Christainity Is The Largest Religion In Nigeria- 2014 Statistics by paulGrundy(m): 8:57am On Jan 11, 2015
Nigeria is a society with Christianity, Islam and Traditional African religion being professed. According to recent estimates Christianity is practiced by 50.5% of the population. (19.9% Protestantism, 12.3% Churches of Christ, 10.1% Anglicanism and 8.2% Catholicism). Islam is the second greatest religion by 43.5% consisting of 95% Sunni Islam and 5% Shia Islam. 6% of the Nigerian people practices Traditional African religion.[1][2]

From the 1990s to the 2000s, there was significant growth in Protestant churches, including the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Winners' Chapel, Christ Apostolic Church (the first Aladura Movement in Nigeria), Deeper Christian Life Ministry, Evangelical Church of West Africa, Mountain of Fire and Miracles, Christ Embassy, The Synagogue Church Of All Nations, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Aladura Church (indigenous Christian churches being especially strong in the Yoruba and Igbo areas), and of evangelical churches in general. These churches have spilled over into adjacent and southern areas of the middle belt. Denominations like the Seventh-day Adventist and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have also flourished.[3][4]

Other leading Protestant churches in the country are the Church of Nigeria of the Anglican Communion, the Assemblies of God Church, the Nigerian Baptist Convention and The Synagogue, Church Of All Nations. The Yoruba area contains a large Anglican population, while Igboland is predominantly Catholic and the Edo area is predominantly Assemblies of God, which was introduced into Nigeria by Augustus Ehurie Wogu and his associates at Old

Islam dominated the north and had a number of supporters in the South Western, Yoruba part of the country. Nigeria has the largest Muslim population in sub-Saharan Africa. In terms of Nigeria's major ethnic groups' religious affiliations, the Hausa ethnic group in the North is 95% Muslims and 5% Christians, the West which is the Yoruba tribe is 35% Christians and 55% Muslim with 10% going to adherents of other African religions, while the Igbos of the East and the Ijaw in the South are 98% Christians (Catholics) and 2% practitioners of traditional religions.[5] The middle belt of Nigeria contains the largest number of minority ethnic groups in Nigeria and they are mostly Christians and members of traditional religions with few Muslim converts.[6][7]

The vast majority of Muslims in Nigeria are Sunni, belonging to Maliki school of jurisprudence; however, a sizeable minority also belongs to Shafi madhhab. A large number of Sunni Muslims are members of Sufi brotherhoods. Most Sufis follow the Qadiriyya, Tijaniyyah and/or Mouride movement. A significant Shia minority exists (see Shia in Nigeria). Some northern states have incorporated Sharia law into their previously secular legal systems, which has brought about some controversy.[8] Kano State has sought to incorporate Sharia law into its constitution.[9] The majority of Quranists follow the Kalo Kato or Quraniyyun movement. There are also Ahmadiyya and Mahdiyya minorities.[10]

According to a 2001 report[11] from The World Factbook by CIA, about 50% of Nigeria's population is Muslim, 40% are Christians and 10% adhere to local religions.[12] But in some recent report, the Christian population is now sightly larger than the Muslim population. An 18 December 2012 report on religion and public life by the Pew Research Center stated that in 2010, 49.3 percent of Nigeria's population was Christian, 48.8 percent was Muslim, and 1.9 percent were followers of indigenous and other religions, or unaffiliated.[13] Additionally, the 2010s census of Association of Religion Data Archives has reported that 46.5 percent of the total population is Christian, slightly bigger than the Muslim population of 45.5 percent, and that 7.7 percent are members of other religious groups.[14]

Out of the 50.5% of Christians... Atheists,Deists,Agnostics and other rational thinkers constitutes about 15-20% ....With the alarming increase in the number of rational thinkers on Nairaland only,we would be looking at a percentage of 25-30% in few years to come and more.

@o.p, soon you will claimed that the estimate you got was influenced by the spirit of God.
Nigeria has the highest percentage of atheist and agnostic in africa, so why was it not included?

Case study

Is she typing from the church?

If she's... then she's not listening to sermons or participating in church activities which makes her a 'secular' Christian.

If she's not...then she might probably be an atheist or a deist who doesn't believe in Christian doctrines smiley

The population is not evenly distributed. Funny thing is the you showed the statistics of catholic worldwide population, NOT nigerian catholic population. Am not disputing the fact that the catholic church is the largest christian group in the world.

Well this is the number of Catholic world over.
But having read all the facts I can find on wikipeadia and beyond, am yet to see any that prove Anglicans are larger than Catholics in Nigeria.

As much as I believe the research isn't trying to be sentimental, it isn't true that Anglicans are larger than Catholics in Nigeria.
From wiki we have 18m Anglican in Nigeria and 18-19m Catholics in Nigeria according to whatever statistic taken some years back.
According to one of the interview recently, a Catholic bishop in Nigeria said there are approximately 30m Catholics in Nigeria. This though am yet to verify and I don't think this is actually the purpose of this thread.

I will like to read any research stating we have 30m Catholics in Nigeria, I only read it in an interview grant by the Cardinal Onaiyekan if am not mistaken. I know as an archbishop and cardinal he probably will be right but I can't really see any documented proof so far.

So by your twisted logic, as it not occurred to you that muslims are abandoning the religion in far higher numbers and converting to christianity than those you claim are becoming rational thinkers A few years down the line, going by the trend, Nigeria is. Likely to be 80% christian, 10% muslim and 10% traditionalists/"rationalists"

Am not sure you understand the OP correctly it never insinuated that winners or any other pentecostal groups in Nigeria is larger than the catholic church it only hinted on its recent explosive growth. Neither am I saying your 30+ figure is wrong, you are in fact accurate sir!

The bolded above is pure islamic propaganda, islam on the contrary is a religion that is imploding and on the decline. Every year six million muslims leave islam for other faiths(mostly to christianity) but it goes mostly unreported due to the evil apotasy laws.
