Egypt and Israel give to the US before they became recipient of US aid year in year out?
Or what did ISIS give to the US before they were built with us support?

what i don't understand are
1-did they (US) only want to train us(Nigerian) on how to use our own weapon or to know the weapon we have got and their number?
2-what did they do since they saw Nigeria don't have enough weapon for the training? did they sell to Nigeria the weapon? why give a ship instead of offering the training equipment?
US should jst leave Nigeria alone to fare for herself if they cant help

US should go and sitdown!

Your government should go and sit down. The US has given Nigerian Navy the biggest ships in Africa. They train your military and have been doing so for years. They have donated MRAPs and so on but they won't give lethal weapons to a government of idiots who may lose them to terrorists or train the guns on civilians or worse still size the opportunity to start chopping the defence budget. Your country is governed by inferior nonetities who can't even control their army. Get serious about life and how you manage your people then maybe the world will treat you different.
