PAGAN9JA:
We dont need this fake oyinbo way of expressing love

fake smiles. Fake words.

We Africans express our love through respect and our actions.

Hmmm...

You may just be right. Afterall, I never got the "I love you" from my folks but know, feel and see their love for me.

I feel you...

Sounds quite odd.

I know I will laugh so hard and step back a bit if my mum would call and say that to me.

By God's grace, my home will be different.
Actually I think if either of my said it now, I'd smile and give 'em a hug.

We're a lot more conversant with expressing our feelings via our actions, than saying the words. But I feel it's important children are told often enough. It's so easy to think your parents are being mean and wicked when they make tough calls which you consider unfair. But when they explain their actions were motivated by love, it's easier to accept.

Nigeria has a huge problem with talking about feelings.

My dad never said it...the only way I knew was anytime I'm leaving the house, his eyes look teary. My mum have said it twice though, but I felt awkward, hung up and felt a funny way in my stomach. Even thinking of it feels somehow. But I love my family to death and i would go the extra mile for them but expressing it using the ILY is hard. It's funny how it's easy to tell your bae the L word but not your family. It's just the upbringing. My kids would hear it every day ehn. I think it's just beautiful. If you feel it,just say it.

Lol, I can't even remember the last time I said, "I love you" to anyone.

And in my family, we spread love the "Brooklyn way" by showing it, not via mere words.

It's not about talking the talk, it's about walking the walk.

Really, it wasn't a common thing in my family while growing up, but already decided to make it a way of living in my own family and also display it.

I am sure if I call my parents this minute and just say: "I love you folks", they would be very worried and probably call on their parish priest to say a prayer for me because I may just be going nuts.

I was shocked to the realization that since I was born I have never for once thought of saying the "L" word to my folks and siblings, let alone putting the thought to words. This is not saying that I do not love them nor does it imply that they do not see that I do.

Far from it, I do love them and they see it in my actions but the challenge comes when I am asked to voice it to them. I believe firmly that saying "I love you" to them is the right thing to do but it is just so difficult.

I am quite sure that the difficulty has a lot to do with the way I and my siblings were brought up. We never got around saying "I love you" to each other. The closest we got to using the "L" word in the family was when we pray and recite the "Jesus I love you..." prayer etc.

As a grown man, I find it strange that an individual would bring up his family devoid of a phrase so simple. It matters not if they show each other love....I believe that phrase should be used in the family multiple times daily as it helps with the bonding process.

A typical African man would never tell u "I love u" not that he doesn't love u but he believes it to b part of discipline. but thanks to civilization. But wait o. do u know that an African man has a way of telling someone I love u back in the 90's

Everyday to my wife before I leave and when we go to bed, dont know if it will be the last words I get to say to her. Been married to that angel for 24 years and love her to bits, truly a blessing from the heavens.

I call my mom every Friday cus she lives in the US and I live in europe so we have calls every Friday around 6pm and talk for like 2-4 hours and at the end I tell her I love her and she says the same.

To me kids (23 son, 17 daughter, 16 son) anytime I feel like it but try to say it once a day.

To my brothers, we are 5 and Im the oldest, the youngest is 34. When we speak or text tell them luv you bro dont forget that.

Dont be afraid to say it, true story.....

A man was travelling with his son via train. The train passes a burial place and the young boy asked his dad why all the flowers at the graves. The father replied to show they love and miss them, the boy answered but they are dead why not do it when they are alive. Dad give me my flowers now and I will do the same not when we are gone. My son said this to me when he was 5 years old and we were travelling through France. I never forgot it..................so NEVER be ashamed to tell the ones you love that you do to bits, it may be the last time you get to say it and the last time they get to hear it.

Peace out!

I see it in the movies where family members say ''i love you'' to each other, and i must confess, it always
Touches my heart. Well, no one says ''i love you'' in my house, but you know we do love ourselves wen

Action needs it. How many times did my sis pay my school fees with her little alowee from NYSC then.
But, wen me have my family, i will not only instill love in action, but also in warm words.
