endy247: I didn't buy the whole drinker, what I bought was the nipple, on Amazon you can get it for say, 15 pieces for $5 or $7.95. The idea is that I will finish it up buy my self at my farm. It will save me and my workers a lot of wahala, they won't have to individually manually change the water and the liters will stay dry for a long time. All those Nigeria online stores might have them ooo, check. 1 Like 1 Share |

Farmers in the house pls advice. I currently have 1000 pullets. 75% @ 17wks while the remaining 25% are 10wks old. Can all the birds share 1000 dose of 3in1 vaccine: i.e vaccinate the older birds then keep the remaining vaccine in the fridge for 6wks when the younger pullets will be due. Or should I just vaccinate both the old and the young pullets now? |

Hi everyone, My dad has retired from civil service , and he indicated interested in starting up a poultry farm, he want to grow both layers and boilers, he has experience in the field , he residence in Umuahaia Abia State. My question is, how far can 1 Million naira go in this venture ? i intend giving him 1.5 , but want to give him 1 million now, and the 500k in couple of months, am asking because that's the only amount I can give him for this, as I have my own projects, and might not be there to support him financially as he runs the farm. 1 Like |

aking4ever:it depends on a lot of things, if structure is on ground 1m is enough for him to start, my dad started his with 500k late last yr,250 layers.(backyard) , just do correct findingsx 1m isnt bad to start. Goodluck |

obnelly:grave? U sound like u re sure he wld fail if he goes into poultry. Probably d loan is a "no interest" loan frm his bro,sis or parent..he is taking a risk.. however, I advice op not to risk more dan he can afford to loose. |
Re: Starting A Poultry Farm (a Blog) by Eggcelent(m): 5:43pm On Jan 13, 2015 |
aking4ever. Just as justified19 said above, having the structure is important And by structure, we mean the pen, cages, water containers/drums (if you ain't using cages, then you need lots of cone feeders and bowls for water). Either way, budget 1k for each bird (whether you are buying DOC or POL). If no structures yet, I'll suggest you split the 1m into two; half for the birds, the other half for structures. Success. |
Re: Starting A Poultry Farm (a Blog) by Eggcelent(m): 5:47pm On Jan 13, 2015 |
AkayTopsy. I don't think it will work. What I know is that once you open a bottle of vaccine, then it has to be used ASAP. |
Re: Starting A Poultry Farm (a Blog) by Eggcelent(m): 5:55pm On Jan 13, 2015 |
mozek24. I wouldn't know the terms of the loan you took. However, if it is one with a short moratorium, then going with POL is the better option. And that becomes more important if you don't have much experience in managing a poultry. Having said that, the most important factor here is that YOU MUST GET YOUR PRODUCT/BIRDS FROM A REPUTABLE SOURCE. DON'T DO AGENTS. GO DIRECTLY TO THE HATCHERY OR A CERTIFIED DEPOT. Success. |

SEE WAHALA. We (Myself and my brother) run a layer farm of About 2500birds now. Some time about October - November 2014, there was scarcity of any form of poultry feed in my Uyo, Akwa Ibom state where our farm is located. Our birds were starved so bad that their feeding ration dropped from 13 bags a day to 2bags, some days no bag. We had money but could not source feed. The overall effect we lost more than 1.5million naira on feed money within two months trying to make the birds gain weight and continue production of eggs as they where guzzling feed like no mans business when the feed was eventually available and still not laying eggs. We had to be buying feed as buch as 3,200 naira from 2,250 it used to be before the scarcity. This b#llshit messed up so many of our friends that they had to sell off their layers birds for meet as there was no feed and they birds where dying or not laying egss anymore. They birds have picked up production now and we can breathe some air. They only reason we culd battle this was cos we could source money (I mean a million plus in naira) to feed this guys for two straight months while not sure if they will pickup production. Now this is no farmers mistake but a farmers problem. Lesson: Have a plan B source of feed. We now buy feed in trucks and sell some. if we hear any sign of scarcity we will quickly readjust. Have your plan B my fellow farmers. I have seen friends loose bigtime, and it was no fault of thiers. 4 Likes |

We had to queue for 2hours repeatedly to buy 2bags of feed for a farm that needed 12bags a day at the minimum. and the price of feed went up by 1000naira. It was so bad that our fat birds could now wiggle out of their cages because of weight loss. Some folks could not afford to buy feed at the current rate and had to sell of their layers for meet as they where not even laying again to assist in feeding. In all I felt happy being associated in the whole mess as I made new farmer friends at the queue for feed. I have a good job already, I bring the cash my brother runs the farm and I assists when I am around. We are now making arrangement to start feed distribution so we can have a say in the matter when the axe drops hard again like it did last year. This is our first time in poultry biz, we are hope full cos we wanna make a difference. I got my resolve to start the farm after reading this thread over and over again, thanks guys. 1 Like 1 Share |

mozek24:Poultry business is not gambling it's only when you don't know anything about poultry, then it becomes gambling. Go for practical training on poultry, see things for yourself and participate in them, ask questions. then you know poultry is business and not gambling 1 Like |

Re: Starting A Poultry Farm (a Blog) by Eggcelent(m): 12:43pm On Jan 14, 2015 |
samuel25. The eggs naturally become bigger the longer the birds lay. However, you may wish to give them artificial lighting. It encourages birds to lay bigger & more eggs. You may check http://www.worldpoultry.net/Layers/Housing/2014/12/Different-colour-LED-light-influences-layer-production-1666912W/ for better info. Success 1 Like |
